The Annual Meeting of the Scandinavian Association for the Study of Pain (SASP) was held in Reykjavik May 26-27, 2016. SASP was founded in December 1976 in Stockholm and has organized scientific research and educational meetings annually since then, circulating among the five Nordic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. This meeting in Reykjavik celebrated its 40th gathering of pain-researchers and clinicians. This pain researcher-network meeting took place at the headquarters of deCODE Genetics. Speakers at the meeting came from the Scandinavian countries, as well as from the US, Germany, Canada, and the UK. The main topics of the meeting were pain in the joints, risk factors for chronic pain, pain and genetics, and coping with pain.

Nineteen free abstracts from all over Scandinavia, Ghana, and the UK were presented in posters at the meeting. In addition six abstracts of the presentations by the young researchers receiving travel grants are published - see below. As usual, the topics were diverse, representing both basic and clinical research. For those interested in the abstracts, they are published online in the Scandinavian Journal of Pain, the official journal of SASP: http://www.scandinavianjournalpain.com

A one day course for PhD-students was held in conjunction with the meeting, where students presented their own projects and learned about genetic research in pain, the psychology of pain, small fibre testing, epidemiological studies, and the mechanism behind interventional procedures for pain. Hopefully, the PhD course is here to stay as it is important for young Scandinavian pain researchers to meet with each other and discuss their work, fostering the opportunity to collaborate in pain research in the future.

This year, SASP offered travel grants to young researchers for the second time. Six young researchers received the 2016 awards: Emmanuel Bäckryd, Elin Magnusdottir, Oleg Kambur, Ran Magnusdottir, Steffann Wittrup Christensen, and Debbie Jørgensen. Congratulations!
