Abstract: The article re-examines the hypothesis that mass migration of Israelite refugees accounted for the growth of Jerusalem and Judah in the late 8th century and for the »Israelization« of Judah from the late 8th century onward. Systematic examination of all the textual and archaeological evidence available indicates that the hypothesis lacks concrete foundation. The growth of Judah and Jerusalem was gradual and took many years, and no deus ex machina explanation is necessary to account for it. The adoption of Israelite identity by the Judaean royal house and elite was also gradual, beginning after the Assyrian annexation of the Kingdom of Israel and developing over the course of many years. Résumé: Cette étude réexamine l’hypothèse selon laquelle c’est une immigration massive de réfugiés venant d’Israël qui aurait contribué à l’extension de la ville de Jérusalem à la fin du 8ème siècle et à l’ »Israélisation« de Juda à partir de cette date. Or un examen systématique des données textuelles et archéologiques disponibles montre que cette hypothèse est sans fondement. L’accroissement de Juda et de Jérusalem se fit progressivement et il n’est nul besoin de convoquer ici un deus ex machina . De même, le fait que la maison royale et l’élite de Juda aient adopté une identité israélite constitue un phénomène progressif, débutant avec l’annexion assyrienne du royaume d’Israël et se déroulant durant des décennies. Zusammenfassung: Der Artikel untersucht erneut die Hypothese, dass eine Masseneinwanderung israelitischer Flüchtlinge für das Wachstum von Jerusalem und Juda im späten 8. Jahrhundert und für die »Israelitisierung« Judas vom späten 8. Jahrhundert an verantwortlich sei. Eine systematische Überprüfung aller textlichen und archäologischen Befunde deutet darauf hin, dass die Hypothese schwach begründet ist. Das Wachstum von Juda und Jerusalem geschah schrittweise und dauerte viele Jahre, und kein deus ex machina muss für die Erklärung herangezogen werden. Auch dass das Königshaus und die Oberschicht Judas israeli tische Identität angenommen haben, war ein schrittweiser Prozess, der mit der assyrischen Annexion des Königreichs Israel begann und sich über Jahrzehnte hin fortsetzte.

Abstract: In Gen 22,1.12 and Ex 20,20 »testing by God« and »fear of God« are not yet connected with a Dtr understanding of the law, as they are in Dtn 5,29; 8,2 f. Further, here Moses is not yet understood as a lawgiver but as a prophet, who leads Israel out of Egypt (cf. Hos 12,14). Gen 22,1–14*.19 and Ex 20,18–21 should therefore not be dated in the post-exilic period, but go back to circles that transmitted north Israelite judgement prophecy (cf. the concept of the hiddenness of God in Gen 20–22*). Résumé: En Gen. 22,1.12 et Ex. 20,20, les expressions: »l’épreuve par Dieu« et »la crainte de Dieu« ne se rapportent pas encore – comme en Deut. 5,29; 8,2s. – à une compréhension deutéronomiste de la Loi. De même, Moïse n’apparaît pas encore comme dispensateur de la Loi, mais comme prophète qui guide Israël hors d’Egypte (cf. Os. 12,14). Gen. 22,1–14* et Ex. 20,18–21 ne doivent ainsi être datés après l’Exil, mais remontent à un cercle de traditeurs de la prophétie de jugement en Israël du Nord (cp. la représentation du »Dieu caché« en Gen. 20–22*). Auch ist Mose hier noch nicht als Gesetzgeber, sondern als Prophet, der Israel aus Ägypten führt (vgl. Hos 12,14), verstanden. Gen 22,1–14*.19 und Ex 20,18–21* sind daher nicht nachexilisch zu datieren, sondern gehen auf Tradentenkreise der nordisraelitischen Gerichtsprophetie (vgl. die Vorstellung von der Verborgenheit Gottes in Gen 20–22*) zurück.

