Qualitative research was conducted on the attitudes and behaviors of Christians in Australian mainline churches in relation to equality, mutuality, and negotiating around needs. Using an interpretive phenomenological method, four themes emerged. The themes, with paradigmatic statements, are these: (i) Negotiation is a difficult conversation: “I go out of my way to make everybody happy. It puts me in a bind”; (ii) The struggle to achieve a balance between giving and receiving: “Sometimes I'm selfish, and then my husband leans forward on the teeter-totter”; (iii) Equality and complementarity: “We're equal in different ways”; (iv) Shared leadership: “Sometimes he's the leader, and sometimes I would be the leader.” Zusammenfassung Mit einem qualitative Forschungsdesign wurden Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen von Christen in australischen ‘mainline churches’ in Bezug auf Gleichheit, Gegenseitigkeit und das Verhandeln von Grundbedürfnissen untersucht. Unter Verwendung eines phänomenologisch-basierten Interpretationsansatzes wurden folgende vier Themen als wesentlich entdeckt, die hier jeweils mit einem paradigmatischen Interviewauszug veranschaulicht werden: (1) Verhandeln ist eine schwierige Art der Kommunikation: „Ich verlasse meine eigenen Wege, um alle anderen glücklich zu machen. Das führt mich in eine Zwickmühle.” (2) Die Bemühung um ein Gleichgewicht von Geben und Nehmen: „Manchmal bin ich egoistisch, und dann schaukelt mein Mann wieder nach vorn.” (3) Gleichheit und Komplementarität: „Wir sind auf verschiedene Weise gleich.” (4) Gemeinsame Führung: „Manchmal trifft sie die Entscheidungen, und manchmal bin ich der Bestimmer.“

The basic assumption of the article is that “ideas”, embedded in cultural contexts, shape and determine human actions. Noetics contains and represents the spiritual realm of ideas as portrayed by meaning (logos). Noetics represents the intentional dimension of life as connected to philosophical frameworks and determined by significant “ideas”. It structures fundamentally the qualitative dimension and rational conceptualization of praxis. In order to attain “praxis change” or to “heal life”, inappropriate categories, constructs, paradigms should be transformed. In this regard a practical theological hermeneutics should probe into the philosophical realm of paradigms, i. e. rational patterns of thinking and ideographic conceptualization. It is hypothesized that noetics as hermeneutical praxis reflection functions within the dynamics of cross- or interculturality. With reference to the “rationality” implied within the intentionality of praxis-thinking, the notion of ubuntu-thinking as represented in African noetics, will be analyzed in order to indicate how an intercultural debate can enrich the philosophical scope of practical theological paradigms in theory formation. In the light of this discussion a systemic and relational understanding of praxis will be proposed. Zusammenfassung Menschliches Handeln wird durch “Gedanken” geformt und bestimmt, die in kulturellen Kontexten verwurzelt sind, so lautet die Hauptthese dieses Beitrags. Er beschäftigt sich dazu intensiv mit der Disziplin der Noetik, die den spirituellen Bereich von Gedanken beinhaltet und repräsentiert, der durch den Begriff des “Sinns” (logos) klassischerweise erfasst wird. Noetik konzentriert sich damit auf die intentionale Dimension des Lebens in Verbundenheit zu den philosophischen Rahmenbedingungen und ihrer Bestimmung durch prägende „Gedanken“. Sie strukturiert somit grundlegend die qualitative Dimension und vernünftige Konzeptualisierung von Praxis. Um eine Änderung von Praxis oder eine „Heilung des Lebens“ zu erreichen, sollten deshalb unangemessene Kategorien, Konstrukte und Paradigmata transformiert werden. In dieser Hinsicht sollte, so das Anliegen des Autors, eine praktisch-theologische Hermeneutik die philosophischen Grundlagen von Paradigmata untersuchen, beispielsweise die rationalen Muster des Denkens und ideographische Konzeptionen. Dabei wird angenommen, dass Noetik als hermeneutische Praxisreflexion innerhalb der Dynamik von Cross- oder Interkulturalität hilfreich ist. In Bezug auf diejenige „Rationalität“, die der Intentionalität von Praxis- Denken innewohnt, wird hier dann das Konzept des „Ubuntu”, das in der afrikanischen Noetik eine wichtige Rolle spielt, analysiert, um aufzuzeigen, wie ein interkultureller Dialog auch die philosophischen Grundlagen praktisch-theologischer Paradigmata in der Theoriebildung bereichern kann. Im Zusammenhang dieser Diskurse wird ein systematisches und relationales Verständnis von Praxis vorgeschlagen.

