-
Jörg Dünne
Abstract
Chapter 4, Geography/Cartography, deals with the cultural history of geographic and cartographic lines in texts from the 16th to the 21st century, focusing on the operationality of geographic lines from the perspective of a cultural pragmatics. Presenting texts by Bernabé Cobo and Carl Schmitt, the chapter starts with a paradigmatic early modern case where the European idea of America as an open space for expansion is contested by the line practices of the Inca in Peru. The second part of the chapter, presenting texts by Petrus Apianus, Martín Cortés de Albacar, Jacques Cassini, Alexander von Humboldt, and Christian Jacob, concentrates on ‘Western’ line practices in geography and geopolitics, especially on lines in maps and their historical transformations from portolan charts to grid maps and to the use of isolines in so-called ‘thematic’ maps. A third part discusses border issues as a special geopolitical use of lines, presenting texts by Frederick Jackson Turner, Friedrich Ratzel, Lucien Febvre, and Eyal Weizman.
