Abstract

Infrared and Raman spectroscopy were used to establish the presence and interactions of guest molecules enclosed in the SiO2-clathrasil compound Dodecasil 3C. X-ray powder diagrams showed an expansion of the crystal lattice that varied with the size of the guest molecule. Reactions of the guest molecules on heating the clathrate were demonstrated by means of vibrational spectroscopy. Larger quantities of substances were synthesized in autoclaves. The occupation of the silica framework with guest molecules was quantitatively determined in one substance.