J.S. Bach's motet „Jesu, meine Freude“ (BWV 227) combines three textual layers: two language texts (verses from Paul's letter to the Romans, and Franck's sacred hymn from the 17th century) and Bach's musical „text“. This essay investigates the relation between these three „texts“. An introductory chapter (I.) considers the historical background of the composition of the motet. Then (II.), both literary layers are analysed through a comparison of the texts. The (significant) differences between them are highlighted and it is shown how they relate to each other in combination, sometimes even resulting in a shift of their original meaning. In the next chapter (III.) the layer of Bach's music is added to the hermeneutical analysis by exploring its structural function and how the music can support, or even reshape, the meaning of the words. The last chapter (IV.) begins by investigating possibilities of a theological hermeneutics of „mere“ music independently from words. Unlike hermeneutical approaches that too quickly identify musical experiences with „religious“ experiences, the thesis suggested here is that musical experience may indeed be understood as analogous to legitimate religious experience, but is called to accountability before the „Logos“ to remain theologically responsible. Just as Franck's poem individualizes and emotionalizes Paul's dogmatics, so does Bach's music individualize and emotionalize both texts, instigating or even necessitating a combination of an aesthetics of work and reception.

Through a detailed analysis this paper demonstrates the usefulness of investigating public worship events as a site for studying the construction of ordinary theology. By identifying the theological narratives being enacting and affirmed by a specific group in such contexts helps strengthen our understanding of the documentary of a specific community. It also illustrates how the particular of a given culture is linked to and used to situate the larger narrative tradition. We suggest more studies of narrative and flow of worship events would benefit Practical Theology to help reveal new aspects of construction and flow of ordinary theology for evangelical and charismatics groups. Zusammenfassung Mit Hilfe einer detaillierten Analyse veranschaulicht dieser Beitrag den Wert der Erforschung öffentlicher Gottesdienste fü die Auseinandersetzung mit der Entstehung und Vermittlung von Laien-Theologie. Durch die Rekonstruktion der theologischen Erzählungen, die durch die Handlungen der an solchen Ereignissen Beteiligten erzeugt und bestätigt werden, gelingt es, das theologische Verständnis einer spezifischen Gemeinschaf und seiner Formen der Darstellung besser zu verstehen. Außerdem wird so illustriert, wie das Spezifische einer gegebenen Kultur mit allgemeineren narrativen Traditionen verbunden ist und auf diese bezogen wird. Es wird deshalb vorgeschlagen, weitere Studien über die Erzählungen und den Ablauf von Gottesdiensten durchzuführen, damit die Praktische Theologie gewinnbringend neue Aspekte der Konstruktion und Gestaltung der Laien-Theologie im Bereich evangelikaler und charismatischer Gruppierungen zu entdecken vermag.

In this study psychological type theory was employed to profile samples of 2,135 women and 1,169 men in the context of Anglican church services in England in order to establish how representative churchgoers are of the wider population and how compatible churchgoers are with their clergy. The women displayed preferences for sensing (82 %), feeling (70 %), and judging (85 %), with a balance between extraversion (51 %) and introversion (49 %). The men displayed preferences for introversion (62 %), sensing (78 %), thinking (58 %), and judging (86 %). These characteristics are compared with the United Kingdom population norms to establish the distinctiveness of Anglican churchgoers and compared with previously published data on Anglican clergy to establish the points of similarity, differences and potential tension between Anglican clergy and laity. Zusammenfassung In dieser Studie wurde anhand einer Stichprobe von 2135 Frauen und 1169 Männern eine psychologische Typentheorie – der Myer-Briggs-Typen-Indikator – genutzt, um zu überprüfen, inwiefern die Kirchenmitglieder der anglikanischen Kirche einerseits in dieser Hinsicht repräsentativ für die gesamte Bevölkerung sind und andererseits inwieweit sie mit ihren Geistlichen übereinstimmen. Bei den Frauen konnten Präferenzen im Bereich Sensing (82 %), Feeling (70 %) und Judging (85 %) und ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Extraversion (51 %) und Introversion (49 %) analysiert werden. Bei den Männern ließ sich eine Präferenz der Introversion (62 %), des Sensing (78 %) und Thinking (58 %) sowie Judging (86 %) messen. Im Vergleich zur Bevölkerung Groß Britanniens und den anglikanischen Geistlichen wurden dann die spezifischen Charakteristika der anglikanischen Kirchenmitglieder herausgearbeitet und Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede sowie potentielle Spannungen insbesondere zwischen den anglikanischen Geistlichen und den Laien beschrieben.

