Abstract

The description of a crystal structure is a three dimensional problem, but in most cases it can be formally decomposed into a two-plus-one dimensional problem (2D + 1D), that is, into the constitution of layers and the way they stack together. Five rules are presented governing the constitution of the layers and their stacking in inorganic crystal structures, which are the generalization of the rules already recognized in simple structures.
