De Gruyter Studienbuch
The present textbook gives an impressive account of the significance of fibulae for costumes, chronology and craftsmanship from the Bronze Age to the Viking period, but also for ethnic and classical topics in the broadest sense. It caters for students’ urgent need for a survey of the fibula as a central artefact but also presents an unrevised reprint of the comprehensive account of fibulae and costumes from volume 8 of the Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde.
The text book describes modern phonological theories at a level which is advanced and yet easy to understand. The book is intended mainly for beginning as well as advanced students of general and German linguistics, but is also suitable for self-study.
This textbook is a basic introduction to phonetics as a subdiscipline of general linguistics. All areas of phonetics are presented in depth (phonation, articulation, acoustics, perception, etc.), along with a short history of the discipline. The main objective of this introduction is to present the phonetic phenomena observable in vocal communication and the processes associated with them in the physical world as use of our biological endowment for communicative purposes.
This is a textbook for German Studies and a critical linguistic analysis of texts; it provides a semantics of the sentence and a theory of sentence contents, and thus complements a grammatical syntax of German. The increasingly compressed style of German public language usage has complicated and muddied the relationship between sentence structure and sentence content. Clarity is restored by turning grammar round on the basis of a practical semantics.
After the completion of the Theologische Realenzyklopädie in 2004, a newly compiled index will give access to the whole work. Volume 1 of the complete index gives a complete listing of all place references, subjects, and bible quotations. Volume 2 gives a complete listing of personal names.
The newly-compiled index now appears unabridged in an easy-to-handle paperback edition.
Over recent decades, linguistic theory has gone through many decisive innovations and developments. A particular role in all these developments has been played by what are known as functional descriptions of language.
This textbook presents a concise account of the most important theories in functional grammar from the last 40 years - functional grammar, systemic functional grammar, cognitive grammar, construction grammar, and grammaticalisation theory.
Every philosophical involvement with language centres on the notion of representation. There is controversy over what language represents. The answers can be classified and used as a basis for a systematic survey:
1. Language represents the world.
2. Language does not represent the world but our ideas of the world.
3. Language represents our ideas (of the world) badly.
4. Language not only represents badly; it does not represent anything.
5. Without language there would be no representation of a higher order and thus no thought.
The main intention behind this introduction to linguistic philosophy lies in revealing the underlying ordering principle for the many simultaneous and non-simultaneous attempts at a philosophy of language.
This single-volume standard work on the history of the German language has now been revised and updated. It provides a profound overview using the latest research on language change in German from its Indo-European antecedents up to the present day. As language history, social history and political history are closely intertwined, this textbook is designed for students of all language disciplines, for students of German as a foreign language, and also for historians, social scientists, teachers and interested non-specialists.
The "classic" introduction to the study of German personal names is now re-available in a completely revised and updated version. It provides a popular overview of the variety of aspects, questions and research findings in the field and opens up perspectives for further research. This introductory work is aimed at students and teachers in higher education, but is also of interest to school teachers and general readers.
This is the third edition of the successful introduction to the philosophy of mind. Revised to reflect the current standing of discussion, this book provides a systematic overview of contemporary debate in philosophy of mind. The various positions regarding the mind-body problem are presented with arguments for and against them in order to give the reader a short but comprehensive view of the subject.
The concept of spirituality is used often and with many different shades of meaning. This textbook works from a phenomenological approach to the manifestations of lived faith to provide a specifically Christian definition and content. The theological reflection on central questions (justification/sanctification, discretio) leads on to an exemplary presentation of methods and media which at the same time open up potentials for contemporary experiences with the holy.
