In this review an exhaustive crystallochemical analysis of copper(I) π-complexes with allyl derivatives of heterocyclic compounds has been performed. Structural genesis of inorganic constituents starting from the simplest units to the most complicated aggregates was considered taking into account the specific role of Cu-(C=C) interaction, the construction of the organic ligands, the basicity and nucleophilic activity of their heteroatoms, as well as olefin Cu(I) π-complex preparation route.

This review includes over two hundred heterotetranuclear platinum clusters. The clusters are of the compositions Pt3M, Pt3M2, PtM3, Pt′2MM′, PtM2M′ and PtMM′M”. There are twenty five different M atoms (transition and non-transition) as a partner(s) of platinum. The four metal atoms are found in a tetrahedral, planar-rhombohedral, butterfly, spited-triangular, cubane, eight — and oligo-membered rings and a unique structures. There is wide variety of the ligands from uni to- undecadentate, with the most common P and C donor sites. The shortest Pt-M (transition) versus Pt-M (non-transition) bond distances are 2.4833(8)Å (M=Pd) vs. 2.4365(5)Å (Ge). Several relationships between the various structural parameters were found and are discussed.

Diesel exhaust is one of the major sources of fine and ultrafine particulate matter in urban air. Toxicity of diesel-powered engine emissions has been quite widely assessed, however, much less information is available on their ecotoxicity. In our study the kinetic version of the Vibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition bioassay, based on the ISO 21338:2010 standard, was used to characterise the ecotoxicity of diesel-powered cars. The method is sensitive enough to test the ecotoxic effect of the emission of individual vehicles. In general, significant positive correlation was found between ecotoxicity (expressed as Toxic Unit /TU/values) and total carbon (TC) as well as between TU and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations.

The stability change of nickel(II) ion complexes including one and two nicotinamide (B3 vitamin) molecules in aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide (XDMSO = 0–0.85 m.f.) was studied at 298.2±0.1 K and 0.25 ionic strength value (NaClO4) using the potentiometric method. The first stage constant of complexation increased until organic solvent concentration was 0.5 m.f. and reduced at higher DMSO content. The difference between complex and central ions solvation is a dominating contribution into the Gibbs energy change of mononicotinamide complex formation reaction. When the second ligand molecule was bonded into the coordination compound, the nicotinamide contribution to ΔtrGr rose and became prevailing at XDMSO = 0.7–0.85. The ligand was found to replace a water molecule in the coordination sphere of the cation according to spectrophotometric study results.

The second-order rate constants k for the alkaline hydrolysis of phenyl esters of meta-, para- and ortho-substituted benzoic acids, X-C6H4CO2C6H5, in aqueous 50.9% acetonitrile have been measured spectrophotometrically at 25°C. The log k values for meta and para derivatives correlated well with the Hammett σm,p substituent constants. The log k values for ortho-substituted phenyl benzoates showed good correlations with the Charton equation, containing the inductive, σI, resonance, σ○ R, and steric, E s B, and Charton υ substituent constants. For ortho derivatives the predicted (log k X)calc values were calculated with equation (log k ortho)calc = (log k H AN)exp + 0.059 + 2.19σI + 0.304σ○ R + 2.79E s B − 0.0164ΔEσI — 0.0854ΔEσ○ R, where DE is the solvent electrophilicity, ΔE = E AN — E H20 = −5.84 for aqueous 50.9% acetonitrile. The predicted (log k X)calc values for phenyl ortho-, meta- and para-substituted benzoates in aqueous 50.9% acetonitrile at 25°C precisely coincided with the experimental log k values determined in the present work. The substituent effects from the benzoyl moiety and aryl moiety were compared by correlating the log k values for the alkaline hydrolysis of phenyl esters of substituted benzoic acids, X-C6H4CO2C6H5, in various media with the corresponding log k values for substituted phenyl benzoates, C6H5CO2C6H4-X.

