Abstract
The industry is using strategic materials of different nature in the form of stacked or hybrid structure. Combinations of carbon fiber-reinforced composites (CFRP) with light metallic alloys are widely used in recent years. Nevertheless, due to the different mechanical properties between the two materials, nonconventional machining technologies are required to obtain a correct final geometry. The wear generated in cutting tools, change of cutting parameters in the interface, and the use of lubricants worsen the final performance of the process. For these reasons, abrasive waterjet machining (AWJM) is an appropriate and sustainable technology for the simultaneous machining of dissimilar materials. Research focused on the optimization of cutting parameters, machining strategies, predictive models, or geometrical defects has been developed in recent years. This book chapter focuses on AWJM of hybrid structures and the progress achieved in recent years in order to show the current trends.