- Multi-faceted picture of manifestations of Christian faith today and in historical perspective
- Phenomenological approach plus theological reflection on different aspects of Christian spirituality
- Of interest to students, scholars as well as general audience
This book is a standard work for modern narrative theory. It is a German translation and expansion of the Russian work Narratologija (Moscow 2003) and presents a comprehensive foundation for narratology. The author explains and discusses in detail problems of communication structure and instances, narrative perspective, the relationship between narrator's text and character's text, and the narrativity of literary texts and the texts as events. The focus is formed by the constitutive structures of fictional narrative texts. The book postulates a theory of narration and analyses central narratological categories such as fiction, mimesis, author, reader, narrator, narrative perspective, text, story, narrative time etc. against the background of the history of narrative research. The result is a fundamental definition of the constitutive characteristics of narrative texts which provides a terminological and theoretical system of reference for future research in narrative theory. A detailed bibliography and glossary of narratological terms make this book a compendium of narrative theory which is of relevance for scholars and students of all literary disciplines.
Vischer’s Wortkunde (“vocabulary”) has rapidly established itself as a standard work at university level. Its aim is to provide the user with the vocabulary required to read fluently. To this end the book deals mainly with the most commonly read authors: Cicero, Caesar, Sallust, Livy, Tacitus, Terence, Virgil, Horace and Ovid. The vocabulary provides the basis for understanding other poets and authors.
The book provides a clear introduction to heroic poetry in medieval German, English and Scandinavian literature, from its first appearance to its final demise in the 16th cen-tury. It presents the texts in their historical context, provides synopses and discusses their themes and their intentions, together with the problems they present for scholars. In the process it demonstrates how the old sagas were being continually re-interpreted in widely varying geographical and cultural contexts.
Few problem areas of the disciplines concerned with textual interpretation have led to such intensive and controversial discussion as the relationships between literature and knowledge. This textbook aims to document the most important approaches and research perspectives, to introduce productive models and analyse exemplary variants of the interplay between literature and knowledge orders. A glossary gives rapid access to central terms; a comprehensive bibliography allows the reader to consult further material on the topic.
With its combination of documentation, systematic modelling and historical exemplification, the textbook provides an instructive introduction to a topic area that already plays an important role in literary and cultural studies, a role that will be of increasing significance in the future.
Gottfried Benn (1886-1956) is one of the most significant modern German lyric poets. This introduction to his life and work provides a concise biography, a characterisation of his complete works, and a selected bibliography. For students and those with an interest in literature it opens up an informative first approach to understanding his complex work and gaining access to the vast body of research on Benn. It presents an ideal complement to the Benn Handbook, the Benn Bibliography and the annual Benn Forum, all of which also appear in Walter de Gruyter's literary studies list.
Cognitive grammar transforms insights from the cognitive sciences into grammatical descriptions and attempts to use the grammar of natural languages to understand human thinking. The presentation is centred on the classical paradigms of Cognitive grammar as they have been developed from 1975 and later systematically expanded. The initial chapters deal with the questions of the nature of thought and how experiences are converted into language. Subsequent sections indicate the perspectives of how neurolinguistic insights can be deepened.
Working on the basis of modern narratological theories, this book introduces the reader to the poetics of epic texts from the Middle Ages and thus provides a foundation for the independent analysis of pre-modern narrative structures. The introduction takes as its starting point theories of time and space from Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and among others elucidates the concepts developed by Aristotle, Plato and Augustine. From this basis in the history of ideas, it then explains the characteristics of the fictive geography of medieval texts and their projected landscapes, which are strongly influenced by the rhetorical theories and topoi of the Western tradition. Using the categories of ‘space’ and ‘time’, this introduction provides an accessible entry to central phenomena and concepts of medieval narrative literature.
Analytical Introduction to Ethics is the second volume in the series of “analytical introductions” to the disciplines of philosophy. It gives an overview of the problems in moral philosophy and of the ethical answers to questions of essence, functions, and content of morality.
In addition to the hardcover edition, the Theologische Realenzyklopädie is available as a paperback edition.
In 1993, the first part of the TRE (vols. 1-17: Aaron - Katechismuspredigt) was published as a paperback edition, the second part (vols. 18-27: Katechumenat/Katechumenen - Publizistik/Presse) followed in paperback in 1999. Both parts include detailed subject indexes (1-17; 1-27). The third and final part of the paperback edition (Pürstinger - Zypern) has been published 2006.
