This review aims to present cellulose as a versatile resource for the production of a variety of materials, other than pulp and paper. These products include fibers, nonwovens, films, composites, and novel derivatized materials. This article will briefly introduce the structure of cellulose and some common cellulose derivatives, as well as the formation of cellulosic materials in the micro- and nanoscale range. The challenge with dissolution of cellulose will be discussed and both derivatizing and nonderivatizing solvents for cellulose will be described. The focus of the article is the critical discussion of different shaping processes to obtain a variety of cellulose products, from commercially available viscose fibers to advanced and functionalized materials still at the research level.

Currently, a substantial amount of research is devoted to gluten bioplastics. A promising processing route towards composites and films uses solutions of reduced gliadin. The addition of sufficient urea allows the preparation of highly concentrated gliadin solutions without an anomalous rheology. This is investigated in this paper by thixotropy experiments on gliadin solutions. These solutions show a balance between structural build-up due to molecular interactions and structural break-down induced by shear flow. Because of this, such protein solutions should be prepared with great caution. To assure a rheology suitable for processing, a shear history and a sufficient amount of added urea to disrupt molecular interactions are crucial.

The effect of nanocrystalline cellulose dispersion on the nonisothermal crystallization of poly(ethylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) (PEF) has been investigated by means of solvent casting. The cellulose dispersion plays a significant role on the crystallization temperature, thus dispersive equipments of increasing energies were employed to improve the cellulose particles disaggregation. Therefore, ultra-sonic bath, ultra-sonication, and ultra-turrax were used to disperse cellulose nanocrystals in 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol. Dissolved separately in the same solvent, PEF was then poured into the cellulose suspension before casting. The cellulose whiskers were inspected by transmission electron microscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to measure the crystallization temperature, while scanning electron microscopy visualized the cellulose dispersion at the fracture surface. After investigation on the interaction of cellulose/PEF via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the thermal stability of the blends was measured by means of thermogravimetric analysis.

Extensive efforts have been made in the last decade for the development of natural fibre composites. This development paved the way for engineers and researchers to come up with natural fibre composites (NFCs) that exhibit better mechanical properties. The present review is based on the mechanical properties of jute, abaca, coconut, kenaf, sisal, and bamboo fibre-reinforced composites. Before selecting any NFC for a particular application, it becomes necessary to understand its compatibility for the same, which can be decided by knowing its mechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, and impact strengths. This review paper emphasises on the factors influencing the mechanical properties of NFCs like the type of matrix and fibre, interfacial adhesion, and compatibility between matrix and fibre. Efforts are also made to unveil the research gaps from the past literatures, as a result of which it is inferred that there is very limited work published in the field of vibration incorporating potential fillers such as red mud and fly ash with NFCs.

Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was synthesized using a green catalyst, nano-zinc oxide (ZnO). The optimum synthesis conditions of PLA were as follows: a stoichiometric amount of 0.5 wt% of nano-ZnO, polymerization time of 14 h, and polymerization temperature of 170°C. Gel permeation chromatography results showed that the weight-average molecular weight ( M w ) of PLA was 13,072 g/mol with a polydispersity index (PDI) of 1.7. Furthermore, PLA-α-cyclodextrin inclusion compounds (PLA-CD-ICs) were prepared by ultrasonic co-precipitation techniques. X-ray diffraction analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated the change in lattice of α-CD from a cage configuration to a tunnel structure and the existence of some physical interactions between α-CD and PLA in the PLA-CD-ICs. To enhance the crystallization properties of PLA, PLA/PLA-CD-IC composites were blended with different contents of PLA-CD-ICs as nucleating agents. The crystallization behavior and comprehensive performance were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Compared to PLA, the crystallinities of PLA/PLA-CD-IC composites were increased by 24.0%, 26.3%, 27.3%, and 31.8%. The results of all the analyses proved that PLA-CD-ICs were useful as green organic nucleators and improved the comprehensive performance of PLA materials.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to prepare electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers containing betamethasone sodium phosphate (BSP). Two different morphologies including random and aligned orientations were rationally designed to improve the performance of samples in in vitro experiments. By comparing the CA nanofibrous samples with randomly and aligned-oriented morphologies, the scanning electron microscopy images showed that the neat aligned-oriented nanofibers with an average diameter of 180±15 nm could be obtained using a high-speed rotating collector. Subsequently, the tensile test confirmed that the aligned CA nanofibers had higher mechanical properties than that of the randomly oriented ones. Moreover, the BSP release profile obtained by UV-vis spectrophotometry depicted that the aligned samples had an initial burst release of BSP followed by a slow penetration of the drug with a gentle slope during 72 h. Furthermore, the ultimate amounts of BSP released from the random and aligned CA nanofibers into the phosphate buffer solution were 63% and 53%, respectively. Finally, human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells were seeded on both aligned and random electrospun CA nanofibrous samples containing BSP. The thiazolyl blue and hematoxylin and eosin staining results showed that the BSP-loaded nanofibers with the aligned morphology provided the most suitable environment for the cells’ growth, viability, and proliferation.

