The subjects of the Late Neolithic cave paintings in İnkaya Cave, Balıkesir are life and death. It is seen that the panels representing Life are based on the formation of a fetus inside a pregnant woman’s abdomen, its development then birth, and the celebration of a new individual joining the community, alongside an emphasis on the shaman’s function throughout this process. Similar subjects in the Neolithic Age in Anatolia are presented to the viewer from different perspectives in cave paintings, reliefs and figurines showing scenes that depict sexuality, pregnant women, and childbirth. The successful use of the “X-ray” style in the creation of the İnkaya Cave painting in the Neolithic period fills a gap in the history of Anatolian painting and sculpture.

One of the few areas of the central North European Plain with settlement structures of the Single Grave groups (SG) as well as the Bell Beaker (BB) phenomenon is the Dümmer region in northwestern Germany. This region is characterised by extensive wetlands on the southern border of the Northern Lowland and has been subject of several research projects on Mesolithic and Neolithic sites since the last century. Archaeological prospections in the 1940s led to the detection of a domestic site of the BB groups at the Hunte 4 site. In 2020, new research was carried out at this site, which, through the integration of archaeology, geophysics and palynology, identified a Late SG and BB site and reconstructed the surrounding landscape. In contrast to the Hunte 1 settlement with building structures 2.5 km to the south, which also shows SG and BB activities, the results of the investigations at Hunte 4 point to a temporary use of the site. Consequently, a settlement system can be reconstructed in the region of the Dümmer for the second half of the third millennium and at the beginning of the second millennium BCE, which consisted of at least one permanent settlement and at the minimum one temporarily used sites – several more could be presumed but have to yet be localised. At the same time, the Dümmer region marks the southern border of a settlement system in the central Northern European Plain which is characterised by less domestic site, less permanent settlement sites and buildings structures. This contrasts with the increasing number of known settlement sites in the surrounding regions of the central Northern European Plain and suggests a higher translocality of individuals and groups in this area.

Representing the choices of Egyptologists like Brugsch and Newberry in addition to Major Myers, the Eton-Myers collection is stunningly sophisticated for the time of its assembling. It includes 14 pots and sherds of black-topped ware, a hallmark of the early Predynastic Period in Egypt. Despite their attractive shapes and decorative effects, the pots of this type belonging to the collection remain unstudied. Like most black-topped pots in museum collections today, they lack provenience or any other information about their precise dating. Therefore, this paper studied five black-topped vessels from the Eton-Myers collection by analyzing their attributes. The paper identified their forms and dating based on Petrie and later revisions by Kaiser and Hendrickx. The vessels that have the numbers ECM 844, 1226, 1211, 1210, and 1225 were dated to Naqada Ib, NIb, NIc-IIa, NIIb-c, NIIb-d1 respectively. Since the main aim of attribute analysis is to reconstruct the cultural context in which pottery was made, this study described the conditions of the periods the pots were dated to. Additionally, this study was able to show the conditions of the periods that were reflected in the features of the black-topped pots part of the Eton-Myers collection. For instance, a general tendency towards replacing open forms with restricted shapes could be explained by the rise of trade. Hence, pottery attributes can be used to date and reconstruct the general context of unprovenienced black-topped pottery from the Eton-Myers collection. A pot’s function, on the other hand, may be confirmed by its form and residue-analysis. This paper calls for the application of the latter archaeometrical approach, which represents the most recent phase of the development of pottery studies, to further enhance our understanding of the contents traded in black-topped pottery between Egypt and its neighbors towards the end of its prehistory.

Animal burials are very common in the ancient world; the practice was widespread and had different meanings, ranging from offerings to the deceased to ritual banquets. Archaeology can only partially reconstruct the multitude of symbols connected with human burials associated with the interment of animals. In Armenia, and more generally in the Southern Caucasus, between the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC, during the protohistoric period known as the Middle Bronze Age, the burials were by typically covered by a mound, locally known as a kurgan. One of the most significant features of the deposition is the presence of numerous wild and domestic animals. This paper analyses the interment of animals from a symbolic perspective and puts forward hypotheses regarding their role in human burial customs.

The study discusses a bronze hoard well-known through Europe from Hajdúböszörmény-Csege-halom (Hajdú-Bihar County, Hungary) which consists of weapons and a bronze vessel set. On one hand, the aim of the study is to introduce the newest results related to this unique eponymous find. On the other hand, it analyses the assemblage in a European context, characterize and interpret its supra-regional connections based on the composition and depositional features of the hoard based on conventional typo-chronology and correspondence analysis.

