Elastic, thermoelastic, piezoelectric, linear electrooptic, dielectric, and pyroelectric properties of trigonal Ca3(VO4)2 single crystals

Abstract
Single crystals of Ca3(VO4)2 with diameters up to 25 mm and lengths of 60 mm have been grown by the Czochralski technique from a stoichiometric melt. Elastic, thermoelastic, piezoelectric, linear electrooptic, dielectric and pyroelectric properties have been measured. Ca3(VO4)2 exhibits much smaller elastic resistances than CaO. The difference is qualitatively explained by a simple model of bond strength and number of bonds per unit volume. Piezoelectric and electrooptical coefficients possess values similar to those of quartz. A pyroelectric effect is observed about 1.5 times larger than that of tourmaline.
