Abstract
Seductive Cycles and Historical Fantasies. Richard W. Butler’s TourismArea Life Cycle (TALC) Model and the History of Tourism onMallorca. The island of Mallorca in the Balearics is considered to be a prototypical example of early sun and beach tourism. Popular conceptions of the Mallorca’s entrance into the tourist industry correspond precisely to the early phases in Richard Butler’s Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC) model. More recent studies show that these conceptions are historically skewed. This article begins by describing the history of tourism on Mallorca and the perceptions of the island in the 19th and 20th centuries. It then demonstrates how the development of Mallorca deviates from the TALC model. Tourism in Mallorca came not to an isolated and economically underdeveloped region, but rather to a region which was industrially developed and connected to the global flow of commodities. The main Mallorcan protagonists were not as marginalized as the model describes them. It is they who produced the perceptions which were passed on to later travelers. From the very beginning, it was the indigenous Mallorcans who advocated the installation of a tourist industry and then organized it. In this way, Mallorca became the tourist center of Spain already in the 1930s. This laid the groundwork for the boom of the postwar era. To this day, indigenous companies dominate the Mallorcan tourist industry. Since other historical studies also describe deviating entries into the development of tourism, the question arises as to whether the TALC model reproduces stereotypes. The article advocates a more flexible approach to the early phases of the model. In addition, the article notes that Mallorca is perhaps a special case, rather than a prototype for the development of regions for sun and beach tourism.
