E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776‒1822) was a universally gifted artist, musician, lawyer and writer whose fantastic tales and romantic fairy stories have had a decisive influence on world literature. This handbook reflects the current state of research with information on the wide diversity of his fields of activity, on the historical and aesthetic prerequisites for his literary, musical and legal work, on the individual works themselves, on the history of their reception and on systematic aspects such as mediality, poetics, character drawing etc. In addition, it provides a comprehensive bibliography together with short biographies of people connected with Hoffmann.
This volume presents in alphabetical order revised articles on Old High German literature from the second edition of the lexicon of authors (Medieval German Literature: Lexicon of Authors, 2nd Edition, 1978–2008). A number of scholars involved in current research were chosen as editors. The work thus provides a coherent presentation of the current state of research on Old High German literature.

With his own literary production and his literary scholarship and criticism, Ludwig Tieck (1773‑1853) was a determining figure in literature and cultural activity around 1800 and in the epochal situation after the (Goethean) ‘art period’. This reference work presents Tieck’s life and times, locates his work in its aesthetic tradition and describes his poetics and commitment as a literary critic, editor and literary scholar. Individual texts are analysed in detail, within the context of his complete work and within the context of their time. Another strong focus lies on the impact and reception of Tieck’s work. The articles are complemented by a complete bibliography of research.

This historical survey of European encyclopedias and dictionaries brings together both encyclopaedias, such as the ‘Britannica’ or the German ‘Brockhaus,’ i.e. factual reference works, and dictionaries, such as ‘Webster’s’ or the German ‘Duden,’ i.e. linguistic reference works, as outside specialist circles little distinction is made between information about ‘things’ and information about words and their meanings.
From the Vocabolario della Accademia de la Crusca from 1612, via the great French Encyclopédie up to present-day works such as Wahrig, Duden and Wikipedia, the field of relevant works becomes increasingly tightly-knit. The individual reference works are described in historical portraits, and their particular lexicographical methodologies analysed.
