Abstract
In this study, the contribution the coupling-factor and the service life reliability of piezoelectric patches attached to spring steel with epoxy resin was investigated regarding influences of surface roughness and the thickness of the adhesive layer on the basis of the theory of oscillation. Several specimens with varied thicknesses of the adhesive layer were prepared with the help of specific process apparatus and bonded subsequently. Analytical calculations were executed in order to assess the influence of the adhesive layer thickness and the surface roughness on the electromechanical coupling factor as well as the service life reliability. The influence of the adhesive layer thickness on the coupling factor was compared to that of the manufacturing tolerances and the material scatter. The fatigue behavior determined by the adhesive layer thickness was evaluated and assessed based on long-term experiments. The results show no significant influence of the adhesive layer thickness on the coupling factor und the service life reliability for bonding applications of piezoelectric patches with epoxy resin.
