Abstract

This paper describes various aspects of linguistic contact in the Western Mediterranean. We begin by comparing two cases of linguistic hybridization involving Romance and Semitic elements: Mediterranean Lingua Franca and Maltese. We then look at contacts of the Occitan-Catalan group on this area and mention some of the influences on the Lingua Franca. Next, we look at the various Romance contributions to Maltese, stressing the important contribution by Sicilian. The most innovative part of this paper is the description of a set of linguistic phenomena, principally concerning vocabulary that we believe ought to be analyzed as potential Occitan-Catalan contributions to Maltese.
