Botanica Marina publishes high-quality contributions from all of the disciplines of marine botany at all levels of biological organisation from subcellular to ecosystem: chemistry and applications, genomics, physiology and ecology, phylogeny and biogeography. Research involving global or interdisciplinary interest is especially welcome. Applied science papers are appreciated, particularly when they illustrate the application of emerging conceptual issues or promote developing technologies. The journal invites state-of-the art reviews dealing with recent developments in marine botany.

The Subantarctic brown alga Cladochroa chnoosporiformis had been collected only on one occasion by Carl Skottsberg in 1907 from Port Philomel, West Falkland, Falkland Islands, resulting in its formal taxonomic description. Due to the lack of reports since then, doubts remained about its existence and identity. Within the framework of this study, Cladochroa was rediscovered 106 years after its original description at its type locality, confirming its existence and the morphological features described by Skottsberg. The re-collection enabled molecular studies on field material and isolated cultures. Sequences of nrDNA, rbc L, and 5′-COI suggest that C. chnoosporiformis is conspecific with Utriculidium durvillei , which has nomenclatural priority. However, the morphologies of C. chnoosporiformis and U. durvillei are significantly different. Utriculidium may be the gametophyte generation of Cladochroa , or hitherto unknown factors cause highly different morphologies without alternating generations.

The minute marine multicellular heterokont alga originally described as “ Giraudyopsis stellifer ” by P.J.L. Dangeard, nom. inval. , from Atlantic France, was re-isolated by the germling emergence technique and classified according to psa A and psb C sequences. It is genetically similar (99–100 % identity) to Phaeosaccion multiseriatum R.A. Andersen, L. Graf et H.S. Yoon recently described from the NE Pacific, an ephemeral alga of wide geographical distribution. We isolated it also from substratum samples collected in Korea and the Falkland Islands, where it had not been reported previously. Two isolates of similar morphology from the coast of Chile had the same nuclear ribosomal SSU sequence but differed from P. multiseriatum and P. okellyi R.A. Andersen, L. Graf et H.S. Yoon from New Zealand in psa A and psb C sequences (3–4 % genetic distance). These two isolates are here described as Phaeosaccion westermeieri sp. nov.. Our isolations of P . multiseriatum and P. westermeieri are a further demonstration that the germling emergence technique can reveal microscopic multicellular benthic algae that are easily overlooked in the field.

Onslowiales are minute sublittoral marine brown algae found in warm-temperate to tropical regions of the North Atlantic Ocean. Sequences of the plastid-encoded markers psa A, psb C, rbc L and the Rubisco spacer of a strain of Verosphacela from Greece, previously identified as Verosphacela silvae , were highly similar to sequences of Verosphacela ebrachia from Florida, extending the distribution of the species to the Mediterranean and suggesting re-examination of the morphologically similar V. silvae described from Italy. Two other species were grown from substratum collected in the subtidal of Rapa Nui (Easter Island, subtropical Southeast Pacific) and Ascension Island (tropical Atlantic). According to sequences of the aforementioned markers, they also belong to the Onslowiales, forming a clade with V. ebrachia . They are described here as Verosphacela henryi sp. nov. and Verosphacela asensii sp. nov., respectively. In culture, they consisted of creeping branched filaments growing by means of an apical cell, and subterminal filament cells dividing once longitudinally. V. henryi formed four- to five-celled propagules without apical cells, resembling those of V. ebrachia , whereas V. asensii remained vegetative. V. asensii extends the distribution of the Onslowiales to the central tropical Atlantic, and V. henryi is the first record of the order in the Pacific Ocean.
