Crystal structure of l(+)-cysteine hydrochloride monohydrate*

Abstract
l(+)-cysteine hydrochloride monohydrate crystallizes in the space group P212121, with a = 19.48 Å, b = 7.12 Å, c = 5.52 Å. The structure was determined in projections and refined with three-dimensional data to R = 0.124 for observed reflections. Interesting features of the structure are, (a) a possible S–H···Cl bond, the sulfur atom acting as a donor and, (b) the carboxyl-oxygen atom O(2) not taking part in hydrogen bonding. The molecule assumes a nonzwitterion form. Its conformation, relative to other similar sulfur-containing amino acids, is discussed.
