Résumé

Since the 1970’s, history of linguistics has been called upon to locate the sources of a deceptively familiar notion: the grammatical sentence. In this paper, we first review the main hypotheses regarding the birth act of the notion, we then question the relationship between two moments that seem crucial to the development of sentence in French grammatical culture: Urbain Domergue’s reform of the syntactic analysis, and the new school grammar that is set up at the beginning of the 20th century.
