The use of plastic parts in the production of automobiles has a long and established history. In the more recent past, manufacturers have become interested in bio-based materials for a variety of parts, in part because they represent a more sustainable material stream, and in part because they may be more economically feasible. This chapter discusses the evolution from fossil fuel-based materials to bio-based materials in their established and potential uses for automotive parts.

Hexagonal manganites belong to an exciting class of materials exhibiting strong interactions between a highly frustrated magnetic system, the ferroelectric polarization, and the lattice. The existence and mutual interaction of different magnetic ions (Mn and rare earth) results in complex magnetic phase diagrams and novel physical phenomena. A summary and discussion of the various properties, underlying physical mechanisms, the role of the rare earth ions, and the complex interactions in multiferroic hexagonal manganites are presented in this review.

Over the last decade, visible light photocatalysis has dramatically increased the arsenal of methods for organic synthesis and changed the way we activate molecules for chemical reactions. Polypyridyl transition metal complexes, redox-active organic dyes, and inorganic semiconductors are typically used as photocatalysts for such transformations. This chapter reviews the applications of radical anions and anions as photosensitizers in visible light photoredox catalysis.

The discovery of a drug is known to be quite cumbersome, both in terms of the microscopic fundamental research behind it and the industrial scale manufacturing process. A major concern in drug discovery is the acceleration of the process and cost reduction. The fact that clinical trials cannot be accelerated, therefore, emphasizes the need to accelerate the strategies for identifying lead compounds at an early stage. We, herein, focus on the definition of what would be regarded as a “drug-like” molecule and a “lead-like” one. In particular, “drug-likeness” is referred to as resemblance to existing drugs, whereas “lead-likeness” is characterized by the similarity with structural and physicochemical properties of a “lead”compound, i.e. a reference compound or a starting point for further drug development. It is now well known that a huge proportion of the drug discovery is inspired or derived from natural products (NPs), which have larger complexity as well as size when compared with synthetic compounds. Therefore, similar definitions of “drug-likeness” and “lead-likeness” cannot be applied for the NP-likeness. Rather, there is the dire need to define and explain NP-likeness in regard to chemical structure. An attempt has been made here to give an overview of the general concepts associated with NP discovery, and to provide the foundational basis for defining a molecule as a “drug”, a “lead” or a “natural compound.”

Secondary metabolites, commonly referred to as natural products, are produced by living organisms and usually have pharmacological or biological activities. Secondary metabolites are the primary source for the discovery of new drugs. Furthermore, secondary metabolites are also used as food preservatives, biopesticides or as research tools. Although secondary metabolites are mainly used by their beneficial biological activity, the toxicity of some of them may limit their use. The toxicity assessment of any compound that is prone to be used in direct contact with human beings is of vital importance. There is a vast spectrum of experimental methods for toxicity evaluation, including in vitro and in vivo methodologies. In this work, we present an overview of the different sources, bioactivities, toxicities and chemical classification of secondary metabolites, followed by a sketch of the role of toxicity assessment in drug discovery and agrochemistry.
