Between reflection and reflexivity

Abstract

In this commentary, I will offer some thoughts on the preceding chapters and their contributions to reflective and reflexive research in Applied Linguistics. We must, of course, first acknowledge that contemporary Applied Linguistics is a multidisciplinary field — no longer confined to linguistics, nor reducible to second (i.e., additional or foreign) language acquisition or (ELT). I will begin with a brief historical snapshot of developments across the field to locate this volume in relation to ongoing scholarly conversations. I then examine some of the ways reflection and reflexivity have been defined and applied in qualitative inquiry, before concluding with some suggestions for advancing both theory and practice.
