This essay attempts to state in “desperate brevity” that since the Renaissance and the Reformation ideas have had an important impact on the course of history because of technical and material changes in intellectual life. Because of an intellectual mobilization “beginning” with the invention of printing, developments in one country have received a ready intellectual response in others with the result that impulses for change have been felt where they did not originate. Nationalism or the attempt to define and advance the identity of one’s country has been a noteworthy consequence of these developments.
