On address pronouns in the history of Brazilian Portuguese

  • und

Abstract

In this chapter, we analyze the reorganization process of the pronominal system of Brazilian Portuguese after the rise of você (‘you’) as a singular informal pronoun. We rely on studies based on data extracted from letters written from the 1870s to 1980s in Rio de Janeiro and discuss how the variation of the address forms tu and você in subject position affects other syntactic positions, observing the formation process of new syncretic paradigms in the complement functions, namely accusative (te~lhe~você~o/a), dative (te~lhe~prep+ti~prep+você), oblique (preposition+ti~você), and genitive (teu~seu).
