ABSTRACT The contribution is connected to earlier research by the author (Reichsbund und Interim. Die Verfassungs- und Religionspolitik Karls V. und der Reichstag von Augsburg 1547/48, Köln, Wien 1971) and takes it farther by means of the critical incorporation of editions and discussions that have appeared more recently. The focus of the study is upon the history of the rise of the Interim within the framework of the religious politics of Charles V during 1547-48, which because of the extraordinarily difficult state of the sources has only been partially clarified. More far-reaching historical aspects of theology, by contrast, are only summarily treated. The most important results of the essay are as follows: 1. The Interim that Charles V carried through the Diet of Augsburg was an attempt at a temporary settlement between the religious parties in Germany expiring definitely after the Council of Trent would have solved all controversial items. The unity of the church within the Empire was thereby to be preserved or achieved again, and at the same time the outward peace in Germany assured. Charles V wished to see guaranteed the essentials of the Roman Church - whatever might pertain to them. Nevertheless, the Interim made substantial concessions to the Protestants, in teaching just as in ceremonies and ecclesiastical order (the marriage of priests, lay reception of the chalice). Thus, the Interim stood in close continuity with the religious politics of Charles V after 1530. In contrast, the specifically new aspects of the imperial politics of religion consisted above all of the close unity between this attempted settlement between the religious parties and the effort at intra-ecclesiastical reform. This tie informed the first draft of the Interim late in 1547 and showed itself finally in the proximity of the Interim and the Formula reformationis of June 1548. To this may be added the high personal engagement that the Emperor was able to bring to bear as a result of his enormously increased political authority after the Schmalkaldic War. Yet Charles V tried very effectively to restrict as much as possible outward awareness, especially in the publicity surrounding the Imperial Diet, of the dominant influence that he exerted on the shaping of the Interim. That seems initially surprising but had its good reasons: above all, the Emperor strove to counter the reproach that he attempted to be an authoritarian universal monarch, at the expense of the imperial estates - and also at the expense of Pope and council. 2. The Interim politics of Charles V. was severely contested from the beginning, and not only among the religious parties at the Imperial Diet, but also at court among the closest advisors of the Emperor. Above all, Pedro de Soto, the confessor of Charles V, pleaded for an unyielding Counter-Reformation course for the imperial politics of religion, while Nicolas Perrenot de Granvelle, the foremost advisor of the Emperor, represented an ecclesiastically mediating and at the same time more pragmatic position. The controversy was fundamental; it remained virulent throughout the imperial Diet, and left personal bitterness in its wake. Charles V finally made an end to the strife in August 1548, when he dismissed his confessor. The decisions in religious politics made by the Emperor continued to arise out of these conflicts. This could well explain the fundamental decision that the Emperor took in rejecting the uncompromising anti-Reformation draft of his first Interim commission in December 1547 and the appointment of a new commission under the leadership of the Bishop of Naumburg, Julius Pflug, who was inclined toward a conciliatory theological position. The Interim policy of Charles V was far more filled with tension than it appears in most historical presentations. 3. Conditioned by the strongly political - not only ecclesiastical - tensions between Charles V and Pope Paul III, in 1547-48 the Emperor completely excluded the Pope and his representative at the imperial court from all negotiations over the Imterim, and in general over religion, at the imperial Diet of Augsburg. Even the originally anticipated confirmation of the Interim by the Pope seemed from early in 1548 to be dispensable. Nonetheless Charles V made a vigorous effort to bind the Pope to his Interim policies. Above all the demand of the Emperor that the Pope send legates or nuncios to Germany who could be helpful in the inner reform of the church - who were empowered to grant dispensations for the marriage of priests, for giving the chalice to the laity, and for moderating the privations of Lent - was virtually a papal legitimation of the concessions to the Protestants made by the Interim, and simultaneously a recognition of the membership of the Protestants, under the terms of the Interim, to the Roman Church. As a matter of fact, Paul III initially acquiesced to the imperial demand but postponed complying until long after the adjournment of the Diet at the end of June 1548; in September of the same year, he finally gave the faculties of dispensation such restrictive wording that this must have appeared completely unacceptable to the Protestants. Thus, from an early date an important part of Charles V’s Interim politics became, and remained, unattainable.

