3 Processes affecting vowels

Abstract

The chapter deals with several processes affecting vowels in Romance. Some of these processes operate on stressed vowels, i.e. metaphony and vowel harmony, diphthongization, lengthening, changes in quality and merging. Others involve unstressed vowels, namely, vowel reduction as well as syncope, and epenthesis, which are touched on very briefly. The chapter closes with changes which may occur in two-vowel sequences within the word domain and across a word boundary such as the gliding of high vowels and the deletion of central vowels. Not only synchronic processes but also diachronic developments (i.e. sound changes) are subject to investigation depending on their relevance, and their theoretical implications are emphasized.