The multi-stratified site of Túrkeve-Terehalom presents an exceptional opportunity to establish the start and the end of the Middle Bronze Age in the Eastern Carpathian Basin and to refine its inner chronology. The chronological potential of the site rests on the meticulous excavation campaigns over a decade. This potential has been harvested by linking stratified finds, particularly pottery, to narrow, calibrated age-ranges. The result has implications for local chronology while also prompting questions about how to synchronise long-range connectivity with central and northern Europe and the Aegean, as well. The resulting chronological model for Túrkeve-Terehalom firstly challenges prevailing chronological views regarding the life-spans of Bronze Age structures with beaten clay floors, secondly the direction of the wave of destruction and/or abandonment of multi-stratified sites in the Carpathian Basin, and thirdly the continental networking during the Middle Bronze Age.

Zusammenfassung Verschiedene Funde lassen spätestens ab der Frühbronzezeit Kontakte zwischen dem Kaukasus und dem Vorderen Orient erwarten Smith 2015; Ivanova 2012; Boehmer/Kossack 2000. . Dem Zentral- und Südkaukasus kommt dabei aufgrund seines Rohstoffreichtums eine besondere Rolle zu. Der Bedarf an Metallen, Obsidian u. a. regte in der Bronzezeit weitreichenden Handel an, der bislang jedoch noch nicht ausreichend Gegenstand der Forschung war. Vorangegangene Untersuchungen zeigten bereits für die Bronzezeit im Zentralkaukasus eine Herausbildung von komplexen Gesellschaften mit strukturierten Siedlungen Sagona 2018. , die sich am Beispiel der Forschungen in Armenien besonders im Bereich nahegelegener mineralischer Ressourcen, wie z. B. von Gold, Kupfererz und Obsidian, gruppieren Kunze et al. 2011; 2013. . Der derzeitige Forschungsstand in Georgien, insbesondere in Ostgeorgien, erlaubt eine ähnliche Aussage noch nicht und stellt vor allem für den Bereich des östlichen (Zentral-)Kaukasus ein Forschungsdesiderat dar. Die Verteilung bronzezeitlicher Fundstellen in Georgien wird bereits weitgehend in der Literatur diskutiert Lordkipanidze 1991; Gambaschidze et al. 2001. . Wie auch in Armenien befinden sich in Ostgeorgien zahlreiche bronzezeitliche Siedlungen von zum Teil mächtiger Ausdehnung. Darüber hinaus indizieren unter anderem komplexe Anlagen aus der Spätbronze-/Früheisenzeit, die als Heiligtümer angesprochen werden Bukhrashvili et al. 2020; Pizchelauri 1984. und keine direkten Siedlungsschichten beinhalten, dass sich auch in Ostgeorgien nach dem Ende der Mittelbronzezeit gesellschaftliche Veränderungen abzeichnen. Die Heiligtümer sind verbunden mit Massenniederlegungen von Metallobjekten, die mehrere hundert Einzelobjekte umfassen können Davitashvili et al. 2021; Bukhrashvili et al. 2019; 2020; Pizchelauri 1984. . Ziel einer von der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung (Az. 20.20.0.048AA) geförderten Regionalstudie zur Metallnutzung und -verarbeitung war es daher, die bereits begonnene Untersuchung der Metalldistribution auf eine breitere Basis zu stellen. Zur Verfügung standen Metallobjekte aus einem aktuell laufenden Forschungsprojekt Davitashvili et al. 2021; Bukhrashvili et al. 2019; 2020; 2022. , so dass erstmals in der Region umfangreiche Probenserien an gut datierbaren Befunden genommen und geochemisch charakterisiert werden konnten. Sie versprechen sowohl aufgrund ihrer Stratigrafie als auch 14 C-Datierungen grundlegende Erkenntnisse zur chronologischen Entwicklung der Metalldistribution und Indizien zur Herkunft des benötigten Erzes.

Three sites from network of 27 structures of the Late Bronze/Early Iron Age Lusatian culture from NE Poland (Biebrza and Narew river basins) and man-environment interaction were study. These circular structures have a relatively uniform location, structure, type of construction and dimension. Two areas within these structure coud be distinguished: a protective area consisting of a system of ditches and embankments and a central area consisting of a flat central square with only some archaeological traces of economic activity. Determining the function of the structures is extremely difficult. Their structure does not indicate the defensive function of the objects. Their location near peat bogs may suggest their use as corals for grazing animals and intensive agricultural use of the environment are reflected in the valley bottom sediments. There are many indications that we are dealing here rather with a kind of stable socio-administrative-religious centre concentrating dispersed in the microregion population of the Lusatian culture.

