Metallographische Gefügeuntersuchungen an Randleistenbeilen des Sächsischen Typs und solchen des Typs Langquaid zeigen, daß im Verlauf der Frühbronzezeit eine Vereinheitlichung der Schmiedetechnik auftritt. Diese ist nicht allein auf die regelhafte Verwendung hochprozentiger Zinnbronze ab der entwickelten Frühbronzezeit zurückzuführen. Vielmehr faßt man eine Stabilisierung der Herstellungsprozesse insgesamt, eine Angleichung metallurgischen Wissens und eine intensivere, überregionale Kommunikation. Ausgehend von diesem Befund wird nach handwerklicher Spezialisierung und der gesellschaftlichen Einbettung frühbronzezeitlicher Metallurgie gefragt. Indem wir Metallobjekte als Prestigegüter betrachten, deren Herstellung und Verwendung von einer entstehenden Oberschicht kontrolliert wurde, überschätzen wir das Organisationsniveau des frühbronzezeitlichen Metallhandwerks und die soziale Differenzierung der entsprechenden Gesellschaften. Denn im Siedlungs- und Bestattungswesen der Frühbronzezeit fehlen weitgehend die Belege für die Existenz stabiler gesellschaftlicher Hierarchien. Zu fragen ist also, wie die Zinnbronze auf einem eher niedrigen gesellschaftlichen Organisationsniveau allgemeine Akzeptanz finden und sich mit den Beilen des Typs Langquaid zudem eine deutliche Stabilisierung der Schmiedetechnik einstellen konnte. Unter Rückgriff auf ethnographische Analogien wird vorgeschlagen, daß Abstammungsgruppen als grundlegende Organisationseinheit vorstaatlicher Bevölkerungen auch für die Vermittlung und Angleichung metallurgischen Wissens entscheidende Bedeutung zukam. Abstract Des analyses structurales métallographiques effectuées sur des haches à rebords de type saxon et de type Langquaid révèlent une standardisation des techniques de forgeage au cours du Bronze ancien. Celle-ci n'est pas due uniquement à l'utilisation régulière de bronze à très forte teneur en étain dès la maturité du Bronze ancien. On constate plutôt une stabilisation des procédés de fabrication, une harmonisation des connaissances en métallurgie et une intensification des communications entre les régions. A partir de ce contexte se pose la question de la spécialisation artisanale et de l'intégration de la métallurgie dans la société du Bronze ancien. En considérant les objets métalliques comme des biens de prestige, dont la fabrication et l'usage étaient contrôlés par une classe dirigeante, nous surestimons le niveau d'organisation des artisans du métal et la complexité de ces sociétés. En effet, les habitats et les tombes du Bronze ancien ne prouvent toujours pas l'existence de hiérarchies sociales stables. La question est donc de savoir comment le bronze à forte teneur en étain a été accepté à un niveau d'organisation sociale plutôt simple et comment les haches de type Langquaid ont entraîné une stabilisation significative des techniques de forgeage. On propose, en se référant à l'analogie ethnographique, que les groupes de descendants, en tant qu'unité fondamentale d'organisation de populations préétatiques, jouèrent un rôle décisif dans la diffusion et l'harmonisation des connaissances en métallurgie. Abstract Metallographic analyses show that during the Early Bronze Age of the Northalpine region of Central Europe existed distinct traditions of early metallurgy. With flanged axes of the Saxon type, for example, we witness a certain instability and transformation of metallurgical knowledge related to the spread of tin bronze. This only comes to an end with the Langquaid axes (BA A2), which show a standardization of cold-working and stabilisation of manufacturing processes in general. Seen in a wider context this finding confirms the well-established conclusion that the actual transition to the age of metal takes place in BA A2. Furthermore it is supposed that during this period metallurgy had considerable societal impact and led to the formation of new elites. From this perspective our results – a standardization of metallurgical knowledge in BA A2 – would imply centralization of production processes and increasing control of elites over specialised metalworkers, the practice of metallurgy, access to copper and tin and the distribution of metal objects. However, a closer look at burials, settlements and what little evidence remains of metallurgical workshops implies that the socio-economic importance of EBA metallurgy, craft specialization and social hierarchies might be generally overestimated. By drawing on ethnographic data an alternative model is therefore presented, which accounts for a more intensive participation of local producers in cross-regional communication. It is proposed that largely without elite control a kinship-based organisation of EBA metallworking allowed the spread and standardization of metallurgical knowledge evident in the metallographic data.

