Abstract

The study of geography, especially feminist geography, has not always centered Blackness, or Black women. The Black geographic methodological approach (re)centers Blackness as a unit of analysis to explore the depth and complexity of Black humanity. As such, this chapter focuses on the novel, Beloved (1987) by author Toni Morrison as a literary analysis to explore the protagonist, Sethe, a formerly enslaved woman and her experiences at Sweet Home Plantation and life as a freed woman navigating Black trauma and grief. Through a Black feminist geographic method, this literary analysis highlights the complexities of Black livelihood through Black emotionality (e.g., Black pain, trauma, death, pleasure, joy, and happiness).

Beloved / You are my sister / You are my daughter / You are my face; you are me / I have found you again; you have come back to me / You are my Beloved / You are mine (Morrison, 1987, p. 255).
