Ancient Hermeneutics and the Legal Structure of the Book of Ruth

Abstract
This study claims that the book of Ruth constitutes a legal homily whose plot unfolds according to the sequential order of the legal materials found in Deuteronomy 24,16–25,10, and is a commentary upon them. Ancient Near Eastern law codes, such as that of Hammurabi, exhibit the organising principle of associative concatenation or linking of different legal material. Through this reading strategy, the order of those laws in Deuteronomy may be understood as an organic unit. The author of Ruth transposed these laws into a sequence of legal themes that form the structure of his plot.
Abstract
Cette étude voit dans le livre de Ruth une homélie juridique, dont la séquence correspond à celle des matériaux législatifs présents en Deut 24,16–25,10, et dont elle constitue un commentaire. Les codes de lois du Proche-Orient antique, tel le Code d'Hammurabi, présentent une organisation cumulative de données associées ou d'origines différentes. Lorsqu'on se laisse guider par ce modèle de lecture (»reading strategy«), on peut comprendre la séquence de lois en Deut comme une unité organique. L'auteur du livre de Ruth a transposé ces lois en une séquence de thèmes législatifs qui constituent l'ossature de l'action.
Abstract
In dieser Studie wird die These aufgestellt, dass das Buch Ruth eine Rechtshomilie darstellt, deren Verlauf sich entsprechend der Abfolge der Rechtsbestimmungen von Deut 24,16–25,10 entfaltet und einen Kommentar zu diesen bietet. Altorientalische Gesetzessammlungen, wie etwa der Kodex Hammurabi, zeigen als Ordnungsprinzip die assoziative Verkettung oder Verbindung verschiedener Gesetzesmaterialien. Wenn man sich bei der Lektüre von diesem Prinzip leiten lässt (als reading strategy), dann kann die Abfolge der im Deut zusammengestellten Gesetze als organische Einheit verstanden werden. Der Verfasser des Ruthbuches transponierte diese Gesetze in eine Folge von Rechtsthemen, welche die Struktur der Handlung bilden.
