11 Atopia

Dennis Kelly, modernity, and community
  • David Pattie

Abstract

This chapter examines characteristic modes of social organisation in the work of Dennis Kelly. It argues that Kelly’s work presents contemporary society as an atopia – a structure marked by flux, uncertainty, and fragility, in which all apparently stable relations exist at the point of fragmentation. The chapter examines three of Kelly’s plays: Orphans (2009), DNA (2008), and Taking Care of Baby (2007). In each, it traces the impact of atopian structures on the family, the community, and on the structure of the text itself.
