This paper deals with the historical development of theories of German punctuation from the 15 th century till today. The focal point lies on the period. A comparison of the different ways of theoretical explanations about how punctuation works shows an interesting change: Older theories focused the role of punctuation and likewise the period for the reader; later theories ignore the role of the reader and see punctuation marks as markers for specific linguistic constructions. The paper wants to show the reasons for this change of perspectives. At the same time I want to rehabilitate the early attempts of explaining punctuation: a modern theory of written language and its use can show that a reader oriented online-perspective on punctuation is more adequate to the data than a construction oriented offline-perspective. The analysis leads to some more general assumptions about how punctuation as a whole supports the process of reading.

The present paper traces the development of the generic masculine as a linguistic convention focusing on its origin and use in German. Examining theories of grammatical gender from ancient times to the 20th century reveals that the generic use of the masculine cannot be regarded as a merely formal feature of language but as an expression of zeitgeist as well as contemporary social and cultural conditions. Historically, the convention of the masculine as a generic gender goes along with the idea of a semantic relation between gender and sex as well as the notion of the masculine gender being more worthy than the feminine. The findings at hand not only illustrate the increasing sexualisation of the grammatical gender concept over the centuries but also point to the dissenting voices that were raised against this trend. How the convention was implemented and to what extent it lead to problems of ambiguous reference will be outlined by focusing mainly on legal language and terminology. In this area the question of whether generic expressions refer to men or women or to both sexes has always had particular relevance.

The paper examines the language attitudes in non-dominating language communities of pluricentric languages. It asks in what way the fact of being a speaker of a non-dominating language community influences the perception of the own competence and of the evaluation of the different standard varieties of the pluricentric language. By examining the attitudes towards Swiss Standard German in German-speaking Switzerland it argues that speakers of non-dominating language communities often have the notion that their own standard variety being deficient combined with a feeling of lingual inferiority towards the speakers of the dominating community. Thus, the standard variety of the dominating community serves as a prestigious variety. In Switzerland these attitudes strongly correlate with the age of the acquisition of Standard German and the negative attitudes towards Germans. Finally the paper raises the question whether the concept of pluricentricity can adequately be used when there ist no awareness of pluricentricity among the speakers. The data presented derives from two empirical studies conducted in Switzerland in the summer of 2003: a survey on language attitudes and a subjective evaluation test.

The paper analyses the structure of sentences like German Die Frist ist um (or English It's over ), where prepositions without complements function as predicates. Several possible explanations for the occurrence of such forms are explored and found unsatisfactory, e. g. the assumption of elliptical constructions or of verb particles linked to the copula verb sein . Explanations limited to the German language cannot help, since the same kind of construction can be observed in other languages, too. However, this specific sentence type seems to be restricted to local prepositions, paralleling the syntactic distribution of local (but not modal, causal etc.) adverbs in this regard. Consequently, the general nature of local expressions in the languages of the world is being discussed, and the diachronic development of local prepositions in German is taken into account. It turns out that not only were all German local prepositions originally members of other word classes, but most of them still are adverbs. The astonishing fact that there is layering of different states of grammaticalization over such a long period of time explains why predicative use of local prepositions without complements is possible, while the specific treatment of these elements by itself points to the exceptional position – in cognitive terms – of local conceptions.

The layman transcribes his dialect-texts in accordance with the conventions of the spelling. The article argues that he follows these inherent rules, partly unconsciously. Therefore his dialect-writing can prove the rules of two identical letters after a stressed vowel. In the german linguistics there is a discussion, if the rules are better founded by syllabic or quantitative regularities. The empiric result is that the layman's writing is better to be explained by the quantitative hypothesis. It is argued that there is a change of rules during the last centuries: in the 16th and 17th century the rules were syllabicly based; by the influence of the morphemic principle there came a turn to a quantitative basis in the 18th century (evidently by the graphemic integration of loanwords). It may be possible that the rules turn back to the syllabic basis in the 21th century because of the increasing stock of english loanwords like english “job -jobbing” to german “Job -jobben”.

