Abstract

The initial two sections of this chapter aim at briefly introducing the Galician language within the broader context of the major Romance languages, including its historical origins, its geographical extension, and the major dialectal groupings based on well-documented linguistic features. The remainder of the chapter addresses the major phonetic and phonological features of Galician, with special emphasis on its phonemic inventory, patterns of allophonic distribution, and dialectal variation, as well as its prosody, including syllable structure, stress, and intonation, with reference to the most important studies on Galician phonetics/phonology carried out in the past.