Formation of a silver selenide layer on silicone coated polyamide cloth was investigated. Fabric samples were selenized in potassium selenotrithionate (K2SeS2O6) solution then treated with AgNO3 solution. Formation of a silver selenide particle layer on the surface was confirmed by a change in appearance, X-ray diffraction, and EDX analysis. XRD revealed two phases: orthorhombic naumannite (Ag2Se) and monoclinic selenium (Se8). SEM showed that the fabric macrostructure and the multifilament yarn microstructure was preserved. The silver selenide particles ranged from 100 nm to more than 20 µm.

The concentration of elements in sediments is an important aspect of the quality of water ecosystems. The element concentrations in bottom sediments from Goczalkowice Reservoir, Poland, were investigated to determine the levels, accumulation and distribution of elements; to understand the contamination and potential toxicity of elements; and to trace the possible source of pollution. Sediments were collected from 8 sampling points. The functional speciation, mobility and bioavailability of elements were evaluated by means of modified Tessier sequential extraction. The element contents were measured by optical emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. The experimental results were analyzed using chemometric methods such as principal component analysis and cluster analysis to elucidate the metal distributions, correlations and associations. The highest concentrations of most elements were found at the center of the reservoir. The distribution of metals in the individual fractions was varied. To assess the extent of anthropogenic impact indices, contamination factor, degree of contamination, metal pollution index and risk assessment code were applied. The calculated factors showed the highest contamination factor and the ability of chromium to be released from sediments. The degree of contamination showed that the area is characterized by a very high contamination. Strontium and manganese showed high potential ecological risk for sediments.

Nanoparticles of nitrogen-modified TiO2 (N-doped TiO2) calcined at 300°C and 350°C, have been prepared with and without water rinsing. Samples were characterized by x-ray diffractrometry (XRD) and optical spectroscopy. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra from centers involving oxygen vacancies were recorded for all samples. These could be attributed to paramagnetic surface centers of the hole type, for example to paramagnetic oxygen radicals O−, O2−etc. The concentration of these centers increased after water rising and it further increased for samples annealed at higher temperature. Additionally, for samples calcined at 300°C, and calcined at 350°C and rinsed, the EPR spectra evidenced the presence of magnetic clusters of Ti3+ ions. The photocatalytic activity of samples was studied towards phenol decomposition under unltraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) irradiation. It was found that, in comparison to the starting materials, the rinsed materials showed increased photocatalytic activity towards phenol oxidation. The light absorption (UV-Vis/DRS) as well as surface Fourier transform infrared/diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (FTIR/DR) studies confirmed a significantly enhanced light absorption and the presence of nitrogen groups on the photocatalysts surfaces, respectively. A significant increase of concentration of paramagnetic centers connected with oxygen vacancies after water rising has had an essential influence on increasing their photocatalytic activity.

Thick (400 µm) glow-discharge nitrided layers, TiN+Ti2N + αTi(N) type, have been produced on the Ti-1Al-1Mn titanium alloy. Using a progressive thinning method, the polarization characteristics at different depths of nitrided layers have been measured. From the plots of obtained potentiodynamic polarization curves the depth profiles of characteristic anodic and cathodic currents (at potentials corresponding to (a) hydride formation, (b) hydrogen evolution, (c) primary passivation, (d) oxygen evolution and (e) secondary passivation) as well as polarization resistance have been determined in 0.5 M Na2SO4 solution acidified to pH = 2. The anomalously high slope of the polarization curves in the cathodic region has been ascribed to the formation of titanium hydride. It has been shown that outer nitrided layers (up to 25 µm) exhibit excellent acid corrosion resistance owing to strong inhibition of the anodic process by TiN phase. Corrosion resistance of deeper situated layers gradually decreases and at depths of 250–370 µm the corrosion process is accelerated by presence of TiO2 precipitations. Nitrided layers, unlike the alloy core, allow oxygen evolution on the oxy-nitrided surface at potential of +1.6 V and at more positive potentials gradual transformation of the surfacial film into TiO2 takes place. Secondary passivation on nitrided titanium is less efficient than that in the absence of Ti-N species.