Die in Vorberichten schon mehrmals vorgelegte befestigte Siedlung aus der entwickelten Früh- und Mittelbronzezeit von Monkodonja bei Rovinj in Istrien stellt uns vor manche Probleme der Datierung. Einerseits ist klar, daß die Nutzungsdauer der wiederholt ausgebauten Befestigungsanlage in dem Akropolis genannten Kernbereich und auch der Erweiterungsbauten an den beiden Haupttoren und der Umfassungsmauer einen längeren Zeitraum gewährt hat. Andererseits stützt sich ihre archäologische Einordnung nur auf wenige Bronzefunde und signifikante Keramik. Die zahlreiche, aber zumeist sehr bruchstückhaft überlieferte Keramik ist in ihrer ausgesprochen lokalen Formgebung für eine engmaschige zeitliche Einordnung ebenfalls nicht besonders hilfreich. So wurde eine Serie von 21 14 C-Datierungen im Kieler Leibniz-Labor für Altersbestimmung angefertigt, durch die ein Bild der sich im Laufe einiger Ausbaumaßnahmen wandelnden Befestigungsanlage und ihrer Bebauung hinter den Mauern gewonnen werden konnte. Alle Datenproben für die AMS-Messungen wurden an tierischen und menschlichen Knochen vorgenommen. Weitere Messungen werden folgen, da auch nach Vorlage der Datenserie noch manche Frage offen ist. Eine erste, durch eine Messung dokumentierte Begehung des Hügels, die keine Siedlungsspuren hinterlassen hat, fand in der Mitte des 3. vorchristlichen Jahrtausends statt. Die Akropolismauer wurde vor 1800 v. Chr. errichtet, ihre Ausbauphasen reichen bis an das Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts. Die Außenbefestigung dürfte eine bis zwei Generationen später fertig gewesen sein. Ihre kasemattenartigen Anbauten waren bis um oder nach 1200 v. Chr. in Benutzung. Die Gräber im Bereich des Westtors dürften in der Zeit des frühesten Ausbaus der Siedlung auf dem Berg angelegt und erst später in das Befestigungssystem einbezogen worden sein. Letzte Begehungen des zentralen Siedlungsbereichs stammen aus der Zeit um 1000 v. Chr. Abstract Déjà présenté dans plusieurs rapports préliminaires, l'habitat fortifié de Monkodonja près de Rovinj en Istrie, qui date d'un Bronze ancien déjà avancé et du Bronze moyen, pose des problèmes de datation. D'un côté, il est clair que l'occupation de la fortification, élargie à plusieurs reprises dans la zone centrale appelée „acropole“, et des constructions annexes aux deux portes principales et contre le rempart a duré un certain temps; de l'autre, leur classification archéologique ne repose que sur quelques trouvailles en bronze. Vu sa morphologie locale, la céramique abondante, mais généralement très fragmentée, ne se prête pas particulièrement à une fixation chronologique précise. Une série de 21 dates 14 C a ainsi été réalisée au Leibniz-Labor de Kiel qui donnent une idée des modifications apportées à la fortification et aux constructions aménagées derrière le rempart. Tous les échantillons pour les mesures AMS furent prélevés sur des os d'animaux et d'humains. D'autres mesures vont suivre, car bien des questions restent encore en suspens après la présentation de cette série de dates. Une première occupation de la colline établie par une datation, mais qui n'a pas laissé de traces, a eu lieu au milieu du 3 e millénaire av. J.-C. Le mur de l'acropole a été érigé avant 1800 av. J.-C. et les phases de construction s'y succèdent jusqu'à la fin du 15 e siècle. Le rempart extérieur a dû être achevé une à deux générations plus tard. Ses constructions annexes en casemates furent occupées jusques vers ou après 1200 av. J.-C. Les tombes situées à proximité de la porte ouest ont dû être aménagées à l'époque de la première implantation sur la hauteur et ne furent intégrées dans les fortifications que plus tard. Les dernières traces d'occupation dans la zone centrale de l'habitat datent d'environ 1000 av. J.-C. Abstract The enclosed settlement from the developed Early and Middle Bronze Age of Monkodonja near Rovinj in Istria has been the subject of previous reports and poses a number of dating problems. On the one hand, it is clear the repeatedly rebuilt expanded enclosure in the core area called the acropolis, as well as the massive masonry at both main gates and at the enclosing wall, had a long usage life. On the other hand, their archaeological classification rests on just a few bronze finds and significant ceramics. The numerous, but mostly very fragmented, pottery finds have a distinctively local form and are not particularly helpful in narrowing down the chronological time frame. For this reason, a series of 21 14 C-datings was performed in the Leibniz Laboratory for Age Determination in Kiel, Germany. With this data, a picture could be gained of the enclosure as it changed over the course of several rebuilding and construction phases behind the walls. All data samples for the AMS measurements were carried out on animal and human bones. Further measurements will follow, because even after the presentation of these data, a few questions remain open. According to the measurements, the hill was first used in the middle of the 3rd millennium BC, although no traces of settlement were left behind. The acropolis wall was built before 1800 BC, and was rebuilt in phases reaching into the end of the 15th century. The outer enclosure was finished one or two generations later. Its case-mate-type extensions were in use up to or after 1200 BC. The graves in the area of the west gate date to the time of the foundation of the settlement on the hill, and became part of the enclosure only at a later date. The last uses of the central settlement area date back to the time around 1000 BC.

