Abstract

This chapter discusses developments in education. It is argued that the second term of New Labour has been characterised by a gradual approach to educational reform. The discussion focuses more on the issues of selection and diversity within the current reforms. It describes the growing role of the private sector in education, and then provides a critical assessment of the concept of meritocracy and its importance to education.