Thermal-treated carbons from acorn and cypress cone were prepared and characterized. The uptakes of heavy metal ions (Ag+, Cd2+ and Cr+3) and organics (phenol, methylene blue and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate) from aqueous solution have been studied. Effects of activation by HCl and HNO3 acids on the sorption properties of these carbons were investigated by mass titration, sorption isotherms, IRS, SEM and XRS. The models of Langmuir and Freundlich do not represent our sorption data very well. An earlier proposed empirical correlation is applied successfully to carry out a parameter of comparison between the studied carbons. The acidic treatment changes the surface chemical properties of the two thermal-treated carbons lowering their sorption performances. The carbons show good capacities to uptake metals, phenol and methylene blue, but sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate is removed from its solutions to minor extent. The up-taking properties are found similar to those of two worldwide used commercial grade carbons.

Here we report the transformation of tetracyclic morphinan salutaridine (1) into 2,3,10,11-tetrasubstituted (R)-aporphines. This method serves as another chemical proof of the previously verified biosynthetic connection with pentacyclic morphinan-6,8-diene-type thebaine. In the presence of nucleophiles, this procedure could lead to pharmacologically interesting new tetrasubstituted aporphinoids. The enantioselective synthesis of 7S-salutaridinol (2) has been also achieved in order to investigate the acid-catalyzed reactions of this natural morphinan.

Quantitative structure-retention relationship (QSRR) was developed for a series of estrane derivatives, on the basis of their retention data, obtained in reversed-phase thin-layer chromatography (RP TLC), and in silico molecular descriptors. Physicochemical and topological descriptors, as well as molecular bulkiness descriptors, were calculated from the optimized molecular structures. Full geometry optimization was achieved by using Austin Model 1 (AM1) semi-empirical molecular orbital method. In the present study, QSRR analysis was based on principal component analysis (PCA), multiple linear regression (MLR) and partial least squares (PLS) method. PCA was applied in order to reveal similarities or dissimilarities between analytes, and MLR and PLS regression methods were carried out in order to identify the most important in silico molecular descriptors and quantify their influence on the retention behaviour of studied compounds. Physically meaningful and statistically significant structure-retention relationships were established.

Two flavonoids, karanjin (Kj) and karanjachromene (Kc) have been investigated spectrophotometrically for their mode of interactions with double stranded (ds)-DNA at blood (7.4) and stomach (4.7) pH and at human body temperature (37°C). Benesi-Hildebrand equation was used to evaluate the binding constants, K b . Binding constants at both pH values and at body temperature showed stronger binding of both the flavonoids and formation of 1:1 flavonoid-DNA complex via intercalative mode. However, K b values for karanjin were evaluated to be comparatively greater than karanjachromene at both pH values. The highest value of binding constant (1.32×105 M−1) for karanjin at blood pH (7.4) demonstrated its comparatively stronger binding and greater effectiveness at this pH. Standard Gibbs free energy changes (ΔG) of flavonoid-DNA complexes were calculated as negative values and indicative of spontaneity of their binding. Both flavonoids showed significant DNA protection activity.

The biosorption Brilliant Red HE-3B reactive dye by nonliving biomass, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in batch procedure was investigated. Equilibrium experimental data were analyzed using Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin — Radushkevich isotherm models and obtained capacity about 104.167 mg g−1 at 20°C. The batch biosorption process followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. The multi-linearity of the Weber-Morris plot suggests the presence of two main steps influencing the biosorption process: the intraparticle diffusion (pore diffusion), and the external mass transfer (film diffusion). The results obtained in batch experiments revealed that the biosorption of reactive dye by biomass is an endothermic physical-chemical process occurring mainly by electrostatic interaction between the positive charged surface of the biomass and the anionic dye molecules. The biosorption mechanism was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy and microscopy analysis

