Abstract

As is well known, the corpse of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, who was killed by the Swiss at Nancy, could only be identified with difficulty when the naked, frozen body was found four days later on the field of battle. The Duke was identified by his Italian page, his physician, his half-brother, and the chronicler Olivier de La Marche on the basis of particular signs: missing front teeth, a scar on the neck, extremely long fingernails. It seems that Charles the Bold was unrecognizable because he was naked. After he had been washed with hot water and wine and clothed, other members of his court recognized him as well
