In the first chapter of this article, the intention and approach of a theory of communicative action are clarified in general. In the second chapter the whole of theology is defined as a theory of religious practice, corresponding to the epistemological concept of Helmut Peukert. In the third chapter the concept of practical theology as an explicit theological theory of communicative action is developed. The first point is to clarify the understanding of action (or better, practice) in a way that is adequate to a general and a theological theory of action. The second point is to discuss the consequences for practical-theological reflection, especially for its method and for the material questions that it addresses and needs to address.

Beginning with stories of a survivor of sexual abuse and an abuser who sexually abused others, this essay invites readers to reflect on the question: what kind of ecclesiological community could provide a home for the persons in these narratives. Given their needs and desires for a loving community that is safe, supportive, and able to hold them accountable, what kind of local Christian community is possible? The essay suggests that process theology, a theological reform based on the philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead, provides clues for the direction the church can take. Five marks of loving community emerge, shaping responses to the narratives and suggesting practical directions to explore. Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag beginnt mit zwei Erzählungen über einerseits eine Überlebende sexueller Misshandlungen und andererseits eines Täters, der selbst sexuell missbraucht hat. Diese Erzählungen fähren den Autor zu der in diesem Aufsatz verhandelten Frage, von welcher Art eine Kirchengemeinschaft sein müsse, um den Personen dieser Erzählungen eine Heimat bieten zu können. In Anbetracht ihrer Bedürfnisse und Sehnsüchte nach einer liebevollen Gemeinschaft, die ihnen Sicherheit, Unterstützung und einen verantwortungsvollen Umgang bietet, ist welche Form einer lokalen christlichen Gemeinde denkbar? Der Aufsatz erkennt in der Prozess-Theologie, ein theologischer Ansatz basierend auf der Philosophie Alfred North Whiteheads, Lösungspotential für eine Entwicklung der Kirche in diesem Sinn. Fünf Kennzeichen einer liebevollen Gemeinschaft werden dabei deutlich, die Reaktionen auf die Erzählungen ermöglichen und praktische Richtungen der Erforschung vorschlagen.

The modernisation of religion is defined in this article as the effort of religion, in dialogue with ethics and the sciences, to wrestle with the problems of the contemporary world. This article documents that this effort is taking place in the Catholic Church. Thanks to God's call for universal solidarity, the Catholic Church favours an economic order that serves the common good of humanity; it pleads for greater justice regarding immigrants and refugees; it respects the new religious pluralism in theWest, supports the ecological movement, opposes wars and armed interventions, and favours the worldwide multilateralism proposed by the United Nations over the unilateralism preferred by the United States.

This essay offers a theological analysis of trauma, recognizing the difficult questions posed by trauma, which indwells a person's or community's body long after the first traumatizing event(s) has passed. The research draws upon a case study, psychological trauma studies, and neuro-biology in dialogue with a fresh reading of Mark 5:25 – 34, the story of the hemorrhaging woman. The analysis concludes with theological constructs that are significant for understanding trauma and trauma-healing. These are: the importance of bodily encounter, the accent on Jesus' role as witness to radical suffering and healing, and the time-extensive nature of healing. Zusammenfassung Dieser Beitrag liefert eine theologische Analyse des Traumas unter besonderer Berücksichtigung derjenigen durch ein Trauma hervorgerufenen Fragen, die eine Person oder eine Gemeinschaft intensiv beschäftigen, lange nachdem die ersten traumatischen Erfahrungen vergangen sind. Die Analyse stützt sich auf eine Fallstudie, psychologische Trauma-Forschung und die Neurobiologie im Dialog mit dem Versuch einer Relektüre von Markus 5,25 – 34, der Geschichte von der blutflüssigen Frau. Am Ende des Artikels stehen theologische Konzeptionen, die für ein Verstehen von Trauma und die Heilung eines Traumas relevant sind, und zwar die Bedeutung körperlichen Kontakts, die Betonung der Rolle Jesu als Zeuge für drastische Erfahrungen des Leidens und Heilens sowie die Einsicht, dass Heilung ein zeitintensiver Prozess ist.

The so-called “Performative Religionspädagogik” presently serves as a gathering point for various approaches. Particularly, the term “performative” is turning into an umbrella term sheltering highly different projects. Its meaning varies from John Austin's “performative utterances” to the concept of “performance” in cultural studies. The heterogeneous application leads to different didactic-hermeneutic consequences and, thus, vigorous discussions of the strength and weaknesses as well as the scope of the “Performative Religionspädagogik.” This article focuses on the didactics of art and the well-established performance art, hence, seeking to contribute to a sharper comprehension and a more distinct didactic-hermeneutic conception of the “Performative Religionspädagogik.”

Coming from theories of sociology of religion and perspectives of practical theology, this research report presents quantitative empirical research that, using the example of television, shows the relations between media use and religious or para-religious convictions of belief. Empirical findings corroborate the hypothesis that popular media influences the religiosity of its recipients and is used by them as a source of religious orientation in a partly secular society; thus, one can speak of “religious media socialization.” Media religion includes transformed elements of traditional religion, which allows it to perform functions of surrogate religion and build bridges to institutionalized traditional religion. The links between media religion and traditional religion can be built constructively and critically through religious education in schools and in youth and parish-activities of the churches. This requires attentive practical-theological hermeneutics of popular media culture.

In this essay, the authors review and analyze the phenomena identified with secularity and the concept of post-secularity as they are expressed and theorized in Europe. The essay makes a theoretical distinction among the concepts of non-secular, secular, and post-secular, and the authors explore how far these concepts relate to the secularisation debate in Europe when religion is seen not only as an individual practise but also as a public phenomenon. The analysis reveals that religion is related to the social dynamics of European societies in complex ways. Christian religions cannot be reduced to a privately spiritual dimension, but are also related to the public sphere. Practical theologians are challenged to understand these multi-faceted relationships of religion and society, and to explore the possibilities and limitations for religious practice. Zusammenfassung In ihrem Beitrag beschreiben und analysieren die Autoren die Phänomene, die mit dem Begriff der Säkularisierung und dem Konzept der Post-Säkularisierung erfasst und in Europa verfasst und reflektiert werden. Der Aufsatz differenziert in theoretischer Hinsicht diejenigen Ansätze, die die Begriffe nicht-säkular, säkular und post-säkular führen. Dabei erkunden die Autoren, inwiefern diese Konzepte im Zusammenhang mit der Säkularisierungsdebatte in Europa stehen, wenn Religion nicht nur als individuelle religiöse Praxis, sondern auch als öffentliches Phänomen in den Blick gerät. Die Analyse zeigt, dass Religion in komplexen Beziehungen zu sozialen Prozessen der europäischen Gesellschaften steht. Christliche Religionen sind dabei nicht einfach auf die Dimension privater Spiritualität zu reduzieren, sondern zeigen ebenfalls vielfache Verbindungen in den öffentlichen Raum. Praktische Theologen sind deshalb dazu herausgefordert, diese vielseitigen Beziehungen von Religion und Gesellschaft zu verstehen sowie die Chancen und Grenzen religiöser Praxis in dieser Situation auszuloten.
