SUMMARY The cognitive science of religion is a multi-disciplinary research program that attempts to integrate the study of religion with behavioural sciences such as cognitive sciences. Such integration raises several methodological questions that concern, for example, the nature of the relationship between psychology and social life, the autonomy of the study of religion and the role of causal explanations in social sciences. This article examines the methodological assumptions of the cognitive science of religion and analyses possible drawbacks as well as advantages of a naturalistic study of religion. Finally, this article argues that we should allow different kinds of methodological frameworks in the study of religion. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Mit den »Kognitionswissenschaften der Religion« wird ein multidisziplinäres Wissenschaftsprogramm bezeichnet, dessen Ziel es ist, Theologie und Religionswissenschaften mit Verhaltenswissenschaften wie den Kognitionswissenschaften zu verflechten. Solch eine Verflechtung stellt vor verschiedene methodologische Fragen, die beispielsweise das Verhältnis von Psychologie und Sozialleben, die Autonomie von Theologie und Religionswissenschaften und die Rolle von kausalen Erklärungen in den Sozialwissenschaften betreffen. Dieser Artikel untersucht die methodologischen Prämissen der Kognitionswissenschaft der Religion und analysiert mögliche Probleme wie auch Vorteile des naturalistischen Ansatzes in Theologie und Religionswissenschaften. Der Artikel vertritt abschließend die These, dass in Theologie und Religionswissenschaften verschiedene methodologische Rahmentheorien zugelassen werden sollten.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Der Einfluss Heinrich Barths auf die diastatische Auffassung der Gott-Mensch-Beziehung in der »dialektischen Theologie« seines Bruders Karl scheint bedeutend gewesen zu sein. Der Autor des vorliegenden Beitrags vertritt jedoch die Ansicht, dass sowohl Karl Barth wie auch eine gängige Einschätzung des Sachverhalts im Blick auf Heinrich Barths Position Opfer eines Missverständnisses geworden sind, demgegenüber diese Position in ihrem dauerhaft haltbaren Sinn zu rekonstruieren und zu rehabilitieren ist. Die für Heinrich Barths philosophisches Werk insgesamt in der Tat kennzeichnende Akzentuierung der Transzendenz (bezüglich der transzendentalen Prinzipien beziehungsweise Gottes) muss mit Bezug auf die Platonische Idee des Guten in erster Linie als Transzendenz gegenüber einer theoretischen Gesamtschau verstanden werden, welche die ethische Lebensproblematik bedenkenlos vereinnahmt und damit um ihre Aktualität bringt. So verstanden bedeutet Heinrich Barths Betonung der Transzendenz nicht das Aufreißen einer kaum mehr überbrückbaren Kluft, sondern verweist vielmehr auf die Aufgabe, das Gott-Mensch-Verhältnis, den Begriff einer »Gotteserkenntnis« und letztlich die Problematik der Transzendenz als solche von einem Gesichtspunkt aus neu zu bestimmen, für den die ethische Lebensproblematik im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit steht. SUMMARY Heinrich Barth's influence on the diastatical conception of the God-man-relationship in his brother Karl's Dialectical Theology seems to be important. The author of the following contribution however suggests the opinion, that both Karl Barth himself and a common view of the matter have been victims of a misunderstanding of Heinrich Barth's position, in contrast to which this position has to be reconstructed and rehabilitated in its durable sense. The accentuation of transcendence , relative to the transcendental principles respectively God, which is indeed significant of Heinrich Barth's work as a whole, has to be understood, in reference to Plato's Idea of the Good, first of all as transcendence in relation to a theoretical view of the whole, which does not hesitate to integrate the problematic of life and ethics by eliminating its actuality. In this understanding Heinrich Barth's emphasis of transcendence does not mean to tear open a gap which is hardly ever to be bridged, but refers to the task of a redefinition of the God-man-relationship, the notion of “Gotteserkenntnis” and, in last terms, the problem of transcendence as such, starting from a point of view for which the problematic of life and ethics is in the centre of attention.

SUMMARY This article assesses the significance of a “politics of life”, also termed biopolitics, for any theological analysis of death. By charting the manner in which modern theological approaches to death are closely related to political attempts to secure life (especially in the work of Hobbes), the piece hopes to offer a theological history of the present from which a theology of death might be re-envisioned. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Dieser Artikel beurteilt die Bedeutung einer »Politik des Lebens«, auch Biopolitik genannt, für die theologische Analyse des Todes. Es werden moderne theologische Denkmodelle zum Thema Tod betrachtet, die mit politischen Bestrebungen zum Schutz von Leben verknüpft sind (insbesondere bei Hobbes). Auf diese Weise möchte der Artikel eine theologische Gegenwartsgeschichte anbieten, durch die eine neue Theologie des Todes denkbar wird.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Der Aufsatz diskutiert die Neutralität des Staates als Thema theologischer Ethik. Die ideologische Neutralität hängt von einer spezifischen Haltung von Staat und Gesetz gegenüber religiösen Überzeugungen und Gemeinschaften ab. Diese beinhaltet sowohl die Garantie von Religionsfreiheit als auch das Recht, sich jeglicher Religion zu enthalten. In pluralistischen Gesellschaften ist es unumgänglich, zwischen religiösen Gemeinschaften, die den Prinzipien der Verfassung beipflichten, und religiösen Organisationen, die dies nicht tun, zu unterscheiden. Deshalb muss die Theologie ihre eigene Position in Bezug auf ein christliches Verständnis von Staat und Gesetz sowie auf die Verfassung selbst klären. SUMMARY The article discusses the neutrality of the state as a topic for Theological Ethics. Ideological neutrality depends on a specific attitude of state and law towards religious convictions and communities. That includes both the guarantee of religious liberty and the right to dissent from any religion. In pluralistic societies it is absolutely necessary to distinguish between religious communities which agree with the constitutional principles and religious organisations which do not. Therefore, theology has to clarify its own position on a Christian understanding of state and law and of the constitution itself.
