Abstract

One of the salient features of Maltese syntax is the occurrence of a sequence of inflected verbal predicates. Starting with an in-depth analysis of the relationship between specific pairs of predicates, we aim to account for the range of possible combinations within the sequence. We analyze the semanticsyntactic relation between pairs of verbal predicates, V1 and V2, with V1 being a motion verb. As well as providing an insight into the nature of verbal chains, this analysis serves to explore the theoretical notions of modifier and complement in Maltese.
