1. Introductory It is a commonplace by now that the expressions ‘Copernican revolution’ and ‘the Copernican hypothesis’ do not actually occur in that portion of the preface to the second edition of the Critique of Pure Reason (hereafter: ‘the Preface’) that contains the only references to Copernicus to be found in the Kantian corpus. Kant speaks rather of “der erste Gedanke des Copernicus” ( Kr V, B XVI) – literally, “the original idea” or “the initial thought” of Copernicus. Still, the word ‘revolution’ (German: ‘Revolution’, ‘Umwälzung’) occurs no fewer than six times within the Preface ( ibid ., B XI [twice], XII, XIII, XIV, XVI), though always with reference to other disciplines (mathematics and physics) and the radical innovations that set them on “der sichere Gang einer Wissenschaft” – an expression that Kant uses almost as frequently as ‘revolution’ (cf. ibid ., B VII, XIV, XIX, XXIII, XXX). Even if the term ‘revolution’ is not explicitly applied either to Kant's own achievement in philosophy or to that of Copernicus in astronomy, Kant does speak both of “eine gänzliche Revolution” in metaphysics “nach dem Beispiele der Geometer und Naturforscher” ( ibid ., B XXII) and of putting forward a “Hypothese” that he himself describes as “analogisch” to that of Copernicus ( ibid ., B XXII, Anm.). So the philological point made with such fanfare by the commentators may be philosophically moot after all.

Zwei Körper, die exakte Spiegelbilder voneinander sind, nennt Kant „inkongruente Gegenstücke”. Als Beispiel für solche Figuren, die strecken- und winkelgleich, aber nicht kongruent sind, mithin durch Translation und Drehung nicht zur Deckung gebracht werden können, gelten die rechte und die linke Hand eines Menschen. Obwohl diese beiden Objekte in den Relationen ihrer Teile und in der Größe ihrer Ausdehnung völlig gleich sind, sind sie dennoch nicht bloß hinsichtlich Ort und Lage verschieden. Beruht ihre Verschiedenheit auf einem inneren Grund oder auf einem äußeren? Machen verschiedene intrinsische oder verschiedene extrinsische Eigenschaften sie verschieden? Nach der relationalen Raumauffassung, wie sie Leibniz vertritt, müßte die Verschiedenheit inkongruenter Objekte auf verschiedenen extrinsischen Eigenschaften beruhen. Im Gegensatz dazu vertritt Kant die Auffassung, der Unterschied solcher Objekte habe einen inneren Grund. Damit spreche das Phänomen inkongruenter Gegenstücke gegen die Leibnizsche Raumkonzeption. Andererseits aber sprechen gewichtige Gründe gegen die absolute Raumauffassung Newtons. Es bedürfe folglich, so Kant, einer neuartigen Konzeption des Raumes. Als eine solche kann die in der Kritik der reinen Vernunft entwickelte Auffassung gelten, die sich von den beiden vorgefundenen darin unterscheidet, daß der Raum ursprünglich subjektiv statt ursprünglich objektiv ist.

Frauen sind ängstlich, Männer sollen mutig sein. Bei dieser Behauptung handelt es sich zwar nicht um ein wörtliches Zitat von Kant, doch gibt sie seine Auffassung recht genau wieder. Und sie kann in gewisser Weise als geradezu paradigmatisch für die Geschlechterspezifik von Emotionen stehen, so wie Kant sie sieht. Nun ließe sich einwenden, bei Ängstlichkeit und Mut handele es sich nicht um Emotionen, sondern um Charaktereigenschaften. Das soll natürlich nicht bestritten werden. Doch sind sie ebenso wie zahlreiche andere, etwa die Schamhaftigkeit, eng mit den entsprechenden Emotionen verbunden: sich ängstigen, sich schämen. Zudem benutzt Kant des Öfteren den die Charaktereigenschaft bezeichnenden Ausdruck, meint aber das Gefühl. Das ist insbesondere in von ihm selbst nicht publizierten Notizen, etwa den Reflexionen der Fall. Das gleiche gilt für die von Studierenden eilig mitgeschriebenen Vorlesungen, die oft nur in Form weiterer Nachschriften vorliegen. Hierzu ist anzumerken, dass sowohl Kants Notizen (wie sie sich in den Bemerkungen in den ‚Beobachtungen über das Gefühl des Schönen und Erhabenen‘ (1764) oder den Reflexionen finden) als auch die Mit- und Nachschriften der Vorlesungen seine Auffassung möglicherweise in geringerer Authentizität wiedergeben als die von ihm selbst publizierten Schriften. Das wird an Ort und Stelle nicht jeweils eigens erwähnt, sondern ist stets mitgedacht. Denn ich werde zur Untersuchung der Geschlechterspezifik von Emotionen bei Kant wiederholt sowohl auf die Bemerkungen und Reflexionen als auch auf Vorlesungsnachschriften zurückgreifen müssen, sind sie doch weitaus ergiebig als seine Schriften, von denen nur die Beobachtungen und die Anthropologie in pragmatischer Hinsicht (1798) ausführliche Überlegungen zu unserem Thema enthalten.

The purpose of what follows is to show that, in the 1775 collection of notes called the “ Duisburg Nachlaß ” (henceforth, DN ), Kant adapted central ideas from his early metaphysics in order to clarify the role of the thinking subject as a necessary condition of empirical knowledge. I shall try to show how these adaptations were made, how they were philosophically significant, and how they can help us understand what Kant was trying to do in the mid-1770s. The DN was written up when some of his most far-reaching ideas were starting to take shape. If we could make sense of it, it might ultimately shed light on the way Kant arrived at the mature statement of his theoretical philosophy in the Critique of Pure Reason . I cannot reconstruct the whole of this story or even offer a complete account of the DN in this paper. But I do hope to point out and clarify one interesting fact. By the mid-1770s, the thinking subject had taken the place Kant had reserved for God in his earlier metaphysics. That some such displacement was important for Kant is not an especially new or even exciting thesis. However, as I shall argue, the philosophical interest of the thesis lies in seeing exactly how Kant effected the displacement.

Introduction Kant develops a positive though regulative role for reason toward the end of the Dialectic of the Critique of Pure Reason , particularly in the Appendix to the Dialectic. In the opening section, “The Regulative Employment of the Ideas of Pure Reason”, he provides us with an account of how these ideas can unify the understanding in its employment, although only regulatively. Part of this account includes a discussion of the hypothetical use of reason, in which one inspects a group of particulars to see whether they fit a given universal and then generalizes over other future particulars that the universal will apply to them as well.