Im Tal der Großmorava, wo bisher etwa zehn Silbergürtel vom Typ Mramorac gefunden wurden, sind unlängst zwei weitere Exemplare dieses Typs entdeckt worden. Diese beiden Gürtel unterscheiden sich jedoch von den anderen, da sie aus vergoldetem Silber hergestellt und mit zahlreichen Motiven dekoriert sind. Als eine weitere Besonderheit ist dabei eine figurale Komposition zu nennen. Um diese zu verstehen, muß man das Objekt in vertikaler Position betrachten, ein Beweis dafür, daß es nicht als Gürtel direkt getragen worden ist. Es ist sicher, daß als Inspiration für diese Schmuckart makedonische Goldblechgegenstände aus dem 6. Jahrhundert v. Chr. dienten, wie sie besonders aus der Nekropole von Sindos bekannt sind. Abstract Deux nouvelles ceintures en argent de type Mramorac furent découvertes récemment dans la vallée de la Velika Morava qui en avait révélé déjà 10 exemplaires. Mais ces ceintures se distinguent des autres par le fait qu'elles sont dorées et décorées de nombreux motifs. Une autre particularité à relever est la composition figurative. Pour la comprendre, il faut orienter l'objet à la verticale, une preuve que l'on ne le portait pas directement comme une ceinture. Il est certain que ce type de parure fut influencé par des objets en feuille d'or macédoniens datant du 6 e siècle av. J.-C., tels qu'on les connaît particulièrement pour la nécropole de Sindos. Abstract In the valley of the Large Morava, where previously some ten silver, Mramorac-type belts were found, two further belts of this type were recently unearthed. These two belts are however distinct from the others, because they are made of gilded silver and are decorated with myriad motifs. A further peculiarity is a figural composition. In order to understand this, one has to view the object in vertical position, which proves that it was not worn directly as a belt. The inspiration for this type of decoration was most certainly Macedonian gold-plated objects from the 6th century BC, as known particularly from the necropolis of Sindos.

In der Älteren Eisenzeit erscheint im Zusammenhang mit der Sachkultur skythischer Prägung der Szentes-Vekerzug-Gruppe eine besonders markante Form an bronzenen, mitunter auch knöchernen, kreuzförmigen Beschlägen, die in der Forschung vielfach diskutiert worden ist. Die Mehrzahl der Autoren identifizierte die kreuzförmigen Beschläge als Verzierung oder Aufhängungselement am Köcher des Bogenschützens. Mit Ausblick auf archäologische Befunde und einer Reliefdarstellung in der Apadãna von Persepolis wird im folgenden Text diese Interpretation untermauert. Zudem wird gezeigt, daß das Aufkommen dieser Gegenstandsgruppe bereits früher, und zwar um die Mitte und im Verlauf der zweiten Hälfte des 7. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. anzunehmen ist und nicht wie bislang im 6. und 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Dies bezieht sich auch auf die mit den Beschlägen vergesellschafteten Gegenstände, unter denen besonders Eisentrensen vom Typ Szentes-Vekerzug eine weitere Leitform des Vekerzug-Komplexes darstellen. Die kreuzförmigen Beschläge erscheinen als eine karpatenländische Schöpfung der dort ansässigen Gruppen skythischer Prägung. Abstract Au Premier âge du Fer, une forme particulièrement marquante d'appliques cruciformes en bronze, parfois aussi en os, qui fut discutée à maintes reprises par les chercheurs, apparaît dans la culture matérielle du groupe de Szentes-Vekerzug influencée par les Scythes. La majorité des auteurs identifie ces appliques à des décors ou des éléments de fixation du carquois des archers. Un regard sur les contextes archéologiques et le relief d'Apadãna de Persépolis renforce cette interprétation. On y démontre en outre que l'apparition de ce groupe d'objets remonte déjà au milieu et à la deuxième moitié du 7 e siècle et non aux 6 e et 5 e siècles av. J.-C. comme on le pensait auparavant. Ceci vaut également pour les objets associés aux appliques, en particulier les mors en fer du type Szentes-Vekerzug, une autre forme caractéristique du complexe Vekerzug. Les appliques cruciformes représentent une création des groupes à influence scythe établis dans les Carpates. Abstract In connection with the Scythian-influenced material culture of the Szentes-Vekerzug Group in the later Iron Age, there appears a particularly distinctive kind of cruciform fittings, made of bronze and occasionally bone, which have been frequently discussed in the research. The majority of authors have identified the cruciform fittings as decorative or hanging elements for the archer's quiver. In view of archaeological finds and a relief scene in the Apadana of Persepolis, the following article supports this interpretation. In addition, it may be presumed that this group of objects originated in an earlier period - in the middle to second half of the 7th century BC - and not, as previously assumed, in the 6th and 5th century BC. This is based also on the objects found in the vicinity of the fittings, of which the Szentes-Vekerzug iron snaffles in particular represent a further type-form of the Vekerzug complex. The cruciform fittings appear to have been created in the Carpathian Basin by the Scythian-influenced groups settled there.