Abstract: II Reg 17,24–41 contains two units, both coming from the Persian period. The first, vv. 24–34a, is characterized by Late Biblical Hebrew in the use of the periphrastic structure of verbs and the use of participles. The names of cities of origin for the new settlers are taken from II Kings 18,34; 19,13; Ezra 4,9, and the names of their gods are identifiable in one case only, Nergal of Kuthah: the others are spurious. The second unit, vv. 34b–40, was created on the basis of vv. 7–23 and II Kings 18; 19, and constitutes another critical evaluation of the northern populationof the Persian period. Both units are possibly anti-Samaritan polemics. Résumé: II Rois 17,24–41 comporte deux unités, datant toutes deux de l’époque perse. La première unité, vv. 24–34a, se rattache linguistiquement à l’hébreu biblique tardif, tant par son usage des formes verbales périphrastiques que par celui des participes définis. Les noms des cités d’origine sont empruntés à II Rois 18,34; 19,13 et Esdras 4,9, et les noms des divinités n’offrent qu’un cas identifiable, celui de Nergal de Kutha, les autres demeurant douteux. La seconde unité, vv. 34b–40, est basée sur les vv. 7–23 et II Rois 18; 19; elle constitue une critique de la population du Nord à l’époque perse, car elle a brisé l’alliance. Ces deux unités peuvent éventuellement témoigner d’une polémique anti-samaritaine. Zusammenfassung: II Reg 17,24–41 besteht aus zwei Einheiten, beide aus der persischen Zeit. Die erste Einheit, V. 24–34a, ist durch die periphrastische Struktur von Verben und die Benutzung von Partizipien mit finiter Bedeutung als spät hebräische Sprache gekennzeichnet. Die Namen der Herkunftsorte der nach Samarien Entführten stammen aus II Reg 18,34; 19,13 und Esr 4,9. Die Namen der Gottheiten sind nur in einem Fall, Nergal von Kutha, sicher identifizierbar, die anderen sind zweifelhaft und mit polemischer Absicht für den jetzigen Zusammenhang geschaffen. Die zweite Einheit, V. 34b–40, ist mit Elementen aus V. 7–23 und II Reg 18; 19 konstruiert und kritisiert die nördliche Bevölkerung dafür, dass sie den Bund gebrochen habe. Beide Einheiten sind möglicherweise anti-samaritanische Polemik.

Abstract: To the undiscerning eye, I Reg 22 depicts a malevolent deity who lures Israel’s king to his death. A more careful reading, however, shows that even though Yahweh employs deceit in this passage, he never intends Ahab to remain deceived. Rather, Yahweh discloses the truth to Ahab in stages: ambiguity, subtle insinuations, and finally straightforward prophecy – all of which are designed to elicit repentance. Ahab’s failure to repent is less a sign of divine punishment than it is of royal intransigence. The story’s narrative structure and its intertextual connections to I Reg 20 and Dtn 17 support these portraits of God and king. Une analyse plus précise montre cependant que Yhwh, même s’il se sert de la tromperie, n’a jamais l’intention d’induire Achab en erreur. Il lui révèle au contraire la vérité par étapes: ambiguïté, indications subtiles, et enfim prophétie univoque – toutes destinées à provoquer sa repentance. L’incapacité d’Achab à la repentance est moins le signe de la punition divine que celui de l’intransigeance royale. La structure narrative du récit, de même que ses connexions intertextuelles avec I Rois 20 et Deut. 17, corroborent ces représentations du Dieu et du roi. Zusammenfassung: Oberflächlich betrachtet, beschreibt I Reg 22 eine übelwollende Gottheit, die Israels König in eine tödliche Falle locken will. Eine sorgfältigere Analyse jedoch zeigt, dass Jhwh, auch wenn er sich in dieser Perikope der Täuschung bedient, zu keiner Zeit vorhat, Ahab im Irrtum zu belassen. Vielmehr eröffnet er ihm die Wahrheit schrittweise: Zweideutigkeit, subtile Andeutungen und schließlich zielgerichtete Prophetie − all das ist darauf gerichtet, ihn zur Umkehr zu bewegen. Ahabs Unfähigkeit zur Umkehr ist weniger ein Zeichen göttlicher Strafe als vielmehr von königlicher Sturheit. Sowohl die narrative Struktur der Erzählung als auch ihre intertextuellen Beziehungen zu I Reg 20 und Dtn 17unterstützen eine solche Charakterisierung von Gott und König.

