Abstract
Beginning with his background as a musician, this chapter charts the emergence of Ivor Gurney’s poetry during the First World War, and its development in the years following the Armistice. It details some of the influences on his poetry, and explores the key tropes and characteristics of his work, including the importance of his place as an ordinary soldier; a common Private. With reference to a late collection of war poems, Memories of Honour, the chapter examines how these ideas develop, and also relates something of the chequered reception and publication history of Gurney’s work.