The index volumes (published 2006 and 2007) are also available as paperback.
The paperback volumes do not includ the plates and/or fold-out maps that are included in the bound edition.
This textbook presents a profile of Christianity through its main conflicts. It describes the challenges presented by Modernism and the other world religions. It sketches the main thematic areas which have shaped and continue to shape the development of Christianity in its internal and external conflicts. This succinct presentation of the Christian Faith for students offers also a good basis for discussion for the dialog between religions.
The Grammar is intended as a textbook to support Hebrew classes which gives the teachers the maximum latitude for the selection and application of different teaching methods and for the students simplifies the tasks of learning, looking up and repetition with its clear and transparent ordering of the teaching material. In its design, the work dispenses with a division into lessons, and from the outset bases its processing of the material on the biblical texts. The work is complemented by a comprehensive collection of texts and a highly structured vocabulary.
- innovative textbook based on the author’s and editors’ course work
- two-colour-print provides easy access
In his verse romance “Erec”, Hartmann von Aue was the first German poet to recount the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. The introduction first provides a detailed analysis of the contents, and goes into peculiarities of the portrayal of the characters, the narrative stance and the relationship to the French source. Further chapters deal with the history of the text, the structure and poetics of the romance, the narrative style, the material and sources, and the history of its reception and influence.
It seems to be self-evident that through perception we gain access to the material world. That visual perception takes an important role seems self-evident as well. But what exactly do we see? The objects themselves or just their perceptible properties? How do we manage to see something at all? Are we capable of seeing solely through optical and physiological processes or does viewing something asks for presupposed terms in order to help us to see something as something?
These questions, currently discussed at great length within the framework of cognitive and epistemological theory, were already cause for intensive debate in the early modern times. In many aspects, those discussions in the 17th and 18th century laid the groundwork for today’s theories: on one hand, they identified the problems with great clarity and on the other, they provided strategies for possible solutions which are still of value today.
This volume will provide new access to those debates (from Descartes to Reid) and will present these debates to an audience interested in philosophical questions. The book shows that the early modern times is not just a respectable museum in the history of philosophy, but on the contrary, a very productive and stimulating philosophical epoch which invites further discussion.
Thomas Grundmann provides an introduction to the most important fundamental questions and problems of epistemology. He describes current positions and arguments. This is a critical guide both for non-specialist readers from a variety of disciplines and for specialists in philosophy.
Key Features:
- Introduction to the most important fundamental topics in the theory of knowledge
- Equally suited for readers without previous knowledge in the field and for specialists
The Prolegomena zur Geschichte Israels (first published in 1878 under the title Geschichte Israels I, and as of 18832 under the first-named title) by Julius Wellhausen (1844-1918) contains a concise summary and decisive further development of critical scholarship on the Old Testament in the 19th century. Wellhausen's source criticism and "Tendenzkritik" as exercised in the Prolegomena became the basis of further scholarly research on the Old Testament.
For decades the Prolegomena stood in the shadow of research dominated by form criticism, but recent epigraphic and iconographic scholarship has lent Wellhausen's reconstruction of the religion of pre-exilic Israel new relevancy. This book, written fluently and absorbingly, provided with an index of references, is here again made available twenty years after the last reprint.
Constituent analysis is one of the basic skills required of prospective specialists in German studies and is therefore a mandatory component of university teaching. The textbook offers a detailed overview of the theoretical concepts and terminology of constituent analysis, which are explained by way of numerous applied examples and sample analyses, and supplemented by exercises and an index. As a result, the book provides the reader with a universally applicable tool for accurately identifying individual constituents (main clause, subordinate clause, object, predicate, attribute, etc.) and can also be used for self-study. The book also gives well-founded insights into the syntactic structure of the German language and facilitates language comparison in foreign language teaching. Although the book is especially intended for students, it will also serve as a fundamental teaching aid for student teachers, as well as teachers and instructors of linguistics.