In this paper, the term ‘attribute’ will be discussed with regard to the entire system of German. Attributes are not only modifiers of nouns, but also of adjectives ( erstaunlich gut ), of noun phrases ( ein interessanter kanadischer Film ), of prepositional phrases ( am Haus rechts ), etc. Therefore, even uninflected adjectives and adverbs can be attributes. For example, they are attributes to adjectives ( erstaunlich gut, sehr gut ). But if erstaunlich is an attribute in erstaunlich gut then might dem Kind in dem Kind fremd also be an attribute? Can complements be attributes as well? If so, it makes sense to differentiate attributes as supplements (adjuncts) and attributes as complements. In addition, it can also be shown that attributes can also modify noun phrases, prepositional phrases and other phrases.

Die Protestbewegung der 1960er und 1970er Jahre werden nicht mehr allein in Erinnerungsliteratur und Feuilletons aufgearbeitet, sondern sind im vergangenen Jahrzehnt auch zum Gegenstand der historischen Wissenschaften geworden. Dies zeigt sich an der gewachsenen Zahl von Neuerscheinungen und Tagungen zum Thema. Dabei ist bemerkenswert, dass die Geschichtsschreibung von ehemaligen Aktivisten und Betroffenen immer mehr auf Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler übergeht, die keine Zeitzeugen waren. Von diesem Generationenwechsel ist ein neuer Blick auf diese sozialen Bewegungen zu erwarten. So arbeiten gegenwärtig zahlreiche Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und –wissenschaftler aus Linguistik, Geschichtswissenschaft, Politologie, Soziologie und Literaturwissenschaft an Forschungsprojekten, die bislang vernachlässigte Aspekte der 1960er Jahre in den Blick nehmen. Das „Interdisziplinäre Forschungskolloquium Protestbewegungen“ bietet Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen und –wissenschaftlern ein Forum, in dem sie neue Zugänge zur Historisierung und wissenschaftlichen Behandlung der Studentenbewegung diskutieren können.

In the year 1918, Leo Spitzer presented a lecture in the Viennese Urania, a lecture he also published during that same year, entitled: “Anti-Chamberlain”, or, more precisely: “Anti-Chamberlain: Reflections by a linguist on Houston Stewart Chamberlain's ‘War Essays’ and a general linguistic assessment by Dr. Leo Spitzer”. It is well know that Chamberlain was the prophet of racial anti-Semitism during the waning years of the 19 th century, and that his writings, published in editions running well into the hundreds of thousands, influenced not only the intellectual middle class but also, in a very particular way, Hitler and the nationalistic radical movement. For a Professor to present a lecture against this man and against his writings suggests a direct intervention of an academic discipline in the public discourse-a discourse that was shaped, to be sure, by war weariness but also by a presentable and tolerated anti-Semitism.

This paper discusses two hypotheses concerning the etymology of German Kaff ‘sleepy village, backwaters’, which derives from Rotwelsch Kaff ‘village’: (a) Rotw. Kaff derives from Romani gāw ‘village’ (Wolf). (b) Rotw. Kaff is a Yiddish acronymic abbreviation of Yiddish kefar ‘village’ (Avé-Lallemant). It is argued that Wolf's hypothesis is phonologically unlikely, that his argument against a Yiddish origin cannot stand up against scrutiny and that he either overlooked, or did not understand, Avé-Lallemant's hypothesis, which is phonologically likely and in accordance with a certain linguistic practice of older Yiddish.

Indo-European * kt and * pt changed according to Grimm's law in Common Germanic * ht and * ft in 3 rd c. B.C. at the latest, in any case before Teutones got in touch with the Romans. Nevertheless, there are old borrowings from Latin into West Germanic in which Latin ct and pt appear as * ht and * ft , e.g. L. fructus > OFris. frucht , OHG. and OS. fruht (cf. G. Frucht , Du. vrucht ). Such changes, which obviously do not belong to the well-known Germanic sound shifting, should be regarded as a specific West Germanic phonematic substitution. The words presented in this article show a trace in Modern German of the phonematic substitution mentioned: dichten , trachten , Dachtel , Pacht , Trichter , nüchtern , resp. Gruft , Schrift etc.

