Beobachtungen zu den Büchern 18–20 der Antiquitates Iudaicae des Flavius Josephus

Zusammenfassung:

Vor dem Hintergrund jüngster Studien zu Flavius Josephus, die den Historiographen nicht unmittelbar mit dem flavischen Herrscherhaus oder weiten Teilen der römischen Nobilität in Verbindung bringen, widmet sich die Untersuchung der Darstellung römischer Principes in den Büchern 18 und 19 der Antiquitates Iudaicae. Insbesondere das Attentat auf Caligula wirkt innerhalb des Werkes eingeschoben und unverbunden. Die Studie fragt nach der Verbindung von ant. Iud. 19,1–273 zur übrigen Erzählung und versucht entgegen früheren Ansätzen, die Josephus vornehmlich als Kompilator älterer Geschichtswerke verstehen, den Eigenanteil des jüdischen Historiographen herauszustreichen.

Summary:

Recent studies on Flavius Josephus emphasize a distance between the historiographer and the Flavian court as well as the Roman nobility. In view of these results, the analysis attends to the presentation of the Roman emperors in books 18 and 19 of the Antiquitates Iudaicae. Especially the assassination of Caligula seems to be strangely parenthetic and unconnected within the overall narration, leading one to seek links between ant. Iud. 19,1–273 and the rest of the account. Contrary to previous studies that mainly considered Josephus a compiler of older historical works, this study therefore seeks to highlight Josephusʼ own contributions to his material.