- Detailed introduction to constituent analysis
- Valuable preparatory work for the study of linguistics
- Relevant for university study, school education and self-study
- With numerous examples and sample analyses
This volume offers a systematic overview of Kantian philosophy and of central currents and developments in contemporary philosophy.

As yet, a good German translation does not exist of this pivotal work, nor is an introduction available which explains the central topics in a comprehensible yet authoritative manner. This gap is filled by the present work which uses key themes from Thomasian philosophy (and theology) to provide an introduction to the overall conception of the Summa theologiae.
The review of the present state of research on the Summa theologiae provides a comprehensive handbook particularly suited for university teaching. It is designed not only for the specialist reader but equally for those with a general interest in the subject.
The most important thinkers in the history of the philosophy of mind are presented from the point of view of analytical philosophy: Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, Augustine, Thomas of Aquinas, Descartes, Malebranche, Hume, Kant, and Husserl.
This introductory work offers a fundamental, instructional, and easy-to-read outline of all the aspects of stylistics from, among others, a text-linguistic perspective. The work covers, for example, the functional types of style, stylistic competence, style and context, the communicative effects of stylistic means, and stylistic coherence. The work ties in with the most current research and extensively discusses results from discourse analysis and functional grammar.
Key Features:
- Comprehensive introduction to German stylistics
- Special consideration of the function of speech and writing styles in certain communicative situations
- Suitable as basic reading for course work and for self-study
This book sets itself three objectives. Firstly, it aims to provide a general and readable insight into the phenomenon of language in order to gain the reader's attention for this fascinating and uniquely human ability; secondly, it sees itself not only as an introduction to language but also as a fully-fledged introduction to linguistics which deals with all branches of the subject, and thirdly, the readers should be motivated and sensitised to continue their studies of language from a scientific standpoint on their own initiative.
The “Preuschen” continues to be an important reference text book for studying the New Testament. It offers the basic vocabulary of the most commonly used terms in the New Testament, as well as, specific grammatical constructions. Thus this Greek-German Dictionary is an indispensable tool for students, teachers for religious studies and clergy alike.
The 8th edition has been revised and corrected.

In the debate about the moral status of human embryos, it is not always clear which arguments are actually being disputed. This textbook offers students, researchers, and interested laypersons an efficient way to find information about the current state of the discussion and to familiarize themselves quickly with the most important arguments.

Dictionaries make fascinating reading when they are seen in their historical, educational and linguistic context. Working from a modern cultural perspective, the author uses her own research and the research of others to tell the story of German language dictionaries, and in doing so throws light on the viewpoints of dictionary authors and users and on dictionaries' academic and social dimensions.
This introductory work consists of two parts. In the first part, the most important aspects of analytic speech act theory are described and discussed. A central part of this is defining a general concept of human action and the question of how we communicatively handle actions. In the second part of the introduction, the basic assumptions of a theory of speech acts are discussed based on the speech act theories by Austin and Searle, as well as on Grice's communication theory.
This reference work offers a representative and reliable survey of classical, medieval, and modern history in regards to the philosophical term, “truth”. Unrivalled, this all-encompassing study about the history of one of philosophy’s most central concepts is not only for academics in the field, but also for students of other faculties, as well as, anyone who finds the subject of interest.
Although there is still no general agreement on the exact functions of linguistic pragmatics and the fields of activity it covers, it can generally be understood as the relationship of language to its users and the resultant practical applications of language. Thus it is one of the main concerns of research in this field to achieve a better understanding and account of the influence of extra-linguistic factors on language.
In this introduction to the field, "pragmalinguistics" is seen as a field within the more general subject of "pragmatics". The book aims to familiarize those interested in linguistics with the problems and methods of what is still an "open" field of enquiry and to present its main topic areas - pragmalinguistics as a general semiotic theory, as speech act theory, as the linguistics of conversation, and as text linguistics.