Abstract: The tris legomenon אמילם appears as part of the repeated formula בשם יהוה כי אמילם in Ps 118,10–12. Ancient versions attest a number of differing translations of the term, prompting numerous textual emendations of MT. No consensus has emerged regarding the meaning of the term or any textual emendation. This essay revisits F. Delitzsch’s proposal for translating אמילם as »I cut them to pieces« in light of the iconography of disarticulation in the ancient Near East, a source of data that has not yet been considered in the discussion. The analysis shows how the psalmist’s foes are pictured as an integrated and indistinguishable whole ( כל גוים , v. 10), but then are literally dis-integrated through the power of the divine name. Methodologically, the analysis demonstrates how ancient Near Eastern iconography has the potential not only to elucidate psalmic imagery, but also to help solve complex lexicographical problems and text-critical issues that arise from conflicting ancient translations. Les versions anciennes attestent un nombre important de traductions du terme, ce qui a suscité de nombreuses émendations au texte massorétique. Aucun consensus n’a émergé, ni sur la signification du terme, ni sur l’émendation du texte. Cet article réexamine la proposition de F. Delitzsch de traduire אמילם par »je les taille en pièces« à la lumière de l’iconographie de la désarticulation dans le Proche-Orient ancien, une source de données qui n’a pas encore été considérée dans la discussion. L’analyse démontre que les ennemis du Psalmiste sont représentés comme une totalité intégrée et indifférenciée ( כל גוים , v. 10) mais sont ensuite désintégrés par le pouvoir du nom divin. En ce qui concerne la méthodologie, l’analyse démontre comment l’iconographie du Proche-Orient antique peut servir non seulement à élucider le langage imagé des Psaumes, mais aussi de résoudre des problèmes lexicographiques et textuels qui proviennent de lectures contradictoires dans les versions anciennes. Zusammenfassung: Das tris legomenon אמילם begegnet als Teil der sich wiederholenden Formel בשם יהוה כי אמילם in Ps 118,10–12. Antike Versionen bieten eine große Zahl unterschiedlicher Übersetzungen dieses Wortes, was zu einer Vielzahl von Emendationen des MT führte. Bislang konnte kein Konsens bezüglich der Bedeutung des Begriffs oder zugunsten einer bestimmten Emendation erreicht werden. Der vorliegende Artikel nimmt den Übersetzungsvorschlag F. Delitzschs für אמילם als »werd’ ich sie zerhauen« im Licht der Ikonographie der Disartikulation im alten Orient erneut auf – eine Quelle, die bis jetzt in der Diskussion nicht berücksichtigt wurde. Die Analyse zeigt, wie die Gegner des Psalmisten als integriertes und nicht zu unterscheidendes Ganzes vorgestellt werden ( ,כל גוים V. 10), aber dann durch die Kraft des göttlichen Namens buchstäblich des-integriert werden. Methodologisch demonstriert die Analyse, dass altorientalische Ikonographie nicht nur das Potenzial besitzt, die Bildsymbolik der Psalmen zu erhellen, sondern auch helfen kann, komplexe lexikographische Probleme und textkritische Schwierigkeiten, die sich aus widersprüchlichen antiken Versionen ergeben, zu lösen.

