Riassunto: Le fonti relative alle paludi di Eritre in Asia Minore sono qui riesaminate in chiave storico-ambientale. La menzione dell'organizzazione degli heleoreontes o ‚Guardiani delle paludi‘ su una pietra confinaria dai dintorni di Eritre fornisce evidenza circa l'amministrazione della chōra cittadina nel periodo tardo Classico – primo Ellenistico. Una nuova datazione per l'iscrizione è suggerita, precisamente al tardo IV secolo a. C., quando le città greche della costa anatolica furono conquistate dai Macedoni. I ‚Guardiani delle paludi‘ erano probabilmente membri di una delle chiliastyes (‚gruppi di mille‘) territoriali forse introdotte sotto Alessandro Magno. L'evidenza disponibile induce ad annoverare le locali paludi nel gruppo delle antiche e oggi per lo più estinte ‚foreste allagate‘ mediterranee.

Zusammenfassung: Die Stadt Tarent wurde durch ‚Parthenier‘ aus Sparta gegründet. Durch eine Analyse der Quellen zur Gründungsgeschichte kann gezeigt werden, dass die Spartaner wegen der hohen Verluste im Messenischen Krieg gezwungen waren, Heloten freizulassen, die bereit waren, auf spartanischer Seite zu kämpfen. Um die Zahl der spartanischen Bürger zu erhöhen, sollten die freigelassenen Heloten mit Witwen gefallener Spartaner Kinder zeugen. Aufgrund von Auseinandersetzungen um die Rechte der Freigelassenen und deren Kinder kam es zu einer bürgerkriegsartigen Situation. Die aufständischen Heloten wurden aus Sparta in eine Kolonie ausgewiesen. In dieser angespannten Situation konzipierte Lykurg eine Gesetzgebung, die die Integration der Kinder regelte, die aus den Verbindungen von freigelassenen Heloten und Witwen spartanischer Gefallener hervorgegangen waren. Die Gesetze Lykurgs zur Ehe, zur Polyandrie, zur Anerkennung neugeborener Kinder und vermutlich auch zur Erziehung sind auf diese Situation um 600 v. Chr. zu beziehen. Lykurgs „Gesetz über die Kinderzeugung“, wie es Aristoteles bezeichnet, ist ein Gesetz zur Integration von Kindern freigelassener Heloten in die spartanische Bürgerschaft.

Summary: This article investigates the topography in Herodotus' account of Xerxes' visit to the Troad in 480 BC, which consists of Mount Ida, the Scamander river, the temple of Athena Ilias at Troy and the tumuli in the surrounding landscape. It suggests that this episode, rather than taking us back to historical events of 480 BC, may (partly) be a product of Greek imagination in the ca. fifty years between Xerxes' invasion of Greece and the publication of the „Histories“, with the landscape of the Troad functioning as a catalyst. To this end, the article traces the Iliadic associations of these places, exposes several topographical problems, and explains how the stories frame Xerxes' visit as hubristic. While the article is not concerned with the historicity of the episode per se , it suggests that this historicity cannot automatically be accepted, as has hitherto generally been done.

Summary: In the current essay, I focus on the issues related to the origins and functions of a cult of the Muses in Syracuse. The research hypothesis may be defined as follows: the cult of the Muses appeared or already existed in Syracuse at the end of the 5 th or at the beginning of the 4 th century at the latest, and it was connected with the theatre. It is also very plausible that there is a connection between a place of cult and the practice of collecting mementos of famous authors. The question is inseparably linked with the interpretation of a passage written by Hermippus of Smyrna, the assessment of the parallel testimony given by Lucian, and the evaluation of the reasons behind the actions of Dionysius I described there. Thus, the present article aims at providing a proper context in which the information recounted by Hermippus might seem probable and Dionysius' motives – understandable.

Summary: The dating of the Great Festival at Alexandria described by Callixeinus (in Athenaeus) is controversial: the most widely accepted dates are the winters of 279/78, 275/74 or 271/70 BC. To the arguments for a date in the mid-270s BC should be added Athenaeus' mention (5.196 f) of a pavilion decorated with „silver“ and „golden“ thyreoi , i. e. oblong shields apparently of Celtic origin. This type of shield was not known in the Hellenistic East before the invasion of Celts into Asia Minor in 278 BC. Their appearance in the decoration of the pavilion may be connected to the destruction of the rebellious Celtic mercenaries of Ptolemy II Philadelphus on an island in the Nile Delta ca. 275 BC. This event was topical in royal propaganda of Philadelphus (in poetry, coinage, etc.). If the depiction of thyreoi alludes to this event 275/74 BC appears to be the most likely date for the Great Festival.

