We use a longitudinal national dataset to explore the effects of fraternity and sorority membership on students’ socially responsible leadership in the fourth year of college. Controlling for a variety of potentially confounding variables, we find no net effect. These findings run counter to an earlier study based on the same students that found positive effects of fraternity and sorority membership on socially responsible leadership in the first year of college. We discuss implications for practice and research.

In attempt to understand why men participate in study abroad at much lower rates than women, this study examines how male college students at a large research university perceive a university-run global education program, especially in terms of the expected costs and benefits of participating in such programs, and the extent to which gender schemas might influence these perceptions. Ways to more effectively recruit men to participate in study abroad are also discussed.

Esther Lloyd-Jones made significant contributions to the field of student affairs during her career, and she is known most commonly for her influence on the 1937 Student Personnel Point of View (SPPV). Much of her work can be applied to modern student affairs philosophy and practice. This study explores the early life of Lloyd-Jones, leading up to her involvement with the SPPV. Findings demonstrate the lasting influence Lloyd-Jones has had on the field of student affairs

Despite a diverse body of literature on college student retention, studies focusing on small, private, selective liberal arts colleges are limited. This study utilized a mixed methodology beginning with logistic regression analyses and followed with a qualitative inquiry that included interviews with students who had not persisted. While variables impacting persistence at selective institutions may differ from other types of institutions, the role of student affairs in student success remains critical.

This article presents the results of a qualitative exploration of the performance of masculine gender identities in six gay male students enrolled at a master’s comprehensive public institution in the Midwest. This article builds on the work of Laker and Davis (2011) and Rankin (2005). The findings indicate participants adapted their gender expressions to avoid harassment, discrimination, and physical harm, depending on their environment. Specific recommendations for college educators are offered.

Though history has long been a part of graduate preparation in higher education administration, new student affairs professionals often struggle to see its relevance to their work. We present a conceptual framework that links organizational ecology, institutional culture and climate, and student development through a historical lens. We then provide concrete recommendations regarding the framework’s use as a reflexive tool

This qualitative study explored a high-intensity, transformational service event following a natural disaster. Using data collected from promptbased journals, the researchers in this study sought to understand how social change leadership develops while serving after a natural disaster. This paper outlines how qualitative research can be used to enhance ongoing student affairs assessment plans.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of providing the Mental Health First Aid training program to student affairs staff. The objective of the training was to increase knowledge of mental health, enhance sensitivity, and raise confidence to intervene and assist individuals experiencing a mental health issue. We found the training successfully met its objectives and offers great potential to student affairs practitioners.