This study reports on the effect of organic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and silica matrix on the properties of cellulose-based nanocomposites. Nanofibrillated cellulose was isolated from kraft pulp and treated with Pulpzyme HC 2500 enzyme prior to high-pressure homogenization in order to lower energy consumption. Three nanocomposite films were fabricated via the casting process: nanofibrillated cellulose, nanocellulose-PVA (NC-PVA) and nanocellulose-silica (NC-Si). Chemical characterization and crystallization were determined with FTIR. Thermal stability was investigated with thermogravimetric analysis. Morphological alterations were monitored with scanning electron microscopy. A universal testing machine and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis were used for determination of Young’s and storage moduli. The real and imaginary parts of permittivity and electric modulus were evaluated using an impedance analyzer. Considerable alterations were seen under FTIR. Thermal stability was lower in NC-Si than in NC-PVA due to lower crystallinity. Higher Young’s modulus and storage moduli were observed in NC-PVA than in NC-Si. NC-PVA exhibited a singular relaxation process, while a double relaxation process was seen in NC-Si. Consequently, the nanocomposite film prepared from the organic matrix (NC-PVA) had a mechanical advantage for industrial applications. However, neat NC composite revealed the highest storage modulus and thermal stability.

Tissue engineering is a biotechnology that is used to develop biological substitutes to restore, maintain, or improve functions. Thus, the porous scaffolds are used to accommodate cells in tissue engineering. In this research, three dimensional (3D) bi-layered polyurethane (PU)-gelatin nanofibrous scaffolds were prepared by the electrospinning method, after which the capability of the released heparin as an anti-coagulation factor was evaluated. Electrospinning has been extensively investigated for the preparation of fibers that exhibit a high surface area to volume ratio. Results showed that scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs exhibited a smooth surface as well as a highly porous and bead-free structure, in which fibers were distributed in the range of 100–600 nm. The modulus and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decreased and increased, respectively, after crosslinking the reaction of polymers. This process also reduced swelling ratio, the hydrolytic biodegradation rate, and the release rate as a function of time. Moreover, an in vitro assay demonstrated that 3D nanofibrous scaffolds supported L929 fibroblast cell viability and that cells adhered and spread on the fibers. Based on the obtained results, the heparin-loaded electrospinning nanofibrous scaffolds have initial physicochemical and mechanical properties to protect neo-tissue formation.

Porous polymeric scaffolds have been applied successfully in the biomedical field. This work explores the use of an ultrasonic probe to generate cavitation in a polymeric solution, thus producing pores in the polymeric scaffolds. Porous polymeric structures with average pore sizes ranging from 5 to 63 μm and porosity of 6–44% were fabricated by a process consisting of sonication, flash freezing, and lyophilization of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), gelatin (GEL), chitosan (CS) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) solutions. Pore structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and image analysis software. The infrared spectra were analyzed before and after the fabrication process to observe any change in the chemical structure of the polymers. A water absorption test indicated the susceptibility of the samples to retain water in their structure. TGA results showed that GEL experienced degradation at 225°C, CS had a decomposition peak at 280°C, the thermal decomposition of PLGA occurred at 375°C, and PVAL showed two degradation regions. The DSC analysis showed that the glass transition temperature (T g ) of GEL, CS, PLGA and PVAL occurred at 70°C, 80°C, 60°C and 70°C, respectively. The fabricated porous structures demonstrated similar physical characteristics to those found in bone and cartilage.