Analysen zur sozialen Gliederung stellen einen wesentlichen Aspekt der archäologischen Forschung dar. In der Regel dienen Gräberfelder bzw. Grabinventare als Grundlage für die Herausarbeitung gesellschaftlicher Differenzierungsprozesse. Aber auch Siedlungen bilden eine wichtige Komponente innerhalb dieser komplexen Thematik, spiegeln sie doch unmittelbar die Organisation vor- und frühgeschichtlicher Siedlungsgemeinschaften wider. Nur in seltenen Fällen gelingt es, einen konkreten Bezug zwischen einem Bestattungsplatz und einer Siedlungsstelle herzustellen. Da sich sozialer Status nur bedingt an Grabbeigaben messen läßt, ist eine Verknüpfung beider Befundkategorien jedoch unerläßlich. In Hitzacker-Marwedel, Lkr. Lüchow-Dannenberg, konnte in direkter Nachbarschaft zu den bekannten Prunkgräbern des 2. Jahrhunderts n.Chr. ein ausgedehntes Siedlungsareal durch Feldbegehungen und Luftbilder, geophysikalische Prospektion und erste Grabungen ermittelt werden, das nach Aussage des reichhaltigen Fundmaterials ebenfalls diesem Zeitabschnitt zuzuweisen ist. Ausdehnung, Topographie und eine intensive Eisenverhüttung betonen die Sonderstellung des Platzes im kaiserzeitlichen Besiedlungsumfeld. Es bietet sich damit erstmals die Möglichkeit, die Entstehung und Entwicklung eines oder mehrerer „Herrenhöfe“ der römischen Kaiserzeit und damit die Herausbildung der in den Gräbern vom „Lübsow-Typ“ greifbaren sozialen Elite an einem Fundplatz aufzuzeigen. Abstract Les études sur l'organisation sociale représentent un aspect important de la recherche archéologique. Les nécropoles, et les inventaires funéraires, servent généralement de base à l'élaboration de processus de différenciation sociale. Mais, les habitats forment également une composante importante dans cette thématique complexe, vu qu'ils reflètent directement l'organisation de communautés pré- et protohistoriques. On ne parvient que rarement à établir un lien concret entre une nécropole et un habitat. Comme le mobilier funéraire ne traduit le statut social que sous certaines conditions, il est absolument nécessaire de corréler les deux catégories de contextes. A Hitzacker-Marwedel, Lkr. Lüchow-Dannenberg, des prospections, des vues aériennes, la prospection géophysique et les premières fouilles ont permis d'identifier un vaste habitat aux alentours immédiats des tombes princières connues du 2 e siècle ap. J.-C., qui peut être daté de la même époque grâce au matériel abondant découvert. Sa dimension, sa topographie et une sidérurgie intensive soulignent l'importance de la localité dans cette zone de peuplement de l'époque impériale. C'est aussi la première fois que l'on peut montrer la fondation et le développement d'une ou de plusieurs „résidences princières“ de l'époque impériale romaine et, par là, la genèse sur un site de l'élite sociale saisissable à travers les tombes du type „Lübsow“. Abstract Analyses of social structures represent an essential part of archaeological research. Normally, cemeteries and grave inventories serve as the basis for determining societal processes of differentiation. But settlements also play an important role within this complex subject area, reflecting as they do the organization of prehistoric and archaic settlement communities. Only in rare cases can a concrete link between a burial place and a settlement site be established. As social status cannot be measured unequivocally by grave gifts, making a connection between both categories of finds is indispensable. In Hitzacker-Marwedel in the Lüchow-Dannenberg district, next to a known ceremonial grave of the 2nd century AD, an extensive settlement site was discovered by field inspections, aerial images, electromagnetic surveying and initial excavations. On the basis of the substantial finds found here, this site can also be attributed to the 2nd century AD. The spread, topography and intensive iron smelting underscore the special status of this site in the context of colonization during the Roman Empire. It offers a first opportunity to present the origins and development of one or several „princely courts“ of the Roman Empire and thus the emergence of a social elite found in the „Lübsow type“ graves at one single site.
