Co-site Microscopy: Case Studies

Abstract

A new methodology, co-site microscopy, is presented and discussed through a set of case studies. Images from the same field, or set of fields, of a sample are acquired with different microscopy techniques, or from the same microscope in diverse contrast modes and/or sample conditions. The obtained data is assembled in a multi-modal database that provides better statistical accuracy than traditional quantitative metallography approaches, while tracking local changes in the sample. Case studies on automotive catalysts, a copper ore, and a cast iron are presented and discussed.

Kurzfassung

Im Beitrag wird ein neues Verfahren, das Co-site-Mikroskopie, dargestellt und anhand von Fallstudien diskutiert. Dabei werden Bilder vom gleichen Feldes bzw. einer Serie dieser Felder einer Stichprobe mit Hilfe unterschiedlicher mikroskopischer Verfahren bzw. mit dem gleichen Mikroskop in verschiedenen Kontrastmodi oder/und Stichprobenbedingungen erhoben. Die erhaltenen Daten werden in einer multi-modalen Datenbank zusammengestellt, wodurch durch Verfolgung lokaler Änderungen in der Stichprobe eine höhere statistische Genauigkeit als bei herkömmlichen quantitativen metallographischen Ansätzen erzielt wird. Fallstudien zu Pkw-Katalysatoren, einem Kupfererz und Gusseisen werden diskutiert.
