Summary: On usually refers to all the figures named „Phocus“ as one and the same Phocus, the alleged eponymous hero of the Phocians, and wonder why he has so many „Doppelgänger“: one or more Homeric heroes, a son of Aecus, a son of Ornytion, and so on. This paper assumes instead that there are many different heroes whose names are Phocus, and wonders to what extent and why were they linked. Indeed the contradictory stories about Phocus represent an interesting case of the permeability of the heroes' genealogies and of the traditional narratives about them in archaic and classical Greece. A survey of the sources shows that all the figures named „Phocus“ were more than once linked together to express specific needs. These needs reflect different aims and historical events which are ascribable mainly to the archaic and classical periods. Moreover, they are concerned with Phocis as well as with Corinth, Aegina, Locris, Thebes and Thessaly. By reconstructing wherever possible the chronological context of the different layers and overlaps and by linking them to the several traditions concerning heroes named Phocus, it is possible to construct a map which describes some of the relationships, some geopolitical landscapes and, to a certain extent, even some geopolitical lines working in Central Greece and beyond from the archaic to the Roman period.

Summary: The article focuses on the status of the settlement of Salmakis and the Salmakitans mentioned in two Halicarnassian inscriptions: Syll. 3 46 and Syll. 3 45 respectively. On the basis of some thematic and formal features of Syll. 3 45, it is suggested that the status quo mirrored in the inscription is that resulting from a sympoliteia whereby Halicarnassus had absorbed the neighbouring polis of Salmakis. The article closes with some considerations on the possible location of Salmakis.

Résumé: L'enquête se donne pour objectif premier d'examiner en profondeur toutes les sources épigraphiques (principalement certains passages de la Loi de Gortyne) et narratives (en particulier certains passages de la „Politique“ d'Aristote) afin de dresser un état des lieux de la clémence parfaitement exceptionnelle de la législation et la juridiction des cités crétoises à l'égard des individus de statut servile. Dans un deuxième temps, on cherche à apporter des éléments d'explication, en élargissant la base documentaire avec l'appui des sources archéologiques.

Zusammenfassung: In der ausgehenden Republik wurden Creta und Cyrenaica zu einer Doppelprovinz vereint. Während ein provinziales koinon in Creta bereits für den Zeitpunkt der Provinzeinrichtung bezeugt ist, fehlen für Cyrenaica mit Ausnahme einer beschädigten Mosaikinschrift aus Kyrene des 2. Jh. n. Chr. explizite Belege einer solchen Institution. Aufgrund der sparsamen Quellenlage äußert ein Großteil der modernen Forschung Zweifel an der Existenz eines provinzialen koinon von Cyrenaica oder verneint eine solche gar gänzlich. Die vorliegende Studie versucht, alle relevanten literarischen, epigraphischen, numismatischen und archäologischen Quellen für die Zeit der Ptolemäer (Mitte des 3. Jh. v. Chr.) bis zur Spätantike (Ende 4. Anfang 5. Jh. n. Chr.) systematisch zusammenzutragen und in Bezug auf ein provinziales koinon kritisch zu hinterfragen. Eine Landtagsorganisation Cyrenaicas scheint in den Quellen mehrfach erwähnt zu sein: etwa als pentapolis oder, nach der Gründung von Hadrianopolis, als hexapolis und später als koinon , ethnos oder unter dem Ethnikon Cyrenenses . Als oberste Landtagsfunktionäre erscheinen Libyarchai und Archiereis . Neben den Zeugnissen zur politischen Vertretung der Provinzialen in Form von Gesandtschaften nach Rom, lassen sich gewichtige Indizien für ein provinziales koinon auch im Kontext der archäologischen Topographie der Polis Kyrene finden, so wie etwa deren Titel als Metropolis sowie provinzweite Kulte und Festspiele zu Ehren des Kaisers, der mit den traditionellen kyrenaischen Hauptgottheiten Zeus Ammon und Apollon assoziiert wurde.

Resumen: Desde el siglo III a.C., las villas de Interamna y Reate mantuvieron un litigio a causa de las obras que, para mejorar el régimen de los ríos que bañaban la zona, emprendió el censor Curio Dentado, en el 272. A partir de entonces, las lluvias copiosas afectaron no sólo a Interamna sino a la misma Roma, donde el Tíber se desbordaba por las crecidas de aquellos afluentes de su cabecera. Todo esto motivó un debate en el senado sobre medidas a tomar, que desde una perspectiva histórica siempre favorecieron a Reate.

