Abstract

Barbara Castle had an oratorical style quite foreign to the 'new oratory'; she was, rather, paradigmatic of the 'old politician' identified by Simon Hoggart. This chapter describes Castle was a politician who believed firmly in arguing her case even in the face of fierce opposition, revelling in the fight and unafraid to state 'hard truths' to her audience, whoever they might be. Drawing upon the classic concepts of ethos, pathos and logos and studying examples from the three arenas of Parliament, conference and communication with the electorate, this analysis paints a particular picture of Castle. It argues that to understand her oratory it is important to also grasp her personal belief, as the title of her autobiography put it, in 'fighting all the way'. The 1959 speech was perhaps the most powerful single oration of Castle's career.