0. Einleitung Nur selten erscheinen Wörterbücher, die sowohl Werkzeuge als auch Manifeste sein wollen. Im Regelfall sind sie nur Werkzeuge und manchmal nicht einmal das. Für die germanistische Linguistik ist 2004 ein Wörterbuch erschienen, das zu den wichtigsten des Jahrzehnts, ja vielleicht des Jahrhunderts gehört, und das in der Tat sowohl Werkzeug als auch Programm ist: das Variantenwörterbuch des Deutschen (VWD). Dabei trügt der Titel: Es handelt sich keineswegs bloβ um ein Wörterbuch über Varianten der deutschen Lexik. Wäre es nur das gewesen, hätte es nicht die Bedeutung, die ihm tatsächlich zukommt. Das Wörterbuch stellt nämlich den Gipfelpunkt einer Entwicklung innerhalb der germanistischen Linguistik dar, die vor ein paar Jahrzehnten angefangen hat und mit dem VWD zwar nicht abgeschlossen ist, mit ihm aber vielleicht einen möglichen Katalysator für eine qualitativ neue Phase dieser Entwicklung gefunden hat. Die Entwicklung kann als die Bewusstwerdung der Plurizentrik des Deutschen bezeichnet werden. In diesem Kommentar werden der Begriff Plurizentrismus, dessen mögliche Relevanz für die Auslandsgermanistik, das Internet als Quelle für die (Varietäten-)Linguistik sowie das Wörterbuch selbst diskutiert. Dabei wird generell nur auf die drei Vollzentren (Ammon 1995) des Deutschen eingegangen.

Der „XV. International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences“ vereinte unter dem Tagungstitel „Humankind / Nature Interaction: Past, Present and Future“ in der heutigen anthropologischen und ethnologischen Forschung relevante Themenbereiche wie z. B. „Primatology and Human Evolution“, „Genetics Technologies and their Anthropological Implications“, „Food and Health“, „Ethnic Identities and Ethnic Interactions“, „Forest Management, Climate Change and The Future of Mankind“, „Urban Anthropology“, „Aggression and Collective Violence: Ethnic and Ideological Conflict and Human Rights“. In den Hauptveranstaltungen präsentierten die jeweiligen Vorsitzenden die wichtigsten Ergebnisse der sogenannten „pre-sessions,“ die vom 5. bis 7. Juli stattfanden, und machten diese einem breiteren Publikum bekannt.

An der Universität Pisa fand mit Unterstützung des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes und der Alexander-von-Humboldt-Stiftung vom 21. bis 23. Oktober 2004 eine Fachtagung zum Thema Texte in Sprachforschung und Sprachunterricht statt. Es sollten Neue Wege der italienisch-deutschen Kooperation in der Sprachgermanistik gebahnt werden, womit unter anderem an die Tagung Deutsche Sprachwissenschaft in Italien (Rom, Februar 2004; vgl. Institut für Deutsche Sprache, Mannheim, Sprachreport 2/2004, S. 32f.) angeknüpft wurde.

Brauchen wir oder haben wir sogar bereits eine Diskurslinguistik? Dieser Frage ging das Symposion „Diskurslinguistik. Methoden – Gegenstände – Grenzen“ nach, zu dem sich vom 1.–3. September etwa 45 Vertreterinnen und Vertreter verschiedener Fächer (hauptsächlich aber Germanisten) zusammengefunden haben. Initiiert und organisiert worden ist es von Kirsten Adamzik (Genf) und Ingo Warnke (Kassel).

Vom 6. bis zum 8. Oktober 2004 fand an der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster ein Workshop zum Thema „Konstruktionen in der Interaktion“ statt, der von Susanne Günthner und Wolfgang Imo vom Germanistischen Institut veranstaltet wurde. Sie konnten dazu ca. dreißig LinguistInnen aus ganz Deutschland begrüßen. Das Programm umfasste elf Beiträge, die sich mit Form, Funktion und Bedeutung verschiedener grammatischer „Konstruktionen“ auseinander setzten. Die Vorträge knüpften an Erkenntnisse aus den Bereichen „Syntax “, „Construction Grammar “, „interaktionale Linguistik“ sowie „Gesprächs-“ und „Konversationsanalyse“ an.

Der vorliegende Artikel soll eine Orientierungshilfe geben, einen Überblick über einschlägige Eingangsportale verschaffen sowie eine Auswahl besonders nützlicher Einzelangebote vorstellen. Dabei können lediglich diejenigen Webangebote berücksichtigt werden, die sich insgesamt thematisch auf Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF) und Deutsch als Zweitsprache (DaZ) spezialisieren; solitäre Inhalte wie vereinzelte Publikationen, die in einem thematisch anders angesiedelten Rahmen zur Verfügung gestellt werden, mussten aus Platzgründen unberücksichtigt bleiben.
