The Intricacy of Languages
This chapter is in the book The Intricacy of Languages

Abstract

At the start of the 20th century, the theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of dialectology were innovated, among other things, by the principles of linguistic geography whose founder is Jules Gilliéron. This article will discuss some aspects which demonstrate how Jakob Jud assimilated and improved the principles of this new way of studying the linguistic diversity of a determined territory. At the same time, this work intends to analyse some items of importance about the epistolary correspondence between Jud and Joan Coromines, who was his student and one of the most well-known linguists of that century. The study approaches used by the two linguists for questioning the dialect speakers will also be analysed in this article along with the works of Jud and Coromines as an example model. That will allow us a better comprehension of the diversity of the linguistic of roman languages.