Zusammenfassung: Berühmt-berüchtigt ist L. Sergius Catilina für seinen letztlich misslungenen Staatsstreich, die coniuratio Catilinae . Seiner gescheiterten Verschwörung sowie deren Instrumentalisierung durch Sallust und Cicero verdankt er überhaupt seinen verhältnismäßig hohen Bekanntheitsgrad. So pendelt folgerichtig das Catilina-Bild zwischen dem ruchlosen Verbrecher auf der einen und dem Sozialrevolutionär auf der anderen Seite. Beide Betrachtungsweisen verstellen den Blick auf den genuinen, historischen Catilina als relativ verarmten und sozial wie politisch abgestiegenen Patrizierspross. Als solcher strebte er nach der Restaurierung seiner altehrwürdigen gens , was er mittels eines erfolgreichen cursus honorum bis hinauf zum Konsulat zu erreichen trachtete. Im Zeitraum zwischen 66 und 63 v. Chr. bot sich ihm dafür wegen des schlagbaren Mitbewerberfelds ein einmaliges Chancenfenster. Spätestens ab 63 v. Chr. versuchte er seine karriereperspektivischen Defizite, nämlich die dürftige commendatio maiorum , die unzureichende Profilierung durch eigene Erfolge während seiner frühen politischen Laufbahn und das Fehlen eines mächtigen Förderers mittels eines dezidiert politisch-programmatischen Wahlkampfes zu kompensieren.

Zusammenfassung: Ciceros Wunsch nach einer supplicatio im Anschluss an sein kilikisches Prokonsulat ist bislang, von wenigen Ausnahmen abgesehen, kaum Beachtung geschenkt worden, die über eine gelegentliche Skizze im Rahmen biographischer Abhandlungen hinausgekommen wäre. Dabei zeigt aber gerade die Korrespondenz Ciceros während und unmittelbar nach seinem Prokonsulat sehr eindringlich, wie heftig der inneraristokratische Kampf um Auszeichnung und Prestige geführt wurde und bietet uns einen zeitgenössischen Einblick in die Mechaniken dieses Wettstreites, wie er informell im persönlichen und brieflichen Umgang und formell in den Sitzungen des Senates ausgetragen wurde. Ciceros Briefverkehr illustriert, wie komplexe Geflechte aus Verbindlichkeiten und gelegentlichen Abneigungen bei Senatsdebatten und Entscheidungen über öffentliche Auszeichnungen zum Tragen kamen und welche Mittel den Betroffenen zur Durchsetzung ihres Anliegens offenstanden. Somit geben sie uns auch einen wertvollen Blick auf die Bedeutung aristokratischen Prestiges, dessen standesinterne Verhandlung und die politische Praxis am Ende der Republik frei.

Riassunto: Il titolo di pro legato è stato considerato in letteratura segnale di un incarico maggiorato che si estrinsecava nell'assegnazione del comando di truppe legionarie a figure naturalmente sprovviste di tale facoltà, come tribuni, praefecti e procuratores Augusti. L'analisi delle fonti porta ora alla conclusione che questo titolo in epoca augustea compaia nei curricula epigrafici di ufficiali subalterni, senatorii e equestri, ad indicare una militia nel cui svolgimento erano state sommate, oltre al comando militare, alcune prerogative di carattere presidiale senza tuttavia alcuna relazione con il comando di truppe legionarie. Dall'epoca di Claudio in poi, le rare menzioni della titolatura di procurator pro legato sono invece ascrivibili a ragioni di autorappresentazione, atte a segnalare il carattere presidiale, e non fiscale, di una procuratela.

Riassunto: La piccola Iulia Florentina fu seppellita, come recita la nota iscrizione catanese che la commemora, davanti alle fores martyrum , sulla cui ubicazione si è molto discusso; secondo l'ipotesi avanzata nel presente studio, che offre una lettura del tradito CVAX diversa da quelle finora proposte, tali fores sarebbero gli archi posti nella zona compresa tra quella che un tempo era chiamata la „Strada degli Archi“ e il cosiddetto „Carcere di sant'Agata“, che, a nostro avviso, doveva essere il luogo in cui furono custodite, già in età costantiniana, le spoglie della patrona di Catania e forse anche di Euplo. L'inumazione della bimba avvenne in epoca costantiniana, come appare dalla menzione, nell'epigrafe, della carica di corrector attribuita ad un certo Zoilo; l'insolito ricorso al funzionario provinciale quale elemento di datazione va attribuito, a nostro avviso, ad una volontà ‚propagandistica‘, tesa ad esaltare l'attività dello stesso Zoilo e, indirettamente, di Costantino, in favore dei cristiani di Catania.

Summary: Macrobius' allusion to the Murder of the Innocents is considered by Alan Cameron as evidence of his having been a Christian. The murder itself, however, appears in various versions in several sources, and Macrobius thus need not have depended on Matthew who himself could only have adapted material from an originally non-Christian source. The notion of Macrobius' Christianity is not unambiguously supported either by any other indicia produced by Cameron. Charles Hedrick's overall view of the Saturnalia appears preferable to that of Cameron.

Questa è una delle poche informazioni esistenti sulla consistenza numerica dell'esercito ostrogoto e perciò è stata ampiamente citata dagli storici che si sono occupati dei Goti o di Teodorico, tuttavia un'attenta analisi delle notizie sugli Ostrogoti e sui Vandali in nostro possesso indica chiaramente che non si può prestar fede al passo procopiano.