ABSTRACT The essay reminds us of the effects of Paul Speratus, that early follower of Luther who died 450 years ago and who, probably unjustly, has enjoyed little attention in recent decades. At the beginning of 1522, the former Würzburg cathedral preacher was excommunicated by the theology faculty of the University of Vienna, because of a sermon that he had preached in St. Stephan’s Cathedral in Vienna - one of the first that argued against clerical vows of celibacy. From that time, Speratus aligned himself with the faction of reform-minded critics of scholasticism. Nevertheless, he found a new position as pastor in Iglau (Moravia), from which, however, King Ludwig of Hungary attempted to drive him. The congregation initially banded together in defense of their pastor, but under the pressure of the cross it did not persevere. Speratus had to yield and turned toward Wittenberg. There he gained attention as the translator of three writings of Luther, among others the Formula Missae|. In addition, he wrote the lyrics of the great Reformation hymn, Es ist das Heil uns kommen her|. A later song about the Augsburg Diet of 1530 expressed the problem of resistance. After 1524, Speratus took his final post, as court preacher in the young Duchy of Prussia and evangelical Bishop of Pomerania. His contribution to the history of the Prussian Reformation is deserving of a new evaluation.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Untersucht wird eine Kontroverse um das Fasten, die in England im Herbst 1562 ausgetragen wurde und die den Klerikern der englischen Staatskirche deutlich werden ließ, wie stark das elisabethanische „church settlement“ Elemente katholischer Frömmigkeit aufrechterhielt. Daher bemühten sich die calvinistisch Denkenden unter den Kleriker der Church of England in der Kontroverse mit John Sanderson einerseits, die Wichtigkeit des Fastens hervorzuheben, andererseits, sich von der katholischen Praxis mit ihren Vorschriften und Verboten zu distanzieren.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Der Aufsatz untersucht die Spannungen, die sich aus der calvinistischen Kirchenzucht und deren Rituale der Wiedergutmachung und Versöhnung in der schottischen Kirche Rotterdam ergaben. Der Autor zeigt, daß die nach Rotterdam eingewanderten Schotten stark durch ihre Migration über Seewege geprägt waren. Daher fühlten sie sich weder der schottischen Gesellschaftsordnung noch der calvinistischen Kirche so verbunden, daß sie die Kirchenzucht ohne Widerstände akzeptierten. Die Gründung der schottischen calvinistischen Kirche in Rotterdam 1643 erfolgte also im Umfeld nicht-calvinistischer Migranten. Die Prädikanten und ältesten waren daher darauf angewiesen, unter den Migranten einen Konsens über die Ziele und Aufgaben der Kirche, insbesondere der Kirchenzucht, herzustellen. Dies erwies sich jedoch als unmöglich: Während es den Migranten bei der Kirchenzucht und der Beilegung von Konflikten vornehmlich um die Sicherung ihrer persönlichen Ehre ging, stellte das Konsistorium die auf göttlichem Frieden beruhende Einheit der Gemeinde in den Vordergrund. Langfristig traten an die Stelle der öffentlichen Rituale der Wiedergutmachung und Versöhnung vor der Gemeinde Rituale des Gewissens, die auf das Individuum abzielten und damit zugleich die Unverletzbarkeit der persönlichen Ehre gewährleisteten.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die Unbeschuhten Karmeliter wiesen in ihrer Gründungsgeschichte dem persönlichen Verhältnis zwischen Theresa von Avila und Philipp II. eine wichtige Rolle zu. Über das Verhältnis von Philipp und Theresa liegen uns heute nur noch vier Briefe vor, die wiederholt als Ausdruck einer persönlichen Beziehung oder zumindest einer persönlichen Korrespondenz angesehen wurden. Demgegenüber kommt der Beitrag zu dem Ergebnis, daß die vorhandenen Quellen diese Auffassung nicht stützen. Philipp II. war nicht der einzige und möglicherweise noch nicht einmal der Hauptadressat der Briefe. Dennoch waren die Briefe einflußreich, weil sie die Unbeschuhten Karmeliter ermutigten, Rivalen einschüchterten und Hofbeamte und Adelige für die Sache einnahmen. Es muß davon ausgegangen werden, daß Theresa von Avila nur über adelige Freunde am Hof Einfluß auf den König nehmen konnte und daß keine persönliche Beziehung zwischen Philipp und Theresa bestand.