Abstract: The dependence of Proverbs 22,17–23,11 on the Egyptian Instruction of Amenemope has long been recognized. The present article traces the composition- process of this unit and argues that its author-editor worked by scrolling forward and back in the source papyrus, each time picking up material of interest to him and reshaping it in accordance with his own goals. Attention to this procedure gives insight into the meaning of the Proverbs passage, its internal structure, and its message, which in the end is a religious one. Résumé: La dépendance littéraire de Prov. 22,17 – 23,11 par rapport à la Sagesse égyptienne d’Amenemopé a été reconnue de longue date. La présente étude retrace le processus de composition de cette unité, relevant notamment le fait que l’auteur-éditeur travaillait en déroulant son papyrus-source en avant et en arrière; il sélectionnait ainsi les données qui l’intéressaient et les formulait à frais nouveaux selon ses propres centres d’intérêt. Ce constat permet de mieux comprendre la signification de ce passage des Proverbes, sa structure interne et son message, qui en dernier ressort est religieux. Zusammenfassung: Dass Prov 22,17–23,11 die ägyptische Lehre des Amenemope voraussetzt, ist seit langem bekannt. Der vorliegende Beitrag verfolgt den Entstehungsprozess dieses Abschnittes und plädiert dafür, dass der Autor-Redaktor seinen Quellen-Papyrus vor- und zurückrollte und jedes Mal das ihn interessierende Material herauszog und in Übereinstimmung mit seinen eigenen Zielen neu formulierte. Die Beachtung dieses Vorgangs gibt einen Einblick in die Bedeutung des Abschnittes in Proverbien, seine innere Struktur und seine Botschaft, die letztlich eine religiöse ist.

Abstract: This article discusses the meaning of Koh 1,4 and its implications for the structure and meaning of the prologue of the book. It is argued that modern interpretations of Koh 1,4 have failed to understand the connection between the two statements »generation goes, generation comes« and »the earth remains forever«. Consequently, the overall structure of the prologue was misunderstood. The article points alternatively to a hitherto unnoticed Medieval Jewish interpretive tradition, which sheds new light on the connection between the succession of generations and the permanence of earth. Accordingly, a fresh reading ofQohelet’s prologue is suggested, which stresses its poetic symmetry and integrity. Résumé: Cette étude concerne la signification de Qohélèt 1,4 et ses implications quant à la structure et la signification du prologue du livre. On constate que l’interprétation récente n’y a pas reconnu la relation entre les deux propositions: »Une génération s’en va, une génération vient« et »la terre subsiste toujours«. De ce fait, toute la structure du prologue est mal comprise. L’étude renvoie à une tradition juive médiévale, méconnue jusqu’ici, qui jette une lumière nouvelle sur la connexion entre ces deux thèmes. Cette nouvelle lecture de Qohélèt en dégaela symétrie et l’intégrité poétiques. Zusammenfassung: Dieser Beitrag diskutiert die Bedeutung von Koh 1,4 und dessen Implikationen für die Struktur und die Bedeutung des Buchprologs. Es sei den modernen Interpretationen von Koh 1,4 nicht gelungen, die Verbindung zwischen den beiden Feststellungen »eine Generation geht, eine Generation kommt« und »die Erde besteht auf ewig« zu verstehen. Infolgedessen wurde die Struktur des ganzen Prologs missverstanden. Dem wird eine bisher nicht beachtetete mittelalterliche jüdische Auslegungstradition gegenübergestellt, die neues Licht auf die Verbindung zwischen der Abfolge der Generationen und der Dauerhaftigkeit der Erde wirft. Dementsprechend wird eine neue Lesung des Kohelet-Prologsvorgeschlagen, die dessen poetische Symmetrie und literarische Integrität unterstreicht.

