Plankton parasites such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and unicellular eukaryotes are associated symbionts colonizing algal groups in aquatic ecosystems. They occur within a network of microbe–microbe interactions in which they parasitize phytoplankton and seaweeds, i.e., primary producers generating organic carbon and forming the basis of marine food webs. These parasites use algae as a source of nutrients and reproduce at the expense of their host, causing infectious symptoms leading to disease and death. Plankton parasites can reduce the algal populations, and the infection of one specific species may, in turn, favor the development of another, influencing the seasonal succession of algal blooms in oceans, seas, and lakes. Many parasites have free-living stages that zooplankton graze upon, representing a significant trophic link in food webs. The biology and life cycle of plankton parasites are well investigated in marine and freshwater algal hosts. Still, the chemical signaling mediating these microbial interactions and the effect of co-occurring symbionts remain underexplored. This review focuses on the diversity of plankton parasites infecting algae, with a particular emphasis on unicellular eukaryotes. The ecological role of plankton parasites, the mechanisms regulating cellular infection and host resistance, and the interplay of alga-parasite interactions with coexisting microorganisms are discussed.

Wild-type sporophytes of Saccharina japonica have been recurrently observed on the infrastructures of kelp farming rafts in China’s northern production region (Liaoning and Shandong provinces). However, there are few detailed reports delineating their origin, genetic attributes and affiliations with farmed populations. Using microsatellite molecular analyses, we furnish a comparative analysis of the populations sampled from these rafts at one of the historical kelp farming regions Rongcheng city (Shandong province), both before and after the “2021–2022 kelp farming disaster”, in conjunction with two field populations from nearby intertidal zones where natural populations prevail. The results show that the wild kelp populations on the kelp farming rafts in 2023 had originated from the wild populations dwelling in intertidal zones several kilometers away, rather than from the artificially cultivated kelp cultivars.

Brown algal forests provide many ecosystem services but are declining worldwide, prompting a growing number of conservation and restoration efforts. Recent attempts to recover Cystoseira forests are encouraging in the Mediterranean, but whether this is possible in more challenging Atlantic conditions has not yet been investigated. In this study, we assess the feasibility of cultivating Gongolaria nodicaulis by producing ex-situ recruits for reforestation on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Embryos of G. nodicaulis were cultured on clay tiles for 26 days under controlled conditions without water motion, reaching an average length of 3 mm before being outplanted on the intertidal zone. The transplants were monitored for six months. Recruits experienced high loss rates, approximately 47 % of zygotes within 7 days in culture and 75 % of outplanted seedlings within 10 days in the field. The latter might result from natural self-thinning (competition), but our observations suggested that it was also largely due to the weak attachment of recruits to the tiles resulting from cultivation under calm conditions. Six months after the transplants, the surviving individuals reached the size of wild adult algae (average length of 13.5 cm), and some even became reproductive. Globally, survival rates, growth, physiological condition and fertility in this restoration pilot suggest that ex-situ recruitment and outplanting of G. nodicaulis is a promising approach to recover forests in Atlantic Morocco.

Phymatolithon acervatum is an encrusting, non-geniculate coralline alga from South Africa. While morpho-anatomical details of the species are well documented, no genetic analyses have been performed on P. acervatum . Here, we analyzed rbc L and psb A gene sequences, and they showed that two species were passing under the name Phymatolithon acervatum in South Africa. A partial rbc L sequence from the lectotype of Lithothamnion acervatum , basionym of P. acervatum , showed to which species the specific epithet applies, and furthermore that both species belong in Phymatolithopsis. We transfer Phymatolithon acervatum to Phymatolithopsis , as Phymatolithopsis acervata comb. nov., and propose Phymatolithopsis roseola sp. nov. These species overlap in morpho-anatomy, habitat and distribution and can only be distinguished based on DNA sequences. Previous misinterpretations of conceptacle development are corrected for species of Phymatolithopsis. The main character used to define the family Mesophyllumaceae is shown to have arisen several times in independent lineages in the order Hapalidiales. At present, only one family, Hapalidiaceae, thus merits recognition in the Hapalidiales.

The algae of the genus Gelidium can be found as frequent and abundant inhabitants in the rocky intertidal zone of the Mexican Atlantic. Six species of this genus have been reported in this region, but only Gelidium americanum has been confirmed with morphological and molecular tools, despite how important both tools have proven to be for the group. This research aimed to evaluate the Mexican specimens previously identified as Gelidium through morphological and molecular approaches, using rbc L and COI-5P markers. This study examined 20 specimens found living attached to the shell of a gastropod Stramonita rustica in the mid-high intertidal zone of the Mexican Atlantic and ten specimens found living on rocks. Phylogenetic analyses resolved these specimens to be an independent species closely related to G. gonzalezii , G. yangmeikengense , and G. indonesianum . Genetic distances and morphological information confirmed this. Gelidium rodrigueziae sp. nov. is described as a new species. It is distinguished from its related species by having a simpler branching pattern, a smaller number and size of medullary cells, and the smaller quantity and distribution of restricted internal rhizoid filaments around the medulla.

Molecular data related to morphology from the multicellular vesiculated genus Dictyosphaeria are scarce. We provide the first molecular data on Dictyosphaeria species from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, sampled from the Brazilian northeastern coast, and two oceanic islands (Trindade, southeastern Brazil, and Fernando de Noronha, northeastern Brazil). The samples from Brazil were morphologically identified as Dictyosphaeria versluysii and D. ocellata . Our newly generated sequences of D. versluysii formed a monophyletic clade, while their relationship with D. versluysii from the Indo-Pacific Ocean, where the type locality of the species is located, was unresolved. Additionally, the newly generated sequences of D. ocellata confirm its status as a distinct species but reinforce the difficulties in morphologically separating this species. These results might be indicative of cryptic diversity in D. versluysii and highlight the need for molecular data from other geographic locations to understand the diversity and distribution of Dictyosphaeria species.

Benthic dinoflagellates have been the subject of extensive taxonomic research in recent decades. Studies of morphologies of already known species of benthic dinoflagellates from various geographical populations remain relevant, as these allow elucidation of some details that were overlooked in the original species descriptions or assessment of their morphological variability. In the present study, two rare species of dinoflagellates, Amphidiniella sedentaria and Pachena cf. leibnizii , have been studied, for the first time, from coastal sands of the northwestern Sea of Japan. In the cells of A. sedentaria from the Sea of Japan, we have found two anterior intercalar plates instead of one. Therefore, the original formula has been changed to APC 4′ 2a 7″ 5c 4s 6‴ 2⁗. As a result of the examination of P . cf. leibnizii from the Sea of Japan, we have counted seven precingular plates and six cingular plates, instead of six and five, respectively, indicated in the original description. The plate formula of the cells of P . cf. leibnizii from the Sea of Japan is APC 4′ 3a 7″ 6c 5s 5‴ 2⁗. It is currently difficult to judge whether these differences are morphological variations. Therefore, we have identified these cells as P. cf. leibnizii.