ABSTRACT The question of Catholicity unites the three problems dealt with in this essay. Johannes Honterus’s concept of Reformation can be understood above all against the background of the Roman Catholic way of speaking about renewal and efforts at integration. The question of the dating of the Upper Hungarian “Confessio Pentapolitana” is posed anew; its alleged author, Leonhard Stöckel, could not possibly have written the confession of the Five-City Federation that was submitted in 1549. The emergence of this confessional text is illuminated on the basis of the meetings of the Hungarian Diet. It is possible that the “Confessio Pentapolitana,” which Hungarian authorities did not recognize or consent to during the period under study, was at most tolerated for tactical reasons.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Die Forschung war bis vor kurzem der Auffassung, die Konfessionalisierungsthese sei auf Frankreich nicht anwendbar. Die Untersuchungen zur franzö sischen Religionsgeschichte, die in den letzten zehn Jahren vorgelegt wurden, zwingen jedoch zu einer Überprüfung dieser Einschä tzung. Das gibt Anlaß zu dem Vorschlag, das Konfessionalisierungskonzept für Frankreich auf der Grundlage der Thesen John Bossys zu operationalisieren: Wä hrend die Konfessionalisierungsthese sich auf Mitteleuropa zwischen 1560 und 1650 konzentriert, muß der Zeitrahmen für die Untersuchung des franzö sischen Falls auf die Jahre 1530-1685 ausgedehnt werden. Diese Phase ist - trotz einer weitgehend konstanten Katholisierungspolitik des Staates - geprägt von der (Ko-)Existenz zweier Konfessionen. Diese im Edikt von Nantes festgeschriebene Bikonfessionalität beruhte auf praktischen und politischen Notwendigkeiten. Unter dem Blickwinkel des Konfessionalisierungskonzepts stellt sich die Frage, wie es der hugenottischen Bewegung im 16.Jahrhundert gelang, gegen den Widerstand der Krone und der katholischen Kirche eine institutionalisierte Konfessionskirche mit entsprechendem Selbstverstä ndnis auszubilden - eine Frage, die sich auch für die dévots des 17.Jahrhunderts stellt.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Dieser Aufsatz beschä ftigt sich mit dem Ursprung und der Entwicklung der Debatte über Sozialdisziplinierung, Konfessionalisierung und Modernisierung in der italienischen Historiographie seit den frühen 1980er Jahren. Anstoß dieser Diskussionen war der Vorschlag, frühneuzeitliche italienische Geschichte nicht mehr in den Kategorien von Gegenreformation und katholischer Reform zu untersuchen, sondern unter dem Blickwinkel eines Modernisierungsprozesses, der aus einer komplexen Interaktion zwischen Institutionen des Staates und der Kirche einerseits und der Gesellschaft andererseits hervorgegangen sei. Der hier gebotene historiographische überblick macht deutlich, daß dadurch insbesondere die Disziplinierungsbestrebungen der nachtridentinischen Kirche ins Zentrum der Forschung gerückt sind. Die zu Beginn der Debatte geforderte Untersuchung von Interaktionsprozessen sowie die Frage nach den langfristigen Folgen der italienischen Konfessionalisierung sind dagegen noch nicht ausreichend bearbeitet.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Dieser Beitrag beschä ftigt sich mit den Anwendungsmö glichkeiten des Konfessionalisierungsparadigmas auf die katholische Reform in Spanien, wobei er sich an den von Wolfgang Reinhard vorgeschlagenen sieben Methoden der Konfessionalisierung orientiert. Auf dieser Grundlage sieht die Autorin ein hohes Erklä rungspotential des Konfessionalisierungskonzepts für die Geschichte der katholischen Kirche in Spanien.
