Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the phonetics and phonology of Modern Standard Romanian, the principal Daco-Romanian variety. It describes and exemplifies the language’s phonological inventory, phonological processes affecting vowels and consonants, acoustic patterns (particularly among vowels), basic stress patterns, and intonational tunes. Attention is given to phenomena that differentiate Romanian from other Romance languages, including its central vowels and diphthongs, metaphony, secondary palatalization, and tolerance for complex consonant clusters. Throughout the chapter, interactions between morphology and phonology are also highlighted. Stress patterns are shown to be largely predictable based on prosodic word boundaries, while the intonational patterns of Romanian can be captured via an autosegmental, ToBI-style approach. The chapter emphasizes recent scholarly works, including theoretical contributions, large-scale phonetic analyses, and studies of variation in Romanian.