Shape memory polyurethanes (SMPUs) were synthesized by 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), hexane-1,6-diol (HD), polypropylene glycol (PPG), and recycled polyvinyl butyral (PVB). Dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transformation infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy was used to characterize the poly (vinylbutyral-urethanes). Micro-phase domain separation of hard and soft segments and phase inversion were investigated. Increasing the hard segment content, i.e., average hard segment molecular weight, leads to an increase in the degree of micro-phase separation, hard domain order and crystallinity. The crystalline hard segment structures combined with the elastic nature of soft segment matrix provide enough physical and chemical crosslinks to have shape memory effect.

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry was used to study the complexes of ligands containing two bipyridine units, namely 3,5-bis(2,2-bipyridin-4-ylethynyl)benzoic acid (1) and its methyl and ethyl esters (2, 3), with copper cation, with CuCl2 as a source of copper. It was found that the type of complexes formed strongly depends on CuCl2 concentration. At lower CuCl2 concentration, the detected complexes were rather simple and some of them were formed upon electrospray ionization conditions e.g. ions [22+Cu2]2+ and [32+Cu2]2+ (complexes ligand-Cu(I) of stoichiometry 2:2) which are analogical to the well known, for quaterpyridine, helical complexes. At higher CuCl2 concentration, the detected complexes were more complicated, and most of them contained copper cations bridged by chlorides. The largest ions were [L2+Cu4Cl6]2+. The CID MS/MS spectra of these ions allowed determination of their mass spectrometric fragmentation pathways and as a consequence their structure elucidation.

A sensitive and specific high performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescent detection (HPLC-FL) and tandem mass spectrometry detection (HPLC-MS/MS) methods for separation and determination of carvedilol (CAR) enantiomers and 5′-hydroxyphenyl carvedilol (5′-HCAR) enantiomers has been developed and validated. The analysed compounds were extracted from human urine by solid phase extraction. Good enantioseparation of the studied enantiomers was achieved on CHIRALCEL® OD-RH column using 0.05% trifluoroacetic acid and 0.05% diethylamine in water and acetonitrile in a gradient elution. The mass spectrometric data were acquired using the multiple reaction monitoring mode by positive electrospray ionisation. The method was validated over the concentration range from 25.0 ng mL−1 to 200 ng mL−1 for the analysed compounds. The limit of quantification varied from 14.2 ng mL−1 to 24.2 ng mL−1. Both the repeatability and inter-day precisions were below 10.0%, and the accuracy varied from −13.2% to 3.77%. The extraction recoveries ranged from 79.2% to 108%. The present paper reports the method for the simultaneous determination of CAR enantiomers and their metabolite enantiomers (5′-HCAR) in human urine samples. This newly developed method was successfully used to analyse the aforementioned analytes in human urine samples obtained from patients suffering from cardiovascular disease.

Calcium zirconate powders doped with a small amount of CaO were synthesised using the Pechini method. X-ray analysis revealed that solid solution was formed in the concentration up to 51.5% mol CaO. For synthesis of stoichiometric CaZrO3, the highest temperature was required (1150°C), but introduction of excess CaO from 50.5 to 51.5% mol enabled us to lower the synthesis temperature to 800°C. The sintering behaviour of such samples under non-isothermal conditions was studied by dilatometric methods. Deviations were found in stoichiometry; by increasing the CaO concentration in CaZrO3 sinterability improved in comparison to CaZrO3 with stoichiometric composition. The presence of CaO as second phase caused deterioration of the sinterability of the CaZrO3-based samples. Pellets sintered at 1500°C for 2 h reached 96–98% of theoretical density. SEM and TEM observations were used to characterise the microstructure of the prepared samples. The electrical properties of CaZrO3-based samples were investigated by the AC-impedance spectroscopy method. It was found that introduction of excess CaO into the CaZrO3 structure caused an increase in ionic conductivity up to the solubility limit. The possibility of using CaZrO3-based samples for constructing prototype electrochemical oxygen probes to determine activity of oxygen dissolved in molten copper is also demonstrated.

