Abstract

This chapter outlines the most recent changes in social services and places them in the context of a series of longer-term policy shifts that began in the 1970s. It is more concerned with the developments in social care since 1989. The chapter aims to provide a balanced and personal view of the role of the personal social services in supporting families and individuals within a changing society where inequalities continue.