Zusammenfassung Galt Autonomie lange Zeit als nahezu unhinterfragtes Leitziel (ethischer) Erziehung, so wird diese in den letzten Jahren verstärkt hinterfragt. Gerade in Medien und Populärwissenschaften wird an die Stelle eines autonom und selbstbewusst handelnden Subjekts auf die heteronome Vermittlung eines grundlegenden Wertekanons gesetzt. Der Aufsatz sichtet angesichts dieser Problemanzeige verschiedene Modelle ethischer Erziehung und erörtert Anfragen aus Erziehungswissenschaft und Studien zur Moralentwicklung. Abschließend kommt er zu einer Bestimmung von ethischer Erziehung in Autonomie (nicht zu Autonomie) und lotet darin den Beitrag des Christentums aus. Abstract Though autonomy has functioned as the unquestioned goal of (ethical) upbringing in the past, it has become increasingly scrutinized in past years. Particularly the Media places weight on a fundamental canon of values in place of the autonomic, self-confident individual. In view of this problem, this article brings to light different models of ethical upbringing and discusses pedagogic enquiries along with experimental studies concerned with moral development. Ultimately, the article will come to a conclusion in which ethical upbringing in Autonomy, as opposed to upbringing with the ultimate goal of autonomy, is the appropriate method. This will be discussed in light of contributions from Christianity.

Pastoral Care is an important task of the church and its congregations. It contributes to the personal development of the individuals as well as to the processes of growth of the congegation. To support the pastoral care of a congregation, you need to know how it works. In this International Report it is analysed how 29 pastors of the Estonian Protestant Churches (Luthera, Methodist, Baptist, Pentecostal) think about the status of pastoral care. The results show that first of all it is important for them to come to a clear definition of what they mean when they talk about pastoral care. They described the different ways of pastoral care in their congregations, who is in need of pastoral care, which characteristics the role of a pastoral care giver should entail, which problems and challenges they face and where they see possibilities of cooperation with other fields of knwoledge. On the background of this analysis the authors present ideas how to develope pastoral care in Estonian protestant Churches and congregations.

Spirituality is on one hand a diffuse phenomenon, which represents a „zeitgeist“. It seems to represent something new or even timeless. On the other hand, the word describes nothing else than a praxis pietatis , various elements of which derive from ancient and traditional faith in Protestantism. This article reflects first on the history and the meanings of the term. Then it explores into the role of the desert fathers in modern spirituality. The last part deals with the conditions and possibilities of a definite protestant theology of spirituality as an academic task.   Zusammenfassung Spiritualität ist auf der einen Seite ein diffuses religiöses Phänomen, das wie ein Marktartikel einen Zeitgeist repräsentiert, der auf Neues und zugleich vermeintlich Zeitloses aus ist. Auf der anderen Seite ist das Wort „Spiritualität“ nur ein anderes Wort für eine praxis pietatis , wie sie auch im herkömmlichen Christentum und damit im traditionellen Protestantismus existiert. Der Aufsatz zeichnet, nachdem er der Begriffsgeschichte, den Bedeutungsdimensionen und der Rolle der Wüstenväter für die heutige Spiritualitätsliteratur nachgegangen ist, eine Skizze einer möglichen protestantischen Theologie der Spiritualität. Dazu fragt er nach Bedingungen und Möglichkeiten innerhalb des Protestantismus. Die akademische Theologie ist gefordert, die Entwicklungen kritisch-konstruktiv zu begleiten.
