6 Transfer of military power in Mauritania
-
Camille Evrard
Abstract
This chapter focuses on the transfer of military power in Mauritania. It also focuses on a larger study, at the crossroads of political and institutional history on the one hand and military history on the other. The chapter discusses the conceptual bridges between a vision of State and 'system' on the one hand, and individuals, former military officers operating in the Sahara on the other. It describes three periods of the broader chronology: Operation Ecouvillon, the defence agreements, and Operation Lamantin. This examination of the Mauritanian example allows to explore the direct consequences of the process of decolonisation in the field. The chapter analyses the key events such as Operation Ecouvillon, which have to be interpreted in their relationship to independence and to the impact of Moroccan-Mauritanian affairs on the creation of the identity of the emerging state of Mauritania.
