Abstract

Investing her inheritance to fund and run a mobile front line hospital for French soldiers in 1914, Mary Borden was actively involved at the Western Front for the whole duration of the war. She distilled her experiences in what was to become one of the most compelling female war testimonies and a modernist milestone at the same time: The Forbidden Zone. Different in style and content, her semi-autobiographical novel Sarah Gay explores the life of a British upper-class woman who runs away from an unhappy marriage, finds fulfilment as war nurse in France, and finally transforms herself into a self-determined modern woman. Both texts reflect the gender issues connected with the First World War: emancipation, war nursing and female trauma.