Wood originating from a softwood species was subjected to chemical treatment by reaction with succinic anhydride in N, N-dimethylformamide at different concentration values. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis were used to study changes that occurred on a softwood surface. The extent of chemical treatment on softwood was evaluated by determining the weight percent gain values. Thermal properties of modified softwood and the water absorption were also evaluated. The chemical treatment with succinic anhydride influenced the thermal stability of the softwood samples with increasing anhydride concentration levels.

The instrumental qualitative analysis of urinary stones is a critical step in clinical practice and urological research. A powder X-ray diffraction, IR-spectroscopy and ion chromatography have been applied for the qualitative analysis of 20 urinary stones. Suggestions for a sample preparation and an optimal measurement strategy were formulated. The main difficulties for the powder X-ray diffraction qualitative analysis are a limiting amount of the sample and a preferential orientation of crystals, both issues should be minimized by the special sample preparation. Urinary stones samples have been clustered into four groups using different sets of numerical input data (cation and anion content, phase composition). At the same time a high-throughput multivariate clustering has been applied for powder X-ray diffraction and IR-spectroscopy data. The multivariate whole-profile approach can be used as a tool for a high-throughput time reducing technique for clinical practice, when a quick and stable classification of samples is required. All three sets of the data can be automatically separated into three clusters: oxalate-reach, oxalate-pure and non-oxalate samples. Uricite-pure and uricite-rich samples can be easily clustered.

Five positional isomers and thirty derivatives of alpha-asarone wereobtained as a bioactive set of substances, and their deterrent activity against the Colorado potato beetle was studied. The lipophilicity values of thirty-six compounds were determined by using experimental, chromatographic and theoretical methods. The logk w values for all compounds were determined by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography using five different columns. The octan-1-ol/water partition coefficients values were determined experimentally as a measure of lipophilicity. For the purpose of comparison, theoretical lipophilic parameters for all compounds were calculated with the use of chemical programs. The experimental, chromatographic and calculated values were compared using linear regression analysis. The most significant correlations were found between the chromatographic lipophilicities using methanol/water for all tested columns and calculated values. It has been found that 13 compounds have the lowest lipophilicities, which correspond to deterrent activity. The presented results show that the computational method is useful for determining the lipophilicity of a series of homologues, but not for positional isomers. In addition, this study shows that determination of lipophilicity using HPLC with various stationary phases is practical and reasonable for all alpha-asarone derivatives.

The purpose of the present study is the preparation and characterization of collagen/antitumor drug hybrids as drug delivery systems. Materials used for obtaining collagen-based drug delivery systems were collagen type I (Coll) as matrix and irinotecan (I) as hydrophilic active substances. After incorporation of I into Coll in differing ratios, the obtained hybrid materials (Coll/I) could be used according to our results as potential drug delivery systems in medicine for the topical (local) treatment of cancerous tissues or bone. The released amount of I varies with amount of Coll from hybrid materials: the higher, the slower the release amount of irinotecan transferred is in the first 6 hours. The in vitro citotoxicity demonstrates an antitumoral activity of the obtained hybrid materials and their potential use for biomedical applications as drug delivery systems in tumoral treatments.

The rearrangement of easily accessible Cookson’s diketone with chlorosulfonic acid in chloroform followed by the acidic hydrolysis gave 6-chloro-7-hydroxy-dichloropentacyclo[6.3.0.02,6.03,10.05,9]undecane-4-one, whose syn-stereochemistry was assigned through the X-ray crystal structure analysis. This key structure was used for the stereoselective synthesis of the D 3-trishomocubane derivatives as well as for the preparation of potential drugs bearing hydroxy- and amino-functional groups. A new multigram preparative synthesis of D 3-trishomocubane was developed.