For centuries the Homeric epics, especially the Iliad, have fascinated and attracted the attention of the academic community and the wider public alike. Many scholars throughout the centuries endeavored to prove the historicity of the Iliad through the archaeological evidence. Though current academic research has long departed from those approaches, the epics contain important historical and cultural elements that were part of the reality not only of Homer’s contemporary (Iron Age) society but also, to an extent, of the Late Bronze Age. This paper argues that the Homeric funerary customs are not a purely literary creation, but rather the result of a mixture of traditions, contemporary customs and collective memory. This will be achieved through a survey of archaeological and written evidence pertaining to Late Bronze Age and Iron Age burial traditions, ranging from Hittite Anatolia to Central Europe, and in doing so suggest the possible origins, both geographically and chronologically, of ‘Homeric’ mortuary practices.

Archaeological research at Aalst – Siesegemkouter revealed several pits within a Middle to Late Bronze Age settlement. Most of them hardly contained any artefacts, but one exception showed a structured stratigraphy with an abundance of finds, including a large amount of shattered pottery, charcoal and calcined animal bone. The study of this assemblage, and comparison with two other pits showing similarities, provides strong indications of a closing deposit or another type of ‘site maintenance practice’. In the Low Countries, comparable contexts generally date from the Iron Age, suggesting that the finds from Aalst – Siesegemkouter represent early forerunners of this ritual practice. On top of this early date, the large volume of cremated animal bone represents an almost unique characteristic for which, until now, parallels from the Metal Ages have hardly been found, even on a Northwestern European scale. In general, the role played by organic remains in ritual contexts from these periods and regions is poorly understood, often due to bad preservation conditions or the lack of a multidisciplinary approach.

Zusammenfassung Am 8. Februar 2014 wurde an einer beim Pflügen zerstörten Stelle im Katastergebiet von Stíčany in dem Bezirk Chrudim eine Ansammlung von Bronzeartefakten und Bernsteinperlen entdeckt, ein Fund, der unsere Vorstellungen zum erreichten Kenntnisstand der Hallstattzeitforschung in Böhmen korrigiert. Die bisherige Erfahrung deutete darauf hin, dass die entsprechende Quellenbasis bereits soweit erschlossen war, dass die einzelnen lokalen Kultureinheiten nicht nur räumlich, sondern auch dinglich und inhaltlich zuverlässig bestimmt werden konnten, und dass eine detaillierte Verwandtschaft gegeben war. Zur einfachen Einordnung von Funden stand eine Chronologie zur Verfügung. Während neu erworbene Funde diese Vorstellung typischerweise bestätigten, widerspricht der hallstattzeitliche Hort, dem dieser Artikel gewidmet ist, deutlich. Immerhin handelt es sich hier um den ersten wirklich unbestreitbaren Hortfund aus der Hallstattzeit in Böhmen. Auf den ersten Blick ist diese Assemblage einzigartig, nicht nur wegen ihres Solitärcharakters und weil ihre Zusammensetzung die gegenwärtige Vorstellung artefaktischer Kompositionen in der tschechischen Schlesisch-Platěnicer Kultur der Hallstattzeit erheblich verändert, sondern vor allem, weil sie neue Erkenntnisse über kulturelle Zusammenhänge nach sich zieht. Es entsteht nun die Möglichkeit, neue Interpretationen zur Funktionsweise der Gesellschaft am Übergang von der jüngeren zur späten Hallstattzeit und über interkulturelle Beziehungen dieser Zeit im breiteren europäischen Raum zu wagen.

In its early Iron Age heyday, amber items were in widespread use all along the Amber Road. The amount, type and deposition patterns of the amber accessories varied between the particular traditions, reaching lavish standards in some of the Hallstatt graves. As the disintegration of the Hallstatt communities north of the Sudetes disrupted the connection between the Baltic coast societies and the La Tène civilisation in the south, the early La Tène period saw a dramatic decline in the amber exchange and a significant decrease in the amount of amber deposited in archaeological contexts. While in the north the amber gradually fell into disfavour, the La Tène civilisation had never abandoned it. At the same time, its deposition contexts, distribution and symbolic load seem to have changed over time.