Abstract: The article investigates the meaning of the phrase ויכרה להם כרה גדולה in II Reg 6,23. An alternative sense is suggested for the Hebrew root כר“ה in this passage, Akkadian, Aramaic, and rabbinic Hebrew attesting the noun as signifying a »pile«, and accordingly the denominative verb meaning »heaping up«. It adduces Neo-Assyrian passages in which the »heaped stocks« also serve as a way of paying homage in military contexts, and two further Neo-Assyrian texts resembling the biblical account in both content and context shedding further light on the political connotation of feeding captives – namely, as a symbol of their subordination. Résumé: Cette étude est consacrée à la signification de l’expression ויכרה להם כרה גדולה en II Rois 6,23. Un sens alternatif est proposé pour la racine כר“ה dans ce passage, correspondant à l’akkadien, l’araméen et l’hébreu rabbinique, au sens de »tas«, ainsi que le verbe dénominatif »entasser« correspondant. Dans les textes néo-assyriens, l’expression »ustensiles entassés« désigne une forme de rémunération en contexte militaire; deux autres textes assyriens, qui rappellent le texte biblique par le contenu et le contexte, illustrent cet aspect politique du traitement des prisonniers, en symbole de soumission. Zusammenfassung: Dieser Artikel untersucht die Bedeutung der Wendung ויכרה להם כרה גדולה in II Reg 6,23. Für die hebräische Wurzel כר“ה wird in diesem Abschnitt eine alternative Bedeutung vorgeschlagen entsprechend dem Akkadischen, Aramäischen und rabbinischem Hebräisch, wo das Nomen als »Haufen« und das denominative Verb als »anhäufen« belegt sind. In neuassyrischen Texten dienen die »angehäuften Vorräte« als eine Art Entlohnung im militärischen Bereich; zwei weitere assyrische Texte, die in Inhalt und Kontext dem biblischen Text ähneln, beleuchten den politischen Aspekt der Gefangenenversorgung, insbesondere als ein Symbol der Unterordnung.

Abstract: It is being proposed in this study that the word חיים , in the phrase חיים וחסד , belongs to the preceding verse, where תְּשׂכְכֵנִי should be emended to תַּשְׁכֵּנְנִי , »make dwell in me«. Moreover, v. 12a should be understood negatively, as a rhetorical question that casts doubt on the benefit of being born. These emendations resolve the difficulties with the phrase חיים וחסד , and result in cogent texts for both vv. 11 and 12. Résumé: On propose ici d’attribuer le terme חיים , dans la phrase חיים וחסד , au verset précédent où תְּשׂכְכֵנִי doit être émendé en תַּשְׁכֵּנְנִי – »habite en moi«. De plus, le v. 12a est une question rhétorique à réponse négative, s’interrogeant sur le bénéfice de la naissance. Ces corrections résolvent les difficultés de l’expression חיים וחסד et harmonisent le texte des vv. 11 et 12. Zusammenfassung: Es wird in dieser Studie vorgeschlagen, dass das Wort חיים in der Phrase חיים וחסד zu dem vorhergehenden Vers gehört, wo תְּשׂכְכֵנִי in תַּשְׁכֵּנְנִי »lass in mir wohnen« emendiert werden sollte. Darüber hinaus ist V. 12a als rhetorische Frage, die Zweifel am Nutzen des Geborenseins aufwirft, negativ zu verstehen. Diese Emendationen lösen die Schwierigkeiten mit der Wendung חיים וחסד und führen zu überzeugenden Texten sowohl in V. 11 als auch in V. 12.

Abstract: This note takes a new look at the LXX rendering of Job 20,25, and proposes to explain the translational divergence on the basis of the translation technique of LXX Job. Résumé: Cette contribution porte un regard nouveau sur la lecture de Job 20,25 LXX et tente d’en expliquer les divergences de traduction par rapport aux techniques de traduction de la Septante en Job. Zusammenfassung: Diese Mitteilung wirft einen neuen Blick auf die LXX-Lesart von Hiob 20,25 und versucht, die Abweichung der Übersetzung mit der Übersetzungstechnik der Hiob-Septuaginta zu erklären.