Summary: It is generally assumed that the religiosity of sailors in ancient Rome was nourished by an atavistic fear of the sea. This paper suggests that individual motivations varied. In the concrete case of vessel owners, shippers and traders, astrology and votive offerings were cultural dispositives to reduce risk perception and to stimulate merchant activity complementary to the fiscal stimuli to protect the costs of wreck in case of „force majeure“.

Zusammenfassung: L. Cornelius Sulla ging sowohl als Konsul des Jahres 88 v. Chr. als auch als Diktator im Jahre 81 v. Chr. gegen das Volkstribunat vor. Umstritten ist dabei schon lange, welche tribunizischen Kompetenzen er genau beschnitt. Der Aufsatz geht zunächst den betreffenden Beschränkungen nach und setzt sie zu den bekannten Handlungen der Volkstribunen und dem Charakter des Tribunats in vorsullanischer Zeit in Beziehung. Daraufhin wird der Kampf um die Restituierung der vollen tribunizischen Rechte in den 70er Jahren v. Chr. analysiert und gefragt, wer damit welche Interessen verfolgte. Das Volkstribunat erweist sich dabei als traditionsreiche Institution, die weniger vom Volk ( populus/plebs ) selbst als von führenden Kreisen sowohl für eigenständige Politik als auch für einen generellen Ausgleich des staatlichen Systems gestützt wurde.

Summary: This paper examines Josephus' account of a judicial incident that occurred in around 62 C.E., which involved both Judaean elites and the Roman imperial powers. While traditional readings of the passage have focussed on mining it for information about the nature of the Judaean council that is often referred to as the „sanhedrin“, it is here argued that this report sheds light on several other key issues related to the operation of law within the region: indigenous perspectives on loci of authority within a judicial context, the importance of judicial power within broader societal conflicts, and the role of Judaean-Roman interactions in maintaining and redefining jurisdictional boundaries. It thus constitutes a valuable testimony for understanding the operation of law in this particular part of the Roman Empire.

Zusammenfassung: Vor dem Hintergrund jüngster Studien zu Flavius Josephus, die den Historiographen nicht unmittelbar mit dem flavischen Herrscherhaus oder weiten Teilen der römischen Nobilität in Verbindung bringen, widmet sich die Untersuchung der Darstellung römischer Principes in den Büchern 18 und 19 der Antiquitates Iudaicae . Insbesondere das Attentat auf Caligula wirkt innerhalb des Werkes eingeschoben und unverbunden. Die Studie fragt nach der Verbindung von ant. Iud. 19,1–273 zur übrigen Erzählung und versucht entgegen früheren Ansätzen, die Josephus vornehmlich als Kompilator älterer Geschichtswerke verstehen, den Eigenanteil des jüdischen Historiographen herauszustreichen.

Zusammenfassung: Der spätantike Autor Palladius bietet in seinem Opus Agriculturae Angaben zu den Schattenlängen am Ende jeder Stunde in jedem Monat und ermöglicht dem Landwirt so, zum rechten Zeitpunkt zu agieren. In der Forschung wurde bisher vergeblich versucht, das System von Palladius' Zeitmessung nachzuvollziehen, die Herkunft der Angaben zu erweisen oder sie gar als Beleg für die Heimat des Autors zu deuten. Der Aufsatz schlägt eine neue Interpretation für die Berechnung der Schattenlängen bei Palladius und für ihre Nutzung vor: die Anwendung von Prinzipien der Land- für die Zeitvermessung.

Resumen: Se propone una nueva interpretación del llamado „díptico de la Consecratio “ del British Museum basada en el „Comentario al Sueño de Escipión“ de Macrobio. A partir de los bien atestiguados vínculos entre este autor y las familias senatoriales romanas de los Symmachi y los Nicomachi, se sugiere asimismo que este díptico pudo haber sido producido para conmemorar la rehabilitación oficial de Virio Nicómaco Flaviano por el emperador Valentiniano III en 431.