Zusammenfassung In den Jahren 2020–2021 wurde bei Buzovycja (Ukraine, Černivci Gebiet) ein Fundplatz klar römischen Ursprungs entdeckt. Erste Feldforschungen im Jahr 2020 ließen bereits die Existenz von Gebäuden vermuten, die nach römischer Bautradition errichtet wurden. Auf der Geländeoberfläche zeichneten sich an mehreren Stellen spezifische architektonische Überreste ab. Solche Anhäufungen enthielten neben den üblichen Funden der Černjachiv-Kultur auch Ziegelstein-, Mörtel- und Steinfragmente. Nach den Ergebnissen einer 2021 durchgeführten geomagnetischen Messung wurde für Probegrabungen eine vielversprechende Anomalie im zentralen Teil der Siedlungsstelle ausgewählt. Die Hauptaufgabe dann erfolgten archäologischen Ausgrabungen bestand darin, den architektonischen Typ des Objekts zu bestimmen und diesen zu datieren. Die Ausgrabung brachte einen Gebäudebereich zu Tage, der aus Ziegeln, Steinen und Kalkmörtel errichtet wurde. Die Breite des Gebäudes betrug ca. 9,3 m, die mögliche Länge kann auf ca. 20 m geschätzt werden. Der freigelegte Gebäudeboden befand sich 1,4 m tief unter dem heutigen Oberflächenniveau und bestand aus mit Kalkstein angereichertem wasserdichtem Estrichmörtel. Im Nordteil des Gebäudes konnten auf dem Betonboden drei runde Ziegelsteine entdeckt werden, von denen eine an Ort und Stelle fixiert wurde. Stellenweise fanden sich komplette Ziegelblöcke, die bis zu vier Lagen zählten und mittels Kalkmörtel verbunden waren. Im Gebäude konnten eine Reihe von Funden geborgen werden. Dazu zählte Černjachiv-Keramik, Forlimpopoli-Amphoren, Amphorenständer, Glasperlen, eine Eisenkette und weitere Objekte mehr. Die Analyse der Funde und der Gebäudereste erbrachte, dass das Gebäude in spätrömische Zeit datiert (3.– Mitte 5. Jahrhundert n. Chr.). Die geborgenen Reste der Baukeramik und der Mörtel weisen darauf hin, dass es in römischer Architekturtradition errichtet wurde. Das Vorhandensein rechteckiger und runder Ziegelblöcke in einer Zerstörungsschicht deuten darauf hin, dass das Gebäude ein Hypocaustum hatte. Die sonstigen archäologischen Funde aus der Fundstelle Buzovycja-1 gehören hauptsächlich zur Černjachiv-Kultur. Gedeutet wird der Gesamtbefund nach gegenwärtigem Untersuchungsstand als einheimische Siedlung mit in diesem errichteten Gebäude in römischer Bautradition.

Zusammenfassung Zwischen 1942 und 1944 wurden die wertvollsten Teile der Sammlung des Pommerschen Landesmuseums Stettin aus Furcht vor Bombardements und dem Verlust von Kulturgütern in ausgewählte Auslagerungsorte evakuiert und in die Obhut von vertrauenswürdigen Personen, hauptsächlich Vertretern bekannter pommerscher Grundbesitzer, belassen. Einer dieser Auslagerungsorte war das Gut Moltow (heute Mołtowo). Die nach Moltow evakuierten Funde waren zwischen den späten 1940er und frühen 1970er Jahren unter unbekannten Umständen aus dem Gutshaus entfernt worden. Sie beweisen, dass diese nach Kriegsende zumindest für einige Jahre an dem Ort, an dem sie vor 1945 deponiert wurden, in gutem Zustand erhalten geblieben und in den folgenden Jahren verstreut und teilweise zerstört sein dürften. Im Jahr 2016 wurden in Moltowo im Bereich einer als Müllhalde genutzten Sandgrube zufällig Funde entdeckt, die Inventarnummern des Pommerschen Landesmuseums tragen. Sie wurden von Mitarbeitern des Muzeum Narodowe Szczecin und des Polnischen Waffenmuseums in Kołobrzeg fachgerecht geborgen. Zu diesen zählen auch Funde aus drei älterkaiserzeitlichen Fürstengräbern von Lübsow (Lubieszewo). Sie werden hier vorgestellt und beschrieben und bilden eine Ergänzung zur 2010 vorgelegten Monografie zu den Gräbern von Lübsow.

During an archaeological rescue excavation in center of city Olomouc (Moravia region, Czech Republic) several graves were found. Those graves were a part of a defunct cemetery situated in the area surrounding a church of St. Peter and Paul. The research was focused on analysis of 13 children’s skull samples affected by a chronical pathology known as “ cribra orbitalia ” (CO). X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used to examine differences in the samples with respect to an individual’s age, degree of porosity (representing the progress of CO) and other observed pathologies. Both techniques proved that the ratio of calcium to iron gradually increases with the age of the child without regard to the degree of CO damage. Moreover, the ICP-MS data were evaluated using principal component analysis, which pointed out that the highest contents of Pb were found in samples from individuals suffering from rickets. The preliminary results reveal that more research on this pathology should be performed – not only for post-medieval individuals but also in prehistorical ones.
